   Although it sounds like common sense, I would suggest that you not believe anyone that you don't know who calls you up and makes scary claims (and wants your credit card number).

   Your first question should have been, " What were you doing in my computer without permission?"  Followed by "How did you get my phone number?"    I could go on, but I think you get the picture.

   There are many reputable virus/malware protection software companies in the market.    None of them make unsolicited calls to consumers claiming that they have detected a virus in a computer that they had no legal access to.    In fact, it's doubtful that the people who make these phone calls even know for sure that you have a computer, much less what is in it.

There are a couple ways you may do.

One way is to use Windows system restore. Assuming that your computer has not be tampered with the system restoration. This would at least fixed some of the problem, but may not be a complete solution because certain malware could be hidden in the location where the system restore does not change the content. As a result, your restoration may be successful but the computer will get infected right away.

Another way which I strongly suggest is find someone (a real person) whom you know and the person needs to be knowledgeable at least in back-up and reinstalling a computer. If you could find someone who knows how to deal with infected computer, it would be even better because the person may be able to clean your computer before doing the back-up. Ask the person to clean your computer for you.

Remember, NEVER believe anyone who calls you and tells you that your computer is infected. NEVER believe any website you visit and got a pop up saying that your computer is infected. If you go to one of a well-known virus/malware software site (i.e. AVG, Zone Alarm, Trend Macro, etc), let the site scan your computer, and the site said your computer is infected, do NOT immediately believe but double check with other well known sites as well because it could be a "false alarm" for the scan.

Also, do NOT believe that someone can FIX your computer via the Internet. It is more or less a scam. You need a real person to do the work. Common sense, the computer shuts down and disconnects from the Internet, how would the person knows exactly what it looks like if the computer cannot boot up again?
