We live in South Carolina and it was time for my wife to get a new car. She had a Jaguar S type that we bought in 2005 and she wanted to get the newer XF to replace it and we decided getting one would be her valentines present. We used the internet to buy her last Jaguar and found one in Alabama at a dealership that advertised honestly and when we flew in to get the car it was exactly what they had advertised and priced right. It was two years old, had about 20,000 miles on it and after a test drive and checking it over we bought that one and drove it home where we have since put another 160,000 miles on it. That being said, looking at cars on line and then traveling to buy one was not a concern for us until we ran into the 21st century auto group.

Here is why we give 21st Century Auto Group a very poor rating:

After finding a car with low miles and still under factory warranty that we thought we would like on the 21st century auto group website I called the dealership to ask about it. They still had it in their inventory and I was told it was a one owner car that was in pristine condition. We looked at our schedule and booked a flight from Greenville SC to Newark airport on the morning of Wednesday February the 13th taking a sizable official check made out to the car dealer as well as some cash to use with it. We rented a car at the airport and drove to the dealership which was about 15 miles away.
Upon arrival we were met by a sales person whom I believe was named Tia and I can say that she was friendly, helpful, and apologetic on the phone after her boss tried to play what we believe were ridiculous games with us and ultimately we feel lied to us blatantly.

First and foremost, the car was not in pristine condition. It had numerous dings and chips with even a chunk out of the driver side rear wheel well. The car had 3 new tires and the left rear tire was badly worn. The interior was abused and we were extremely disappointed that we had been lied to on the phone about the cars condition. Had the telephone description been honest we would not have flown to look. It was also covered in what we thought was rail dust but later found out was spray paint dust where they had painted the cars rear bumper and spray dust from other work had accidently covered the car when the work was done. Who knows how bad the damage to the bumper was but since they had time to paint it, they knew what the real condition of the car was.

After spending a lot of time looking at it and going over the cosmetic problems we decided that at the right price we could pay to have it fixed and cleaned up right so having traveled that far we made an offer that was about $4,000 less than their asking price which was priced for a car that would be in Very Good Condition as opposed to one that was not. The sales person went to a manager whom we never met and did not come out to meet us and returned with a reduction of $2,500 on the car. It was now about 3:30pm and our flight home if we didnt buy the car was at 6:00pm, we had not eaten all day so we were very hungry and decided to get a quick bite to eat and talk about whether or not it was really the car for my wife.

Not five minutes from the dealership on the way to find a quick McDonalds we decided to make a counter to their counter and called the sales girl back. She told us she would take the counter to the manager and call us back. When she did, she told us he was now only willing to give us $500 off the internet price and not even the $2,500 which they had just countered with.  Needless to say we decided the dealerships dishonesty and game playing was something that told us not to trust buying a car from them at all as you never know what other lies they might tell. We are talking about high end expensive cars not cheap cars and playing games like that is something we are not used to dealing with at reputable high end car dealerships.

It was a mistake on my part not to have checked the dealership out in better detail and after returning home I discovered they have only been in business about 12 years and have numerous complaints on the Better Business Bureau website where they are not members as well as numerous complaints on the pissed consumer and rip off report websites. We ended up buy a similar Jaguar (found on the internet and one year newer) at Orloff Jaguar in Chicago. We got a better price on a newer car with more time on the warranty and in MUCH better condition like a one owner pristine car should be. Be very careful if you decide to visit 21st century auto group and make sure you dont get lied to, especially if you are looking to travel any kind of distance to visit them.

Sincerely,

You booked airline tickets on your own accord to come buy a car SIGHT UNSEEN.  You got here, and the car was not what you thought it was, so you didn't buy it.  You got back on the plane, and went home.  You must realize that you assume some sort of risk of this situation occurring if you do this.  I'm happy that you found a car that you liked, and hopefully you've learned a lesson about purchasing a car sight unseen.
