Nevada State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners completely FAILS to conduct a thorough investigation; does NOT even ATTEMPT to contact witnesses!!! Reno, , Nevada

You are welcome for my response.  I never researched the Board's record, however, I do know very well how the Good Ol' Boy System of the Wild West has been maintained very well in the State of Nevada.

I would assure you and anyone, that if they need Medical Laboratory work done, the State of Nevada is stricter on licensure, and quality control proficiency than any other state I have worked.  I have been in the field 39 years, and many different States as a Contractor.

I am sad for the loss of any animal, they are God's gift to us like Children.  I would agree with your insight, but don't let privitization take over the prison system, the abuse and neglect is inhuman, but the Board...heck yeah!  It is funny that there is member on one of the Boards in Nevada who's license was taken away for fraud, or something like that, and he is still on the Board making decisions on Life changing matters!!  Good Ol' Boy!

Thank you for taking the time to submit your insight. After researching the boards voting history (going way back), it appears they have been very generous with "dismissals" since the board was created. During boom or bust, they have generously protected the limited number of veterinarians that have come to the State of Nevada. 
 
I am more inclined to suggest privatizing vs paying who they currently employ more money. The investigator was pleasant enough...she had plenty of time to chat about her visit to the CA State Fair, being raised on a farm and a new rescue dog adopted by my mother. She just failed to find the time to call one single witness. She made it abundantly evident she is either very naive about the reality of being an investigator, or she assumes we the consumers are. The moment she made the statement that veterinarians cannot change records, she lost ALL her credibility.  

She made the statement to a woman who spent her life married to an insurance defense expert, and raised a daughter who specializes in defense investigations. You can imagine the amount of medical malpractice we have investigated with our combined experience of 50 years... Records cannot be changed? We would have more easily accepted an answer of "your dog's life had no value" than to be fed a line of BS and expected to believe it. 

As a former Supervisor in Nevada, it is well documented that the budget cuts and lack of personnel have created a great dis-service to anyone in the Medical, Dental, or Veterinary Services.  There are many reports I know of that have despicable stories of "Veterinarians" misues, abuse, and general neglect of the animals, beloved pets, and members of the family (the PET and OWNER).  This would not be so, if the load was less, pay was more, and the State of Nevada would hire more help that can prove cases such as this.I I will also add that I am a great pet lover, and all my Vets were great in Nevada, but I only used reputable places with personal references from friends and co-workers. 

This agency was contacted to investigate the death of a dog (female Yorkie) with a well documented liver condition after a veterinarian injected her with a drug known to be contraindicated for liver conditions. The veterinarian in question had the dogs chart which clearly indicated the dog was not able to even tolerate Benadryl.   The veterinarian whom injected the drug did so when she was specifically asked to only provide glucose. The veterinarian also never advised the caregiver she would be injecting the dog with said drug. A witness was in the room with the caregiver and veterinarian during this appointment.

The dog had a severe reaction to the injection, compounded by the fact that the same veterinarian did not provide glucose to the dog as was indicated by BSL at the time of fatal injection. To summarize, this dog suffered an agonizing and heartbreaking reaction and had to be euthanized 48 hours after the injection. 

This agency was contacted to investigate the veterinarian that administered this drug because; the veterinarian should have known the drug was contraindicated and the veterinarian administered the drug without the knowledge or consent of the caregiver. This agency was specifically contacted because they are charged with any veterinary complaint in the State of Nevada, where this occurred. Our formal written complaint filed with this agency included the names and contact numbers of witnesses present at the time of the fatal injection and attempts to save this dog.

This agency assigned the case to their "investigator" who presented to the Board on 01/31/13 that this case should be dismissed.  This case was dismissed by the Board on 01/31/13, without the investigator ever contacting even one of the witnesses provided in the official complaint. 

I am an investigator in CA.  I am also the individual who rescued this beloved little dog in Northern CA, on New Years Eve, 2010. After she was cleaned up and provided some urgent medical treatment, she was given a wonderful home with my mother in Las Vegas, NV. I am no stranger to Yorkie' s, their liver conditions, or medications indicated and contraindicated for them.   That being said, the medication injected into this precious and defenseless dog was not the glucose that was requested or discussed with the caregiver prior to being administered by the veterinarian.

As an investigator, it is always a requirement to interview the witnesses during an investigation. To not do so is a flagrant, negligent, malpractice of ones duties. For the investigator at this agency to not interview witnesses and then recommend a dismissal of this complaint is a total miscarriage of justice for this beloved little dog who suffered immensely and ultimately lost her life.

There is no doubt that this Board and their investigator have placed other beloved animals at risk in the State of Nevada by not completing the most basic investigation prior to dismissal.  God help all the helpless animals and their heartbroken companions in the State of Nevada.
