Working in my wood shop I put a bad cut in my thumb. It was a weekend and I didn't know where I could get it sewn up, everything was closed, so reluctantly I went to the E.R. at Thorek.
After a ridiculous wait just to be triaged, I was finally given a fresh sterile pad to hold over the very deep cut and told to wait in the waiting area. I spent a few minutes in the waiting area, there were only a few other people waiting there. Then a woman comes and updates her sister seated near me, "They are just treating him now," I hear her say.
"Pardon me, I ask, but how long have you been here?"
"Over three hours," she tells me, and goes on to explain that her father was experiencing an inability to breathe, a severe shortness of breath.
OK, that's enough for me I decide with an eye on the clock. I want to get to the local pharmacy before it closes. I go buy iodine and antibiotic ointment. I went home and cleaned the wound out and sewed it up myself with a needle and thread.
Thorek is trying to collect $141.25, for telling me to go wait in the waiting room. Unbelievable, no description of any services provided, just "Balance Forward."

If all is well for you and your thumb, then you made a good decision.
An individual "experiencing an inability to breathe, a severe shortness of breath" should receive TOP priority according to ER protocols. "Over three hours" before treatment is rendered for a severe breathing problem is .... simply .... inexcusable.
I had "a severe shortness of breath" one evening in Cincinnati about 18 years ago... it was my first, and only, really severe asthma attack. I could walk slowly across a parking lot but climbing stairs was out of the question. I went into the ER and told the receptionist my problem, and as I was sitting in front of her giving her my information, a nurse tapped me on the shoulder, smiled, and gently invited me to walk with her.... to a treatment room. Everyone was soft spoken and moved very calmly and deliberately. After they had mostly restored my ability to breathe everyone became more animated. They referred me to a well-renowned doctor who specialized in asthma and allergies. This is what SHOULD have also happened at your "Thorek Memorial Hospital" .
Did you have insurance? If people do not have insurance they may slide to a lower priority in the ER. Not that they should slide to a lower priority in the ER, but.... Maybe you should find another hospital. Meanwhile, see what you might do to encourage "Thorek Memorial Hospital" to get their act together.
