I was laid off from my job in August. In a panic I scanned the want-ads and saw the two words I was looking for "immediate hire". I called the number and was told I would be an account activator and simply be setting up people's credit cards. Sounded easy enough and even though they didn't pay much, there were lots of hours offered and after all I had a family to feed.

After 5 days of working for CCA, including one day of training I wished I had fed my family Top Ramen. I could not believe the tactics used within this company. Bullying, lying, misdirection, baiting, and I'm not talking about just the customers, I'm talking about the employees too.

The first two days went well enough, I didn't actually speak with any customers, simply listened and observed. Then I got my own phone. Half of the people who called had never even read the letter accompanying the card! I was supposed to talk these mislead people into spending $200 dollars they probably didn't have and if I didn't hop to it, I was harrangued by four different people, none of which had more than three months experience in this job. I came home to my husband in tears, but sucked it up the next day and went back; I needed a paycheck.

So, I changed my tactics. Instead of following my script like an automaton, I clearly stated to the customers exactly what this card was (only good for CCA catalog)and asked if they read the letter, hoping this would serve as a deterrent. But no! Some people still wanted the card and all I could do was read my script and then pass them off to the supervisor who took their banking info.

But these weren't the only calls I would receive. Within my three days of answering the phone, 30% of my calls were scared, panicked people pleading with me for a way to reach the company and cancel the cards! I asked about the 800# and they all said it never worked. I suggested writing, but by this time their letters would never reach the company before their trial periods were up.

The last straw was an elderly woman who called, telling me the company had taken all of the money from her checking account and please, couldn't I do something to help her? But, of course I couldn't. Then I freaked out! I went to the supervisor and said I cannot do this job any longer! "Why not?" he asked. I said I felt completely immoral and went on to explain my complaint calls. "Those people are lying to you. They're all just a bunch of liars." he said, thinking this would convince me to stay. No way in hell was I staying in that sleaze infested building one second longer than I had to!

Now, months later, all I can do is feel terrible about the 14 people I had a part in signing up for this load of crap. All I wanted was a job so I could buy food, but I ended up neck-high in deceit and greed.

If you ever are so unlucky as to receive a First National Card in your mailbox, please, I implore you, burn it to a cinder and warn all of your friends and family!
