I called the Urology Clinic & Institute for Prostate and Urologic Cancers University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview to set up an appointment. I inquired on basic estimated fees to see a doctor for a routine consultation as I was referred by another Fairview physican for a common/basic consult. The people at the clinic did not know and billing would not disclose any estimate of possible fees even for a simple consultation.

After the appointment which was a simple 10 minute consultation I was billed by the University of Minnesota Clinic for $450. I thought it was high, but paid it promptly. Then 10 days later another bill followed from Fairview Health Services for an additional $175.00 for "hospital fee." I was not in their hospital. It was at the University of Minnesota campus not in their hospital.

Apparently, since Fairview has a partnership or manages the grounds the patient pays a facilities charge for the physicans who from the University of MN who work in their clinic. Still don't know the arrangement, it appears more of pricing scheme. I got a real articulate and double talking explanation over the phone from some person in billing who talks out of both sides of his mouth in explaining who they separate the billing to maxize what they charge a patient.

This is a rip off. Not only do they hide your fees when I call and inquire through your billing department, you price gouge your patients 30 days later with ridiculously high bill. So you're telling me to see a doctor in your clinic where you refuse to tell me how I'm to be billed before the appointment is a total of $625. Just so you know there were no lab work like blood testing done. This was a simple 10 minute consult.

That's called a license to steal.

If I had known this would have cost me $625 I could have gone to Camden Physicans or another urologist. All other urologists I have seen charge around $300 for such a simple appointment. They have a right to bill whatever they want, but should not hide these fees or refuse to disclose them when you call them before the appointment.

Fairview and the University of MN Urology should disclose "hospital" fees if the bill is going to double from what the average urologist appointment consultation bill is due to "hospital fees."

The strange thing is the entire floor of this medical facility has well dressed employees and administers who walk around and socialize/gossip and do not appear to be doing anything.

It took me 40 minutes from my appointment time to see the doctor. They have no respect for my time nor consider my time is billed in the market place and I'm losing financial time waiting for them. IT's all about them, their fees, high costs due to poor management and cost control which they apparently are trying to pass off to me.

Any dummy who runs a business or organization who can bill on this basis could make millions or billions of dollars per year. That's why healthcare costs are unaffordable. Do we need to look any further?

You want the right to hide your fee schedule and bill whatever you want later. That's what you got! I'm filing federal complaints and complaints with the attorney general's office.

This represents my own opinion based on my personal experience.
