SAFEWAY FOOD & DRUG Defrauding consumers on out-dated fish
*badbusinessbureau.com Investigative Consumer Report

badbusinessbureau.com just completed a 3 month investigation responding to reports on Safeway's repackaging of their fresh fish, which in reality is not fresh at all.

The following procedure seems to be the same throughout the Safeway grocery chain.

badbusinessbureau.com Consumer Advocate Investigators found that Safeway employees will put out fresh salmon with an expired expiration date. On the evening of the expiration date, Safeway employees will take that same fish, rewrap it and put another date on it, usually extending it another 2 days.

Several Safeway employees admitted to badbusinessbureau.com Consumer Reporters that they have an unwritten procedure taught to them by Safeway superiors, that the outdated fish first be repackaged, re-dated, and is to be placed in the freezer until the next morning and then put out on display for sale again.

In another unrelated incident, one of the above Safeway stores had smoked salmon in a pre-packaged, vacuum packed package from Three Star Smoked Fish Company. The Consumer Advocate pointed out to the store manager that all 17 vacuum packed packages were defective (vacuum package was not sealed properly) and the fish was spoiled and could not be sold. There was a strong odor and it was visible that the fish had spoiled. Three days later, 5 of the 17 packages of fish were still there in the cooler with a $2.00 discount. Anyone could see that the fish was almost completely spoiled. This means 12 customers bought this spoiled fish. The Consumer Advocate grabbed all the packages of smoked salmon, showed it to several employees, recording the conversations, took their names, and then took the spoiled fish up to the manager's office and demanded these packages be thrown away. Clearly the packages were just defective because the vacuum had not sealed the packages properly. Safeway would be able to get credit for the product from the manufacturer.

Safeway seems to be more concerned about having their employees drop everything to show the customer where something is in the store. That's great to have good service. We all know what a pain it is to be looking for something and no one is around to help.

Safeway needs to stop repackaging their fish. This practice needs to be stopped, and it is definitely a consumer rip-off. It would also be a good idea for Safeway to stop selling rotten fruit and vegetables. Discounting fruits and vegetables before they go bad to move quickly would be reasonable. ..BUT not the fish!

This is another example of a company that's only worried about the bottom line. Just screw the consumer.
