I brought my 2006 SCION TC to The Texaco Xpress Lube 2980 Highway 5, Douglasville, GA 30135 to have an oil change on 7/23/08. While changing my oil "lube manager" also did a service check of which i did not request, and asked if i wanted additional service to my vehicle since they charge a discounted rate for service. He was holding my air filter in his hand while asking. I told him I only wanted an oil change and would take my car to Toyota for any additional service since it was still under warranty.

Yesterday 8/11/07 I was experiencing problems with my car stalling when I gave it gas. I was completely unable to drive the car. I had it towed to Toyota since I had no idea why it was stalling. Thinking it was an engine problem, and under warranty, I had them service it, and was told that the person who worked on my vehicle before them left the air hose off the air filter. Toyota then tells me that it will be $98.58 for the tow and $96.37 for the labor and diagnosis totaling $194.95. I immediately contacted xpress lube to notify them of their mistake and to have them refund me, and they told me they would not, and could only give me a free oil change. =/

Unsatisfied with that, I then spoke to the "Store Supervisor" who also told me he could not give me a refund and that I should have brought it back to them. In response to that I then told him that I didn't bring it to them to look at since I had no idea that something as simple an oil change would cause the problem and had to get my car checked by Toyota to find out that it was Xpress Lubes Incompetence that lead to my car's engine failure. His response was that nobody is perfect and he was upset that I implied that he was incompetent. I may not be perfect, but my imperfection is not costing him $200.

He then told me that he does not have a corporate number or email address only a comcast email address for his Area Manager. I was outraged. I contacted a number I got off their website http://www.texacoxpresslube.com and was told that I had to call yet another number to make a complaint at which time I was told they could only mediate the complaint and gave me a form to fill out. I also contacted the better business bureau, and am waiting for a response.

This Texaco Xpress Lube only ruins your car and does not stand behind their product.

I Should be more careful

You are right, I should be more careful. Live and learn. I never knew about car talk. I have to visit their site. And I never thought of buying the oil and bringing it for them to change, do you bring the filter as well or do you just use theirs? Thanks for the constructive criticism.

Vet all service shops! AAA lists ''approved'' repair shops, and Cartalk (website) has the Mechanic's Files where you can enter your ZIP code & learn what repair shops have satisfied other Cartalk fans. Cartalk (Click & Clack) are on NPR Saturday Mornongs at 10 AM. They are funny and informative.

Toyota service departments are often your best bet. I use the Toyota service department where we bought our 3.5L 268HP Camry because they change the oil & filter for $14. I provide the AMSOIL that I want used so that I know exactly what oil is in the engine of our Camry.

If you go to random oil change operations you will never know what oil is used in your engine, but I bet it will probably be a cheap oil which could cost you a lot of money in the long run. You will never save money using cheap oil in your car. Mobil-1 is available at Wal*Mart in 5-quart jugs for $23. Add $14 for the labor & filter and you spend $37. Believe me, this will be a 5000 mile, or more, bargain.

And you have not even thought about how much unfiltered air containing grit and dust may have been drawn into your engine!
