Rent a center harasses customers and illegally calls references and tells them what you rented how much and where to contact..Im a realtor in california i have very little time when I rented the merchandise i advised them that my payments would probably be late but I will pay a late fee which i have done they call me 5-10 times on saturday to remind me of my payment.this week i have had car trouble which i advised them of on wednesday i had my husband leave work and go pay last saturdays payment which was the first time i was ever that late. They refused the payment unless he paid this saturdays payment aswell. They have came to my home when i wasnt home looking for me my husband advised them that i was not home and refused to leave until they talked to me they argued with my hubby foe 30 min wanting to talk to me.
They call me constantly when i dont answer the phone because im working they try 1 min later with a different number thinking im blowing them off i may not pay my bill on time but i pay everyweek they knew my situation before i even rented the merchandise.
California law they are not allowed to call references and tell them your situation. What really irritates me is they break the law they harass you tell other people your situation lie and tresspass and they can get away with it. I may not pay on time but I do not deserve to be treated like a dead beat. They get there money everyweek no matter what. I think a classaction suit againt them will happen soon and i will have no problem signing up for that one.

#5 Consumer Suggestion

How astute you are. Yes, I am an attorney.

AUTHOR: Julie - (U.S.A.)

We have laws in the United States. A debtor is obligated to pay. A creditor is prohibited from harassing, disclosing personal information to third parties or taking any other action prohibited by the law.

As for late payments, the creditor has predetermined his damages when the creditor decides how much the late payment fee is. If a debtor, out of necessity or forgetfulness, is late on a payment he is obligated to pay a late fee. Therefore, the creditor suffers no harm.

Just as in a criminal matter, for instance, one cannot decide to "handle the matter" in their own way and neither can people who work for the creditors.

If they just follow the law there wouldn't be anything for the consumer to complain about. Oh...is that too simple?

Then again, as long as they refuse to follow the law I stay in business.

Take care,

Julie

Are you an attorney? Every response I've read from you is "Have you spoke with an attorney?" This is not a ripoff and there's no basis for legal talk.

To the original poster: I may not pay on time but I do not deserve to be treated like a dead beat.

That's an oxymoron; even if you pay late, collectors have the right to attempt to collect what is owed to them. Paying late is just as unacceptable as not paying at all in a company's eyes. In addition to that, you probably signed a waiver that allows for collection calls and also calls to references. Either start paying on time, return the merchandise, or suffer the repercussions.

one thing people need to understand is this the only people that get those calls are the ones that never pay one time. paying on time is a verry big deal in rent a center.for every day a person is pastdue is another day of money lost for rac. let me explain the system

in every store there are routes in most cases there are two or three. every route has a number of customers in my case we had a two route store and a base of 700 active rentals.i had 300 of thoses customers. if i had 30 past due customers that would be a 10% of my total route past due. we had a ladder system starting monday we did not want to be above 18% on our route tuesday it was 15 wendsday it was 13 then thrusday it was 10 friday 8 and satruday it was 3 % or lower on close. it was also broken down into ammount of days past due. 1-7 8-14 15 and over . we have every one set up on certain days to pay 1,15 every friday or 5th and 20th that sort of thing. i would show up to work at 8am clock in call my route.

i would bring up the persons account on my computer and call them now if i do not get a hold of them i call there cell then there work then there contacts untill i get a hold of them. most of the time i would call a person and say hi thei is jeff with rent a center it looks like we missed you yesterday when could i expect a payment? and most people would be like ohh! sorry about that ill be right in. BTW i loved thoses people .

now let me tell you why we call and call and call.the "other people"

there are people that realy bleve that they should get stuff for free imagine that
im sorry lady but from from the way you tell your story you would have been a pain in the a*s customer.i hardly beleve that they said it would be ok to be late .

now let me tell you my side
i get there get yelled at by my boss becuse i have to manny people past due. i get a call from the market manager later in the day get yell at. call the cusomer and get yelled at . i was told to call call call and when we got to the maximum number of call per person btw in washington is 3 per day per number we would call and not log them and then get yelled at for not making calls. i was so sick of calling people that i would whip ( 'WHIP" loging a call but not actualy making the call) the call as i know that dont work all the time.

ohh then lets talk about runs i would go to lunch and as soon as i get back from lunch i would get in my truck do deleveries and then go to the peoples houses and knock on there door. i hated the point that people would ignore me while i was at there door. ohh and then let me tell you about returns we would get yelled at for returning items. they want us to pick up items that are 15 + past due but when we did they would yell at us. any way i could go on and on if any one wants to hear more e-mail me .

i would like to thank all the customers that decided that they would go against there contract and pay when they wanted i grew a few more grey hairs and a hatered for people
dont be a pain in the a*s customer and pay on time and you dont get the calls

ohh one last thing we never would call a reference and say that you owed money and how much . but common sence to most normal people is if rent a center is calling you and you dont have anything and some one you know dose and they are askeing if you have seen them or have a way of contacting them that n you porbibly owe money when rac calls you awnser the d**n phone and at least make a commitment dont ignore them. then your references dont get called
thank you

I can understand your frustration about the references being called and breaking "third party disclosure" laws, which is against company policy. We are allowed to call references and leave a message with them for you to call us, which is completely legal. On the bottom of the rental app, right above your signiture, you sign that you gave us the right to contact all references listed.

Please also understand that in your contract, you agree to make your payments on time, or risk having the merchandise picked up. We are like most businesses, and need the payments on time. For instance, if your phone bill doesn't get paid, they cut service off.

I recommend paying your bill well in advance to resolve the problem of you working all the time. As for the trespassing, what do you consider trespassing? I highly doubt that your home has been broken into to retrieve the items.
