I bought a water heater from Lowes, needed a 75 gal which they didn't have. I replaced it with a 50 gal instead. Lowes charged 460.00 for the install which included removal of the old heater. They said they could do it that day. The installer called and said he would be there at 1:00 P.M. At 4:30 he showed up and said he would charge another 380.00 for the removal of the old heater and rerouting of old lines. The time now is 5:00PM and I could not be without hot water for another day. Total cost of installation now is 840.00. I had no choice but to continue the install. The installation was complete 6:15 PM. The water heater located in the Garage was very easy to remove and load onto a pickup 10 feet away.

Lowe's charges 460.00 for the install which should include hooking up the pipes again to the new heater. No rerouting of old pipes just a plain simple hookup.
I contacted another plummer and had him look at it and he said the total job should have been 350-400 for the total job.

This is a total ripoff from Lowe's.

Last month I spent 10,000 dollars on appliances which I did not have them install. I contacted an independent which he also installed for Lowe's and home Depot. He did the complete install for one half of the install Lowe's charges.

Customer relations was very rude and did not care if I went elsewere for further business.

I will never step foot in another Lowe's for any business. Home depot will be my store from now on.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

Get your documentation and hold Lowe's feet to the fire.

AUTHOR: Tim - Lind (U.S.A.)

First with a few points.

1. Lowe's priced the job site-unseen. Of course, this will protect Lowe's not you. True with any job priced site-unseen. When you contract with anyone 'site unseen', either they are successful and balance 'good(profitable) jobs', like yours, with 'bad(unprofitable) jobs', or they are headed out of the business.

2. Same day service is more expensive.

3. **The plumber that charged extra for the removal that Lowe's promised ripped you off, trusting that your posting is correct. **

4. The contacted plumber that estimated at $350 to $400 gave you a quote for work that he did not have to do, and without Lowe's assuming responsibility for the risk.

What you should do. Hold Lowe's responsible!!!

1. Confirm that your documentation from Lowe's includes removal. If it does, show a copy of the document to the installer, and suggest that he promptly refund the money so that you don't have to go to Lowe's to get your money. ** Do show A COPY, because if he gets the original in his hand and refuses to return it - or even takes it from your hand, you have no proof.

1.a If he does pay you, thank him and advise the store managment that there was a problem, but that the installer remedied the situation when notified . (if it was truly a mistake, the fact that he remedied the problem makes him look good. If it is a repeat offense, Lowe's can take action.)

1.b If he does not promptly pay you, politely tell him that you will promptly contact Lowe's, as high as you need to go.

1.c If Lowe's does not respond when presented with the proof, politely ask the store manager if he can handle a claim like this with you, or if he would prefer your use of small claims court or an attorney. BTW - If you have an attorney that will advise you, ask if the installer was agent for Lowe's or not (this may differ for your locality). If he is agent for Lowe's (your contract was with Lowe's) then Lowe's can be stuck with the bill, perhaps with reasonable recovery costs, or more. I hope you paid with a check.

1.d Choose one - small claims or an attorney.

2. If your documentation does not specify removal, then your situation is not favorable. You could still appeal to the manager with the 'small claims' or attorney, but your case would not stand up in small claims court without some documentation that the removal was to be included.

Best wishes to you.
