This company charged me the exact same overdraft fee (209.82) within a 24 hour period.  When I brought this to a teller's attention and requested a correction I was told "that's just how it worked out".  This month alone these crooks have charged me almost $600 in overdraft fees.  The reason? Apparantly when you by gas via pay at the pump, they pend your transactions at $1 each for up to weeks at a time, but your banking balance doesn't reflect it, so it screws up your whole ledger!  They never inform customers that they are doing this!

Ledger?

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

Let me guess you use On-Line banking to "manage" your account.  On-Line banking was never meant to be the sole or even a primary way to manage your account.  It was always meant as another tool.  Because your on-line banking is only as accurate as what is submited to them.

When you pay at the pump the GAS STATION will only authorize $1 to verify the card is good.  It is also the GAS STATION that submits the final amount.  So if you have $5 in your account it will be authorized, but if you pump $20 you will overdraft.  Depending on the GAS STATION submitting the final amount can be anywhere from one to several days later. I have doubts about your "weeks" unless there is some network or system issue with the GAS STATION keeping them from updating.  Now, notice something about this..the bank has NOTHING to do with it.  They don't know you spent more than $1 until the GAS STATION submits the amount.  But you know who does..YOU.

This is why it important to keep your own written register.  This way you can write down how much you have spent when you spent it.  So if you pumped $20 in gas you can deduct that from your available balance in your register at that time.

Now, you will hear people tell you of how the banks are evil and they are changing their policies.  They will also tell you that you will be able to "opt-out" of overdraft protection.  This is where they would still approve the transaction even though you didn't have enough money available.  So you will now be able to "opt-out" of overdraft protection, and in your case I would suggest that you do that.  So once in effect if you don't have enough available to cover a Point of Sale or ATM transaction it will be denied.

But in this case this would NOT have helped, unless you already had less than $1 in your account.  Even with the new policies if it was originally authorized and the final amount puts you into overdraft, the bank is required to be pay it and you will be charged the overdraft fees.  Even if you did "opt-out".

The other thing you should do from now on is to go into the gas station to pay for your gas.  They will authorize a set amount, so you don't have to worry about any holds or having them only authorize $1.
