I am so glad my son told me about this website! It has been an invaluable tool for my family and myself...and it's the first place I go to whenever I want to do a little investigating or decision making regarding a company. Thanks to this website, I didn't get "ripped off" as others have-fortunately.
I'll give you a little history before I discuss what happened. I have been out of work for a couple months now, and our financial belt has tightened considerably. We closed our joint checking account due to our irresponsible management of our finances and have taken to paying cash for everything, on top of learning all we can about budgeting. And without my income, it's tough. Not to mention that when you're strapped for cash, you can sometimes overlook the obvious scam and fall deeper in to debt.
Anyway, I got a phone call from Winston Smith of United Publishers of America on Friday July 11th. Not to disrespect this gentleman, but if his real name is Smith with the heavy Indian/Afrikkans accent, I'll eat my hat. He started by telling me I had been entered into a drawing for $5000.00 while repeatedly congratulating me. When I asked how I had been entered, he stated I had been enrolled by using my Visa check card (that was cancelled in May) due to my consistency in paying my bills on time. That's what really got my attention, as my credit score wouldn't get me a coffee at Starbucks.
He then went on to tell me he was sending me a free woman's diamond watch (which I believe was a scam that circulated a few years ago) and 3 free magazine subscriptions! Wow! (Heavy sarcasm intended). I really started listening at this time and wrote everything down so I could refer to it later. He told me I would only have to pay for US Weekly (which I don't read and can't stand anyway) and I would receive the other magazines free for 12 whole months! Really! 3 free 12-month subscriptions, a diamond watch, amd a chance to win $5000.00! Are you kidding me?
Well, today his supervisor phoned me and wanted to "activate" me "real quick so we can get all this started". This is where it gets interesting.
Me: "I really am not interested in pursuing this any further."
Supervisor: "Can I ask why?"
Me: "Well, after finding your company on RIPOFFREPORT.COM, I really am not interested in doing business with you."
Supervisor: "Ripoff report? What's a ripoff report?"
Me: "It's a website designed to protect consumers from companies that attempt to take advantage of them. The reports I found about your company show where consumers were promised something free but were actually charged, sometimes in excess of $86.00 per month for something that was supposed to be free."
Supervisor: "Wasn't it explained to you that you would have to pay for these magazines?"
Me: "No, it wasn't, and I neither want or need them. And I am not interested in doing any business with your company."
Supervisor: "Well thank you and have a nice day."
Thank God my check card was cancelled and thank you, ripoffreport.com for this fabulous resource in helping me protect myself and my family!
