I bet you can make a penny scream...You are really one cheap SOB! These places are open to make money, not break even or loose money.

I just checked while at WalMart. The cheapest oil you can buy that you can run in todays cars, is $1.92/quart and the cheapest filter was just under $3. With tax, that is about $15.00 just for the oil and filter.

Now, at the oil change place, you get a full lube job, and all fluids filled, as well as all lights and filters, etc..checked, and usually get your car vacuumed out. Thats not worth $20?

The overhead has to be paid on the shop and equipment and misc supplies used, as well as the person doing the job has to be paid. In my area, they get between $7-$9 an hour and do 2-3 jobs an hour max on a busy day. A good friend of mine manages one here in Bradenton.

BTW $50-$60 is very common for the full srvice.
I just paid $66 for a full synthetic full service job. The synthetic was a $3 surcharge per quart. So my full service was actually about $51.

People never want to pay the mechanic or the owner of the shop. People want CHEAP. I guess these people are supposed to work for free. Hey, John-Plano, TX, What do you do for a living? Just curious.

That's what I would worry about, as it is the CHEAPEST crappiest oil out there!
Besides that, the price you paid is standard. Of course they mark up the parts and of course you pay labor. So I don't see the rip off. Sorry you feel you paid too much.

I met to purchase oil by the quart not the pint.

It makes sense, when gas was a buck a gallon, oil was a buck a quart (Roughly) Now with gas around 3 bucks, oil should be around 3.30 or so, and it is.

At my shop, the typical 5 qt system has about $12 in oil and filter. I charge $24.95.

The guy up the street charges $8.88, and throws in a FREE tire rotation.

1-What do you think an oil change is worth.

2-Do you really believe you will get out of the other guy's shop for $8.88 plus tax?

3-If you do believe that, what planet did you fall off of.

4-If you know the CHEAP price is a scam, why do so many people fall for it?

you forgot to mention to John one last thing to consider. The cost of the convience of NOT HAVING TO DO IT HIMSELF in his driveway. And John can you please tell us where you are able to buy oil by the PINT? EVERY place I have been to to get oil, they sell it by the QUART. John, Please respond.

The advertised price for car service often doesn't include various "fees" that garages feel compelled to charge but not disclose to the consumer upfront. Somehow this practice which really amounts to false advertising has become endemic in the industry(*). Therefore always ask for the total "out the door" price "with taxes and everything" to compare to other places. For an oil/filter change, the counter guy should be able to tell you instantly, since that is about all they do there.

(*) The only thing they should be able to get away with not disclosing would be the state sales tax, since everyone knows that will be added to anything they buy, and passed directly to the state. Lines like "shop supplies," "toxic waste disposal," etc. are part of the job in any case and should be rolled into the advertised or quoted price.

The price you paid seems to be about average for an oil change.

Remember, you are not paying for just the oil and filter, you are also paying for labor and overhead for the shop.

Also there are sales taxes and waste fees. If you only want to pay for the oil and filter, then you can always change the oil yourself.
