I asked for a break due to medical issues. Then when the New Jersey storm hit asked for credit reimbursement. Was then hospitalized because of my disabilities asked for more time off wasn't granted. So was pushed in a class was hospitalized twice unable to do work so got dropped and ended up with a $3900.00 bill. Now cannot even receive unofficial transcripts.

I am sorry that this happened to you. Here are a few suggestions that I would recommend:

1) Contact the Student Dispute Resolution Center. There, you will be given information about policies and procedures and how to best resolve your situaiton. You can contact them here: http://www.ashford.edu/student_services/sdrc.htm

(For more information on the various dispute resolution processes available, please contact us at 866.974.5700, ext. 4870 or dispute.resolution@ashford.edu.)

2) OR Directly contact your Student Advisor. If you do not know who your advisor is or do not feel comfortable speaking to him/her, contact the main phone number and ask to speak to an advisor regarding a withdrawal. You will need to be able to verify your identity.

  • If you can show documentation of your disability or that you lived in the area impacted by storms (or both) that occurred during the class(es), you should be able to apply for a Grade Appeal - Withdrawal. If approved, you can also be awarded/credited for the owed tuition based on your hardship for the class(es) that were charged.
  • Additionally, because students are on an accelerated schedule (5 weeks for undergrad/ 6 weeks for graduate), break requests can be difficult to navigate based on financial aid and your school year without changing your financial award package (full time to part time).

3) Finally, if you have a disability, there is the Office of Access and Wellness who will help you document your specific disability and give you an approved accommodations form based on your needs. This will usually allow for an extension on assignments that you can use to work with your instructor and keep up with classmates. Accommodations are not retroactive, but they can certainly help you moving forward if you should need them. At the end of the class, you can be approved for an Incomplete in the class, which normally will allow for 30 days to complete the final assignment, if you should need that much time. You have to work closely with your instructor and communicate clearly.

Since it has been a while since you have posted this, gather up your courage and talk to someone in the Dispute Center. They are very nice and will help you. It is very possible that you can work this out and be financially ahead. And, you should then be able to get your transcript if you do not wish to continue at Ashford.
