i work as a remote consultant for a company HQ'd in Orlando, FL. I reside in Los Angeles, and was brought on board to manage the Southern California accounts. After 90 days, I initiated a review session to get feedback on my progress from my boss. He indicated areas that I could improve but attributed most of the issues we had faced thus far to lack of methodology and resources and not to my work ethic or work quality.

He indicated during that meeting that he would get me involved wiht more sales activities since my calendar was light and also asked me to help document the company's processes and methodologies since I have a background in technical writing. I spent about three weeks straight writing out each piece of the company methodology and also created, or modified, all of the client facing documents.

As soon as I finished three weeks of documentation, he called to say that he "had to let me go" because there just wasn't enough work to keep me busy. I was upset but I understood the fact of the matter was that I wasn't given 40 hours of work each week and ultimately it didn't justify my salary. So he let me go but assured me that he would pass along my resume where ever and even knew of a few openings. I was encouraged to hear that he was willing to help me but little did I really know at the time.

My last day was May 7, our paydays were the 15th and the last day of the year. Therefore, when I lost my job, I had two pay periods unpaid (April 16-April 30, May 1- May 7). The paycheck for the first period was due on May 15th and because it was my last paycheck I assumed it would include the partial pay period as well. It's now June 1, and I still haven't received a check.

According to FL labor laws, the check has to be received by the normal pay day of the last pay period of employment, May 15 (Florida Labor Laws). So as soon as I didn't, I contacted the Wages and Hours Division to file a claim. I also emailed my boss to see if he knew anything about it. His response was that it was delayed due to "cash-flow caution" and that I should have it by the end of May. Again, it's June 1 and I haven't seen anything. The case with the Department of Labor is still under investigation.

As far as him referring me for jobs, that's a bit of an overstatement. He passed along my resume to two people with very brief text and I never heard back from either of them.

I felt like I got played considering the 90 Day Review would have been the perfect time to let me know that the company was in trouble, or that my position was on the rocks if something didn't change. That never happened. I was reassured that my future with the company would grow in a sales and business development role while my workload as a consultant was low. I looked into it to see if I had anything I could use in my favor. That's when I found out about "Promissory Estoppel".

Promissory Estoppel is the legal term used for enforcing promises. In short Promissory Estoppel exists to enforce that "Injustice can be avoided only by enforcing the promise" (Definition: Promissory Estoppel). Had he upheld his end of the promise which was made during my 90 day review, I wouldn't be in my situation right now.

I was also proving myself with this company. Coming in, I was one of only a few people with actual Salesforce certifications.  You can view their page on the Salesforce AppExchange and see that only one certified professional is listed. I was approached by multiple co-workers, all senior to me in rank and in age, asking me good ways to pass the certification exams. I passed along that information willingly and even began studying for my third certification while most of my co-workers were studying for their first. It got to the point where other consultants asked my input on projects that I had nothing to do with because I was knowledgeable and efficient.

If you're looking to work for Basati, make sure you know what you're getting into. The boss may decide to be "cautious" and not decide to pay you. If you're looking to partner or work with Basati, I'm not saying don't, just do your research.
