AirRite is the local contractor with respect to air conditioning, heating, and ductwork repair for American Home Shield in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. On April 29, one of their servicemen came to diagnose some ductwork problems I was having at my residence. The first comment that the serviceman made when he came down from the attic was that my ductwork repairs did not come from "normal wear and tear" -- in other words, the "magic words" that let the home warranty company off the hook.

When I had a second contractor out, he noticed an additional hole in another duct, and noted that the other 5 ducts all were showing signs of wear and tear. Clearly, AirRite's only purpose is to minimize the costs for American Home Shield, so that they can keep making their service calls.

Our company has been contacted by AHS to do their work and we have flat out refused because of their practices and how they screw over the unsuspecting homeowner.

AUTHOR: Richard - Columbia (U.S.A.)

Thanks to AHS, we continue to get more customers. I happen to be a professionally trained, licensed, HVAC technician with a very reputable company. Many times I have been sent to a service call for no cooling or no heating problems. Only to have the customer tell me that AHS will not correct the problem because of pre-existing conditions.

Case in point. I did an inspection letter for a home owner trying to sell their house. The system was old and not very efficient. But the furnace was functioning safely and posed no problems. I wrote down everything that I did and also stated that the system was old and could not and would not guarentee how long the system would continue to funciton. The Realitor advised the homeowner to buy a home warrenty policy with AHS to calm any fears the new homeowners might have about buying the house with a old system. So they did.

2 months later we get a call that the heating went out. The problem turned out to be a bad thermocouple and that was a easy fix. The homeowner told me that AHS came out and would not fix the problem saying that the gas line did not have a drip leg in it therefore it was not within code and because of this it was not covered under their policy.

This furnace was put in before the drip leg was required by code and there for not required. It was in the middle of winter and they had 2 small children. So I replaced the thermocouple and only charged them for a service call and not the part.

Needless to say the homeowner was @$#%-off with AHS and called and cancelled his policy with AHS while I was there. We also got a customer because of AHS actions.

Our company has been contacted by AHS to do their work and we have flat out refused because of their practices and how they screw over the unsuspecting homeowner. If you have money to throw away to AHS, then go ahead because you will not get what you pay for.
