My report is typical of anyone who may be behind on a loan or credit card payment. Constant calls, calling at work, calling family who I haven't lived with in a long time.

The difference is, I have been  trying to pay Sallie Mae what I can, when I can. Last month, I paid over $100 to them. Yes, I know I am behind, perhaps it is because of the skyrocketing interest rate. Literally everyone is in debt, I would bet money (if i had any) that these people who call me all day, are also in debt.

The thing is, I am making an effort. Nothing seems good enough. I was called twice on my cell phone, both times of which I answered and was greeted with silence. Now, I understand there is a delay, because they're harassing many people at a time. But, I am at work, do not have time to be talking on my cell phone, explaining again, that I do not have money. So I hung up. So, then I get two calls at my desk. I have told them, many times, I cannot receive personal calls at work and to notate the file. The represenative tells me there is no note of it. I thanked her, and hung up.

My question is, if I am making an effort, if I am answering the phone calls, why do they persist? yes, I am behind, but I am trying. The ironic thing is, I assist people with student loan debt, but Sallie Mae has only offered the program to federal student loans. Those of us who were stupid enough to get a private loan, not knowing any better really, are stuck trying to make due.

I have choice words for Sallie Mae, but I also recognize I signed an agreement and I have to honor my debts. Of which I am trying. I can tell you though, calling me all day is not going to make the money appear. I remember I owe them. If I could pay them consistently the amount they want monthly, I would. I just don't understand collection practices whatsoever. If I didn't have the money at 1:30, what would make me have it at 3:30? And then 5? Or 9:15? I mean, seriously. It seesm my efforts aren't even recognized. it's only responded to with more harassment for what else I owe. In comparision to the people I deal with daily and their past due student loan debts, I am a drop in the bucket.

Thanks for your response. I'm glad you cleared up a few things you seem to think I was confused on.

No, I don't think I get an A for effort. I was simply venting about constant calls, when I am paying what I can, and being treated as if I have never made payment in my life. I am aware I signed a contract, but thank you for pointing it out in case I wasn't sure.

As far as what I owe to Sallie Mae, is none of your business. But when I am $40 shy of the minimum payment, I don't feel I deserve 10+ calls daily - most of the time it being dead air when I answer. I am fully aware of the difference of being in debt and not paying debt. But thanks for clearing it up for me.

I don't have cable, and I literally live paycheck to paycheck. I work a second job, and make payments when I can of what I can. I don't buy coffee daily, I make coffee at work, or at home. I don't go out every night, if often whatsoever, and I save as much as I can.

But none of that probbably matters to you, considering you seem like the type who simply likes to argue or speak down to people. Being that you don't work at Sallie Mae, and I certainly didn't direct this to you personally, your response is odd to me. I went over my initial post, which granted, was made in frustration as I just got off the phone with Sallie Mae. I don't think I portrayed myself as a victim or felt that I was owed anything. My confusion on collection practices is simple. If I did not have the money at 9am, when I just paid $50 on Friday, how would I have the money at 12pm? THAT is what I am confused with. Not how the process works in general.

As far as questioning whether or not I work in the debt assistance industry is what I find interesting. I deal with clients daily who simply walk away from  upwards of $5000 credit card debts to store cards like Fingerhut or JC Penneys or Macys. They "can't afford it anymore" Whether or not they charged up the debt carelessly is not my decision to make. It is not MY place to judge them when they write their hardship letter. It surely isn't yours either.

Would you care for me to private message you my work line, perhaps speak to my employer to ensure I am doing my job correctly? I would be pleased to.

I appreciate you taking the time out of your day to try and tell me how I should change my life, considering you apparently have learned so much about me just from reading my initial post. Try and learn a bit of compassion and understanding, life will be a lot more enjoyable.

But...

You somehow think that you should get an "A" for effort because you are at least trying...Ummm.

The difference is, I have been  trying to pay Sallie Mae what I can, when I can.

- But that is NOT what you agreed to when you signed the agreement and borrowed their money.  You agreed to make certain payments, on a certain schedule and there was nothing that said you had to make the payments on when you could.

Last month, I paid over $100 to them.

- And?  Unless you only owed $100 that means you are still not meeting the terms you agreed to.

Literally everyone is in debt, I would bet money (if i had any) that these people who call me all day, are also in debt.

- You seem to be confused between people "in debt" and people "not paying their debt".   You see you are probably right that almost everyone in the US has some sort of debt.  Whether it be Credit Cards, Loans, or Mortgages.  BUT...a vast majority of those people are paying the debt as they made a legal agreement to do.

The ironic thing is, I assist people with student loan debt, but Sallie Mae has only offered the program to federal student loans.

- Then why are you shocked?

If I could pay them consistently the amount they want monthly, I would.

- Look, you may be totally sincere.  The problem is that many people truly do not want to pay what they owe. Unfortunatly the lenders are so used to hearing lie after lie.  If by chance a person comes through who is totally honest, they are not going to take the time and you are going to be lumped in with every other person who is not paying their debt.

I just don't understand collection practices whatsoever.

- This line just got me though.  You just admited that you help people with Student Loan Debt but you now say you have no idea how the collection practices work?  What exactly do you do then?

Oh, and one other item to think about.  Exactly how hard are you trying.  Do you still have Cable TV?   How many times did you eat out in the last month, yes I am even including on your lunch break?  How about going over how many times you went to your favorite coffee shop and picked up that $5 cup of java.  How's that 2nd part time job going?  I mean you do have one right?    Do you see the point?  If you are going to claim that you are really "trying", you have to be honest with yourself as to how hard.  Just doing a couple of the things I listed(which is no way a complete list) you could bring in at least another $200-$300/month with minimal effort.

I would bet that if you truly helped people with their student loan debt.  The first thing you do is have them go over a budget.  I would also bet that you have not done the same thing in your circumstance.  Where I bet if you took a very critical look at your budget you could find several areas to cut corners.

Oh no before you even metion it I do not now or have I ever worked for Sallie Mae.
