The company I worked for switched our dental insurance company to Assurant. I had my policy for 6 years and never missed a payment. I am not sure why the company I work for switched to Assurant. I think it was due to Assurant buying the other insurance company out. In that 6 years I went to the dentist 3 times. I know that is not enough but the point is that I paid this insurance for 6 years and barely even used it. I went to the dentist about 5 years ago with an abscessed tooth. I had to have a wisdom tooth pulled. I bit the bullet to keep the cost down and did not use full blown anesthesia just the numbing  solution and had the dentist yank the tooth with a tool that looked like a flat head screwdriver. Basically he just pushed it out or as he said rolled it out. I ended up having to pay about 60 bucks and the insurance covered the rest. Keep in mind this was the insurance company before Assurant took over.

In the 4 years since Assurant took over I have paid $25 per month. I lost a crown a while back and needed to get a temporary crown until I could afford to get the "real" crown. I had to go to the dentist first for a cleaning and a couple xrays because it had been a while since I had been to the dentist. This  was a new dentist by the way that I went to school with. The first visit Assurant paid a good part of it but it was really only a cleaning and I had to pay for some of the xrays.

Now I go to the dentist to get a temporary crown put in so that I can at least smile without being embarrassed. Being that the dentist is a friend he helped me with the cost and kept it as low as possible excellent dentist by the way (Chad Butler). So after the work is done I am told don't worry about paying until the insurance pays their portion. Weeks go by and I find out from the dentist office and I got a letter saying that Assurant wasn't going to pay a dime towards it. Keep in mind that this was not a complicated surgery or anything of the sort. Just a 2 dollar plastic temporary crown with dental cement put in until I could afford the expensive crown. The dentist also wanted to wait before getting a real crown b/c it appears the root may have an abscess.

I know why Assurant will not pay my bill. It is because I no longer work the job where I got the insurance due to getting a much better job. I was using COBRA to continue my dental benefits which lasts a year and a half. At the time I only had about 8 months remaining to use it so I was going to get a few things done considering I had paid for it during the past 6-7 years. The funny thing is that I had already contacted Assurant about purchasing a dental plan from them, as an individual because I knew I may need it sometime.

I spoke with the dentist's office and they could not believe Assurant didn't pay. I gave them all my documentation before I had any work done so that I would make sure everything done was covered at least partially. They verified that I had carried the insurance long enough that I should be able to get anything done if I wanted. After they did not pay I once again took the insurance documents to the dentist office to see if something was overlooked. The woman who files the insurance claims looked at it and said that I was covered completely for the work I had done.

The ONLY reason Assurant did not pay for my dental bill is because they knew my COBRA coverage was expiring in 8 months. The bill was only $350.  Assurant is the biggest joke of an insurance company I have ever seen. I actually worked a contract as an IT worker at the Assurant call cent facility in Florence, SC a number of years ago and thought the company looked like it was a good company. I do remember hearing quite a few employees getting yelled at on the phone by people.

Assurant is a scam. I would never use them or refer anyone to them if my life depended on it. I have since quit paying the bill and may look into other means of making them pay. Even if it is dissuading a couple people from using them by posting my story all over the Internet. Companies should at least know a little about their customers and definitely not rip off or scam anyone in the IT field because we know how to post to thousands of sites in no time at all using modified SEO submission tools.
