Spoke to a representative via telephone about resurfacing rotors. Told me it would be 30 dollars per rotor.

Went in a couple weeks later, was charged 60$ per rotor. Asked about Triple A discount (states 15% on website for ALL services), was told it doesnt apply to brake work. I bit my lip at the time, planning to bring it to a managers attention. Paid 120$ plus shop fees tax etc...

While working on my car, one of the fellas comes over and tries to sell me a brake pad replacement (told me i had less than 10% life remaining) for an extra 120$ - to which i replied i would do it myself.

Spoke to manager a few days later about discount and he replied that it is their policy that they dont retrodate discounts under any circumstances. Fine, 20 bucks isnt worth my time and aggrevation.

The main reason im writing this RIP OFF report is because i just bought brand new Bosch brakepads for my car. Went to install tonight and checked my old brakepads... OVER 50% life remaining.... Not a joke! Measured 9mm thickness!!

Thank You James Vig @ monro muffler.

It's not listed on the Monro website, but there are different offers

AUTHOR: Chex - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, October 13, 2008

The AAA website says "Offers Subject To Change, Other Restrictions May Apply" and "To locate the service nearest you, call 1-877-466-6676 or visit them online at www.MONRO.com.". When you go to http://www.monro.com/site/promos_and_coupons.html, the AAA discount isn't listed anywhere, although there is a "10% off any automotive service excluding tires" discount listed, minimum $50 purchase and you must print out the coupon and take it in. That's always the safest thing to do... just print out the offer, web page, or whatever and take it in with you. There's also a coupon for

"Brakes Forever, $99 per axle set,

*You get a lifetime warranty on disc pads & shoes. If needed, we'll replace them for free, as long as you own your car. All you pay for is the labor. Semimetallic pads are standard, an extra $25 elsewhere. Plus we'll inspect your entire brake system twice a year.

Our Experts Will:

Replace Grease Seals (If Applicable)
Repack Wheel Bearings (If Applicable)
Inspect Entire Brake System
Install new disc pads or shoes (Semi-metallic pads included... an extra $25 elsewhere)
Lifetime Warranty on Pads/Shoes
6 Month / 6,000 Mile Labor Warranty
Road Test & Certify Braking Capacity

With this coupon. Most vehicles. Not valid with other offers. Additional charges may apply. Ceramic pads extra. See store for complete service details/conditions. Exp: 12/30/08."

To address your comments - yes i have the option to decline - however at the time driving my vehicle felt extremely unsafe as it would shake when braking at high speeds, so much so that id have to grip the wheel as if i was bracing for impact to keep control of the car...

I needed my rotors resurfaced. I should have brought them in right at the point i called and asked for a price... however procrastination got the best of me at that point and the rotors werent very bad when i had initially called.

Before i left the house i checked the AAA website to be sure of the discount, as ive also seen the discount posted in the shop itself. Sure enough it stated as it still does "$15.99 oil change which includes a free tire rotation and a free brake inspection. 15% off all other automotive services and 5% off all tire purchases."

^^^^^ any comment on this??

When i got there, a younger employee stated to me, that "he didnt think the discount applied to this" Fine, i may have read wrong on the website. Same employee also qouted me 60 bucks per side instead of the telephone qoute of 30. Fine, i NEEDED it done, but that doesnt mean i wasnt frustrated that i was given two completely different prices.

Just to clarify, I watched the ENTIRE job being done in the first bay closest to the customer waiting area... The rotors were NEVER removed, another employee performed the resurfacing directly on the rotor, directly on the hub of the car. The calipers were NEVER removed (ill address this in the following paragraph)... The employee physically turned the rotor to resurface all spots.

On to the brake pads... I declined the service, because i saw that the caliper was never removed, so i doubted whether an accurate assessment of brake life could be taken without giving a thorough inspection... A thorough inspection would have been removing the pad and measuring it (which i did). This was never done because the caliper was never removed --- which is why i declined the service... Just for arguements sake, say you did have the caliper removed and the brake life was 15% --- why would i pay an extra 150$ to simply pop a new brake pad in, assuming the parts had to come off no matter what? Thats like bringing your car in for a timing belt and changing the water pump along with it, but getting charged double the labor because its two parts being repaired/replaced. Why would i pay extra for labor that is normally necessary to resurface the rotor anyways? THAT does not make sense.

When the employee came back and told me i had less than 15% life remaining and to pay an extra 150$ for brake pads i wasnt upset, unfortunately i have neither the experience nor tools to resurface rotors, but changing pads isnt rocket science for the weekend warrior.

I gave the benefit of doubt to your inspection of 15% and went ahead and purchased new brake pads for
My shock came when i removed the old brake pads and measured with a micrometer and compared to new spec and realized i had more like 60-70 % left -- i just changed my own brakes for no good reason (do you have any idea how long brakes actually last? i could have went another 2-3 years on these pads before they might have needed changing)

I understand "lifetime" warranty's, thank you for saving the few dollars i spend on brake pads and only charging me labor. Last i checked my dealership offers a 12 month warranty on ALL repairs labor and parts...

To answer your question about who would go home and rip apart everything you did... my answer is I would... If everything was already apart it would have taken less than 15 minutes to install new pads... To me that doesnt warrant charging an extra 100 bucks labor, but im not here to tell you what you should or shouldnt charge as its your overhead and your business... As for me it took less than 45 minutes to change both front pads both sides... that was worth saving the money for simple Do it yourself job...

and sue me, sue me for what? Im not slandering you, im naming you as the employee i dealt with... I heard two emplyees call you "Vig" and your shirt said James or Jim (cant recall correctly) I was also handed a business card with the name "James Vig" printed on it. So unless there are two james vigs associated within this business, which is possible (i spoke to a young guy, thin build 140-160 pounds, 5'7"-5'10", maybe mid twenties) -- I might have spoken to your son perhaps (looked a little young to be an owner, but if he was i congratulate him on being a business owner at such a young age) --- EVERYTHING i have said here is truthful... --- i dont go around posting pretend stories on events that never happened...

You always have the option to decline the repairs ,but you did not overpay. Removing the calipers ,brackets, rotors, and machining them ,is the same labor required to do a full brake job. If the pads were less then 50% and everything is apart, we may ask if you want to install new pads at this time. If you do, the pads are free for as long as you own the car and the labor for 12 mo or 12000 miles. Pretty good deal, you don't get that at the dealer. Who would go home and rip apart everything we did and try to put in new pads themself? Makes no sense. If you have a problem at this shop ask for the owner and we can resolve any problems you may have had. But be careful what you write about me as I will sue you for libel when you post something that affects my reputation as you named me personally and this is a Corporation. I never even spoke to you.

Thank You
