After many years of loyalty to AT&T, despite the extremely poor quality cell service and sorely lacking customer service, we finally cancelled our business cell service, moving to another company. The cancellation took place a few days (not weeks or months but days) before the contract ended in February, 2011.
Knowing there would be a balance, we immediately made arrangements with AT&T to pay off the account with small monthly payments, the final payment will be made the first of June. Despite the fact that this arrangement was agreed upon by AT&T and payments have been made every month, AT&T has chosen to submit this 'delinquent bill' to a collection agency.
When the call from the collection agency came in we immediately called AT&T to get them to call off the dogs and make any necessary corrections to credit reporting agencies. AT&T acknowledged than an agreement had been made but said we would have to talk to the collection agency to get them to back off. The collection agency was called back, told that AT&T referred us back to them to cease and desist, they said we have to get AT&T to withdraw the complaint. We immediately called AT&T back and, got them to acknowledge once again that a payment arrangement had been made and that we had not breached that agreement. Their response was "after so long an account with an outstanding balance automatically goes to collection". After so long??? Since February?!?!?!!?!?
According to AT&T, despite the acknowledged fact that a payment plan was agreed upon and that we have held up our end of the bargain, the only way to keep our credit good and get the collection agency off our back is to immediately pay the balance. So much for agreements with AT&T.

No rip off here, just another case of rampant stupidity.
You cancelled your service just a few days before the contract end date??
WHY??
You couldn't wait a few days so you could avoid the early termination fee??
Again, I ask, WHY???
Makes no sense.

And you need 4 months to pay off 1 months' bill?
How bad does your business suck??
It appears to me that you were already at least 1 month behind when you cancelled, and most likely ran up lots of overages on your account, etc.
Why would you run up a bill that you cannot afford to pay when due?
Again, just stupidity, no rip off.
The bottom line here is that you broke your agreement with AT&T, then you failed to pay when due.
You were the one who "ripped off" AT&T!
Broke a$s people shouldn't have cell phones anyway.

While I can't speak for business, I know for consumer accounts, we have no way of setting any kind of payment arrangements or agreements with you for a canceled account. It's not that we don't want to, we just have no way. If you were told we would, I'm sorry for any misinformation.
As far as your plans to pay the bill, if you canceled in February, then we would expect the balance to be paid by your next due date. Anytime after your due date, the collections process kicks in, and since your account was canceled, that means we write-off the balance and send it to an outside collection agency (OCA). Now, this typically happens around the 30-day mark, not guaranteed, but usually.
Lastly, the OCA cannot report to the credit bureaus for 90 days after the balance is placed, meaning even if your balance was placed with them 30 days after cancellation, you would have 120 days to pay your outstanding balance, almost half a year, before your credit is impacted.
This is what should have been told to you, not that "we have an agreement with you", and if it wasn't, again I apologize for bad info.
Either way, any company has a right to collect on debts owed to them, whether it be 1 day, or 90 days after the due date. This is not a ripoff, just a breakdown in the chain of communication. Even with the bad info, if you stuck to your plan of paying by June, your credit would be unaffected.

Please don't put 'delinquent' in quotes when referring to an past due balance. If your due date is on the 1st, then at 12:00:01AM on the 2nd, you're past due and 'delinquent'. I can't speak for everyone, but my cell bill generates on the 2nd of every month and it's due by the 16th. That's a 14-day grace period, and since I know I have a cellphone, and I use said cellphone, I know I will have a bill due the following month, so it really shouldn't be a surprise.

Not knowing what time of the month you pay, you have at most 2 payments left if your last payment was going to be in June. It seems like there is a lot more to this story if you have to make payment arrangements for a cell phone where you just switched providers. Were you current before you switched? If this was days before your other contract expired were you charged an early termination fee? If this fee was enough to cause you to spread out the payments over 4 months why didn't you just wait those extra days?
Just how long should a company wait until they turn you over to a Collection Agency? Based on the timing of this report they waited 3 months. 90 Days is actually about standard for a company. Even if you have payment arrangements that does not take away the fact that you are delinquent.
