In Feb. I stopped at Cenex Consumers Co-op gas station to fill up. I used my debit card, put the pump in my car, selected the gas grade and as I watched, when the pump registered 0.00 gals., the price registered 4 cents before a drop of gas was pumped. I figured a glitch happened and 4 cents is no big deal, I filled the tank and went inside to tell the cashiers for an FYI that their pump registered that 4 cents was added before I started to pump...they said sorry.

A few weeks ago I stopped at the same station and again, on a different pump, $00.02 was displayed on the price window before I started to pump. I went into the station and asked for the manager. He walked out to the pump with me, and I told him I had also had this same experience on a different pump at his station a few weeks ago. He said it must be a glitch, but when I said again that it happened on two different pumps he had no answer.

He seemed a little nervous and, on both instances, not offering to rectify the overcharge is to me a lousy customer relationship. I thought about reporting this to Cenex but I figured they'd sweep it under the rug. I also doubt that I am the only one to have had this happen at this station.

Reason why this happens

AUTHOR: kraig - Red Wing (USA)

The reason why this phenomenon happens is not because of any glitch in the equipment, it is because of the cold weather.  Seeing as you had this problem in February in Wisconsin when it is butt cold outside this would be caused by the gas contracting in the hose because of the cold weather.  When you turn on the pump it builds pressure in the system and "charges" the hose.  If the gas in the hose has contracted because of the cold (maybe it has been sitting there unused for a while) this phenomenon will happen.  The underground storage tanks (UST) are relatively stable temps year round (approx 60F) and if the outside temps are cold when the gas comes up to the hose and sits in the cold hose it will cause the volume to shrink.  Liquids will have less volume at low temps than hotter temps.  I'm surprised the station manager had not known this, it is quite common, they should give you a credit for the few cents if you request it.  I usually don't even bother, consequently, when the fuel warms in your tank it will expand too.  Hope this helps.
