I bought a horse from American Trail Horses advertised as a "trail horse suitable for a beginner".  The first 2 weeks I owned the horse I worked with my trainer & the horse in an arena. My trainer knew that I wanted the horse primarily for trail riding, so on the third week she took it out on a trail to see how he would do. As soon as she started to head back to the barn, the horse reared and bolted.

For the next few weeks my trainer took the horse out on the trail, sometimes alone, sometimes with a few other horses, & both with & without a saddle and he always would rear up and bolt. Obviously he is not suitable for a beginner rider.

I went on a trail ride with my trainer (I was riding her personal horse) & I witnessed my own horse (ridden by my trainer) rear & bolt on our way home. She then had to actively hold him back, circle him, etc all the way back to the barn.

Since I have bought my horse, I have had to pay to ride other people's horses out on the trail.

Horse was as advertised. Author or trainer at fault.

AUTHOR: Owner - ()

POSTED: Wednesday, October 30, 2013

This horse was purchased at our farm in Nevada.  Triple Threat aka Trip (the horse in reference above) was an 11 year old gelding that we purchased from good friends of ours who had owned him all his life.  He had been ridden by beginner and children on the trail for the majority of his life.  He was a kind and gentle horse that had been ridden double, with a buddy saddle for a 4 year old on the back and was a tried and true beginner horse.  He had never in his life offered to rear or bolt.  He was not that type of horse.  Many of our students that we give lessons to learned how to ride on this horse.

The anonymous author of this post (Rhonda Summer)  flew out to our farm and test rode the horse for herself with no limits placed on her.  She evaluated the horse and rode him with no time limits and to her satisfaction.  She then decided that the horse was suitable for her and purchased the horse on July 3rd 2012.   Two months not two weeks later on September 6th 2012 to be exact she contacted me and told me that her trainer was having issues with this horse.  I was in communication with her trying to problem solve from 2700 miles away after the horse had been out of my care for 2 months.  I was trying to help her figure out if it was a saddle fit issue, bit issue…  Then she wrote this Rip Off Report and decided to sell the horses.

I was told that the horse was advertised as a beginner horse by the author above or her trainer and there was no disclosure of the issues that she had with the horse to the new buyer.  The reason I know this is because Triple Threat’s current owner was told the horse came from my farm and she contacted me.  I then discussed his history at length.  She told me that he was in poor condition when she purchased and that he seemed neglected.

The wonderful news of the story is that Triple Threats new owner absolutely loves him!  She emails me regularly and tells me how great he is doing in Cape Cod.  This is one of the last emails she sent me:

"Hi Jenn.

I contacted you a few months ago, having purchased Trip, who came from your awesome ranch, originally and ended up in Vermont and is now on Cape Cod. I LOVE him SO much!!!! He is my prince, my buddy, my prozac, my clown. He put weight on with no problem. I ride him in a snaffle and on a bareback pad. He is enjoying the beach and with his cougar girlfriend Patsy he is learning to splash and revel in salt water. I intend to write a great letter endorsing your ranch, with a picture of my boy on the beach.

Thanks.

Marybeth"

Triple Threat was as advertised.  The problems that occurred do not make any sense.  Why the author and her trainer had issues with Triple Threat where no one else in the horses 12 years history had is beyond me.  I could speculate that the trainer was not a certified trainer and did not know what she was doing, that his saddle was causing him pain, that he was fed improperly or that this NEVER actually happened.

As I mentioned earlier the author visited with us prior to purchase and decided on her own merit to purchase Triple Threat.  She was a beginner and he was a beginner horse.  If this was not the case she would not have been able to ride him at our facility and would not have purchased him for herself. To say that the horse was not as advertised is just a cop out and a way to take no responsibility for problems they caused (if they occurred at all).

To blame and bad mouth my company after the author rode the horse at my facility and personally verified that he was a beginner horse on her own merit is simply not right.  It is impossible for me to know what they did wrong or if this truly happened at all.  The author's actions are irresponsible.  Especially, knowing that I was in communication and actively trying to help her when she wrote this report and the decided to sell the horse.

If anyone who reads this has any further question I encourage you to contact me. I am attaching a video of this gentle horse being ridden bareback, crossing traffic, walking while the rider drops the reins (to exhibit his calm and gentle demeanor)…    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u31CGTAV6m0

I want both horse and rider to be happy and will do my best to help anyone who needs any assistance with their horse and will work with them to make things right.  It is too bad the author missed out on the sweet horse she purchased due to an error on her or her trainers part.

Triple Threat aka Trip is a gentle, sweet beginner trail horse that is currently being ridden bareback on the trails by his new owner and receiving the care and love he deserves.

If anyone who reads this has any further question I encourage you to contact me. I have also posted a link with videos of Trip when he was in ouor care in 2012 being ridden bareback, crossing traffic, walking while the rider drops the reins (to exhibit his calm and gentle demeanor)…  I also have the contact information of his current owner who is absolutely thrilled with him to testify to the honesty of my rebutal.
