Bought a horse second hand that came from these people only to find out they listed SOMEONE ELSES dam as my colts dam. When I eventually put him up for sale a young girl e-mailed me to tell me her horse was not my colts mother and she knew that for a fact because she owned the mother before my colt was supposedly foaled. She bought that horse from the same people my colt came from.

When I called these two I never got a return call but DID however get a NASTY vulgar email from them about how I listed my colt for sale. They have done this to many people. Recently they have been under investigation for selling a FREE LEASED HANOVERIAN. They free leese horses that are up for long time leases then sell them. OR they use the line that they have a 4-H'er looking for a free or cheap mount. There is NO 4-H'er, they then turn around and sell these horses.

The Maine State Cooperative extension is well aware of what is going on and are pursuing charges. If you too have been taken by these people PLEASE call the Gorham, Maine Police Department. They are trying to build a large case against these people.

Do Your Research Before Buying!

AUTHOR: Koko's Slow n' IDC - ()

POSTED: Saturday, August 17, 2013

I do know both Rebecca and Anne Kozloff. I have not dealt with them for quite a few reasons. I have seen BOTH sides of the fence on this "Rip-Off" thing. And I am quite aware they are shady people. Becky tried to purchase my grulla gelding when I had to sell him about a year ago. I messaged her quickly and told her he was no longer for sale. (I still have him, thankfully) I have many friends in Maine that are into horses and are on the horseback riding circuit, both professionally and just for fun. A few of those friends have purchased horses from the Kozloffs without any issues or problems, I have seen the horses and they truly are good horses with good bloodlines and legitimate papers (as far as I know!) However I have also had a few friends sell them horses, which in turn they re-sold them to other people (that are also my friends) for a higher price and in poor condition from when they were sold to them. One such horse was sold to the Kozloffs in say June of 2011 in great condition ( I have seen the pictures!!) and two months later, that same horse shows up at a local show with an inexperienced horse person, underweight, with whip marks all over it and a dull sad look in its eyes. (I know I took THOSE photos) I have personally heard straight from some that they are sorry they sold their horses to them and once such person actually traded her beloved registered paint mare for a stallion (under the urging of her boyfriend) that had supposedly been drugged and when she got the stallion home he was un-controllable and dangerous (as a lot of stallions can be) and that when she asked if she could "trade back" they told her no and that her horse had been one of the 23 that died from the whole "cow hay" incident. (Nice huh?) in the end I don't know what was truth and what was a lie, (though I do know that 23 horses, maybe more died, and that there was a big thing about how they buried them and may or may not have contaminated their towns water by not burying them a certain amount of feet under ground) nor whether she kept the stallion and cut her losses, and I have also heard that some are happy they sold their horse(s) to them and that the Koxloffs found their horse a great home or has a great home with them. I currently have one friend whom is "leasing" a horse from Becky, since her husband commited suicide about a month ago. I am only hoping and praying she doesn't get screwed over, but at this time you never know, it could go good and it could go bad. My whole point is, people need to do their research before they purchase or lease a horse. Ask to see the supposed sire and dam. Contact the related registries of that breed and find out if a stallion report has been filed. Legally if you have a stallion standing at stud for most registries, they are supposed to send in a list of ALL mares they were bred to during that year, it keeps the registries straight with what is a full blooded horse, and what is a "half-breed" or heinz 57, or whether it was say, an experimental breeding to find out if the mare is still breedable  or if the stallion is still producing. You also have to send in reports about which mares that were bred to that stallion, were able to produce, and whether or not you bred a mare that didn't take. (That helps with number of horses born to certain registries each year) Whether or not they made up fradulent paperwork, I don't really care. Is it illegal, yes. Were they punished correctly for it, I don't know that. It wasn't my horse, I did my research before I purchased him and he did NOT come from the Kozloffs. Would I purchase a horse from them, I don't know all I know is people need to do their RESEARCH!!!

Let me make this VERY clear. I ASKED the State to take my blind mare and my Elderly mare with health issues because I could not find suitable homes for them and could not longer care for their needs. I SIGNED them over. They were NEVER taken from me. The open containers in the barn were actually bread bags in a trash can because we had piglets in the barn and they got sweets and bread from the neighbors on occasion. Also GOOGLE Larry Smith of Bethel and you will SEE why I had problems there not to mention the state just (a couple months ago) took away his NEW tenants horses too and they were not being abused or neglected either. Larry was convicted over the years of MANY MANY MANY counts of animal cruelty which I knew nothing about prior to leasing the property. Also the barn was uhhh not 90-100 degrees seeing as it wasn't even that hot outside and the horses had FANS in there. They were inside because my Arab had severe allergies to black flies and got severe hives and my TB was in to keep her company, Didn't know it was against the law to keep your horses in their stalls with a large fan on them. I love how people like to dramatize crap that just didn't happen. That's what happens when small town reporters and gossipers (all from Bethel) get their info from bad resources. Not only that, d**n RIGHT I was VERY confrontational when I showed up to the barn and there is the owner, his lawyer and a cop and the local ACO all over the place with NO WARRANTS and would not let me into my barn to feed and water my horses (for their lunch). This was all over refusal to pay the landlord because of contaminated water, junk metal being churned up on the property and injuring my horses and HIS stallion being put on the property that beat the hell out of my horses and tore down all my fencing and bred my purebred Reg Arab mare. REALLY, would YOU pay for that, so I refused to pay him all of $375 and told him my horses were leaving, so he locked em in a barn, took out their water and called the state. The hay was kept at my HOUSe because of it being repeatedly stolen, I had hay with me to feed them and they wouldn't let me, and their water buckets just grew legs and walked off on their own. Interesting. So yeah, I got arrested because I wanted to go in to my horses. Me and my horses are the only ones who suffered, so don't believe everything you read. The Kozloff incident was FIRST HAND and directly between them and I and I actually have PROOF of it, what do you have???? A sh*ty newspaper article and ZERO facts other than I was arrested.

More to the story then you read

AUTHOR: Angel - ()

POSTED: Tuesday, May 28, 2013

All I will say to this is there is WAY more to this story then was printed. Yes I was arrested and YES I was charged. Where do you see convicted? Not only that this was over a land lease dispute that the OWNER of the property created and locked my horses in a barn and refused to let me on the property, I like that they never mention in the report that the thin horse was under a vets care and elderly. Strange and they NEVER got my side of the story. I don't really care anyways, this was about two people who ripped off people. They have sold free leased horses ( I still have the womans name who started the police investigation against them and owned the leased horse in question) and the fact that they FORGED papers on a colt that was born on their farm bred by them. When I went to sell the horse and listed his sire and dam and young girl contacted me and told me HER horse was the one listed as his dam and there was NO way she was his dam because she bought (and proved it to me) the mare long before the colt was supposedly born and she didn't have a foal and was not preganant at the time she purchased the horse. The two Kozloff women were HORRIBLe to try and deal with, the papers got refused by the registry AND they did their OWN investigation into the matter. TRUE STORY FOLKS and have the proof to back it up

As for the DUMBHORSEPEOPLE poster. I am well educated with horses and no dummy and nope never inquired about an Appendix horse because not only did I ALREADY have an Appendix mare, and several other horses and was NOT in the market the whole time I was at my farm, NO ONE EVER came to my farm to view anything other then to take lessons or board their horse and I have MANY happy students, many happy boarders and my horses were VERY well cared for. I didn't just randomly allow people at my farm and would NEVER have been interested in another Appendix horse and I think I would remember this "visit" you claim you made and IF you did, you surely wouldn't be sitting here running your mouth about my property considering I had out of state boarders there who said they couldnt find places like I had where they were from to retire their horses.  I am not the idiot you would like to claim I am, however I am seeing YOU CLEARLY ARE. I AM EDUCATED, I AM EDUCATED with horses, I do know what I am doing and talking about. You obviously do not like me for some reason or have ties to the Kozloffs, either way, I don't give a good g*d d**n about your opinion of me. I KNOW the truth on both stories posted here as do many others so you are not hurting my feeling, you will need to try harder than that. Have a nice day

Abby I can see my your reply to the story that you are taking everything this Angel Kist says as god's word but when i google her name i see this (straight from the Bangor Daily News Website)

Greenwood woman charged with cruelty to animals

By Tony Reaves, Sun Journal

Posted July 26, 2011, at 8:26 p.m.BETHEL, Maine A Greenwood woman is charged with cruelty to animals after leaving two horses in a closed metal barn without water or food, according to Deputy Michael Parshall of the Oxford County Sheriffs Office.Angel L. Kist, 32, of Greenwood was arrested Thursday afternoon on a charge of cruelty to animals. She made bail on $1,500 unsecured bond. State animal welfare agents took the horses.Parshall said he was called to 364 Vernon St. in Bethel on Thursday to assist Animal Control Officer Susan Milligan. In an email, Parshall said he was dispatched for peacekeeping.Milligan said Kist, owner of the horses, could be confrontational and that Larry Smith, owner of the barn, had complained about the horses several times over the past two months. She said animal welfare agents from the Maine Department of Agriculture already had taken two horses from Kist. The property owners attorney, Jarrod Crockett of Bethel, told Parshall two horses had been abandoned. Parshall said he arrived before Milligan and found bags of trash and open human food containers in the barn. He said the temperature was estimated at between 90 and 100 degrees in the barn.Crockett said his client Larry Smith said he thought Kist had removed the two horses from the barn the day before, but evidently she had sneaked them back in later. While waiting for Milligan to arrive, Parshall said Crockett gave the horses food and water. Crockett credited one of Smiths neighbors with bringing hay for the horses, which Crockett said looked malnourished, with their ribs showing.Soon after, Kist arrived, Parshall said. Kist began to rant and rave at Mrs. Milligan and I, even going so far as calling the Maine State Police on us, Parshall said.I had directed Ms. Kist to remain calm, as I told her that this was now an animal abuse crime scene, he said.Parshall said he found probable cause to arrest Kist on a charge of animal cruelty and called for backup, anticipating Kist would resist arrest. Sgt. Timothy Ontengco of the Sheriffs Office arrived and Kist was arrested without incident and taken to the Oxford County Jail in Paris.According to Parshall, state animal welfare agents obtained a search warrant for the barn and took the two horses. To see more from the Sun Journal, visit sunjournal.com.

I also googled Whistlin Willows Farm and read into the horrible loses that occurred this past Spring, and read several articles all state that the horses death were not caused by poor care and that was quoted in every single artcle by the state vet. I do not know either party personally nor do i plan to but do not preach about how wonderful someone is and run someone else over when you very clearly do not know what you are talking about yourself Abby.

Regarding the Original Poster of this Rip Off Report

AUTHOR: Abby - (United States of America)

POSTED: Friday, December 14, 2012

Okay dumbhorseppl. You obviously like the Kozloff's and are trying to discredit the Original Poster of this scam. I used used to take riding lessons and work for Angel and she is a VERY knowledgeable horse person and her farm was clean and nice. She had roughly 90 acres with half of that as pasture land, her barn was always clean, horses always fat and happy. She only EVER took in 3 rescues and she did not go looking for them either. The blind mare your speaking of was one of those cast off horses she adopted from a rescue out of state who lied to her about the severity of the Uveitis and told her she was a bombproof trail horse which she was CLEARLY NOT. Angel had every right to try and place the mare in a home more suitable for her, you forgot to add she had the mare for 3 years, and did the best by her and for her. She was not trying to sell her, she was trying to place her for a lifetime free lease. So get your facts straight before you throw around accusations.

As for the paperwork on the colt, I was there when she was trying to get it straightened out. The sire was a stallion (My Magical Kolors or something like that) at their farm and the mare was supposedly an Arabian mare they owned. When she placed Markus up for sale she was having trouble getting the Kozloffs to sign the paperwork to have the colt Reg. Then she found out that the dam listed was not even the colts mother. So don't throw around this bull crap about being busy and having too many horses, if you are breeding horses it is your responsibility to know which foal came out of which dam. Same as it is to know who the sire of the foal is. It is called LYING, because they owned both the sire and dam(I hope) they figured they could pass it off to whatever horse they wanted. When Angel confronted them with the information from the girl who owned the supposed dam, she freaked out and sent nasty messages to Angel. These people live in a DUMP, have been investigated by the police, 4-H, and several other organizations. THAT IS A FACT. Check with Gorham Police. There you will get your FACTS. Oh yeah and she said she bought him second hand, because the girl she got him from had the SAME problem with the Kozloff's and 3 separate occasions and she got Markus from them because they LIED to her on other occasions and took advantage of her being  novice in the horse world, they owed her a horse and she ended up with a wild colt with little handling. The girls father was a successful lawyer and used his influence to right the wrong these people did to his daughter. A lot of good THAT did.

I was also there when another "rescue" asked Angel for emergency help in fostering two horses. She took them in with no questions and took all the bills that came with them without complaint, even when the rescue said they would pay for all the hay, medical, and farrier bills. They dropped the horses off and never returned or inquired about them. The old emaciated gelding had to be euthanized 2 months later from his severe emaciation and the fact he was 35 years old, the TB mare she ended up placing in a home almost a YEAR later for the mere sum of $700 (with a contract) which didn't even begin to touch the money she spent on getting the mare well, the vet fees for the gelding, farrier, and dentist. So before you start throwing around false accusations because your pissed off that she filed a scam report against SHITTY people, know what your talking about.

UNSATISFIED POTENTIAL CUSTOMER

AUTHOR: equirescue - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, May 01, 2012

I had dealt with Anne, when I was interested in purchasing a paint mare she had advertised for sale(before I knew of her reputation) This was about 4 years ago.  I contacted her, to get more information about a this mare that she described as practically bomb proof but just needed more miles/saddle time.

Luckily, I do my research before buying an animal!  I tried to arrange a time to come meet the mare with Anne, but was unable because of her strange availability at the barn.  So I did a drive by, and was preparing to "drop in" to see what the barn was like. I was horrified!  The property looked more like junk yard than a farm, with parts to vehicles, tractors etc everywhere, as well as trash, tarps etc strewn about. The fields that were fenced for the horses were very sparse and at that time I did not notice any hay out for them, they were standing near the trees head to rear because the flies- no masks on any of them.  I did not see a water tank anywhere either.  The place was an absolute mess, with dangerous piles of "stuff" everywhere that a horse could get injured on easily!  The horses I did see, did not look horribly skinny, but lets just say their body conditions were not %100.

After the drive by, I pretty much ruled out purchasing there, but did more research on the mare.  I found where she was previously boarded and advertised for sale and contacted them! They were very kind and obviously truthful when telling me that the mare was very green, and was hard to handle and unreliable and she would "blow up," without warning.  They agreed she could be a nice mare if she had been properly and consistantly worked with, but she had not exhibited the qualities Anne had advertised while she was boarded at their facility.  Why would they lie, they aren't gaining or losing anything in this situation.

Anyone in their right mind can tell just by looking at the farm, that these animals are not given the best care.  Just think about the horrible conditions hidden from view in the barn that you are not seeing- and yes I have later experienced more of them, as I feel their is a need to expose their apparent priority is to make a dollar, regardless of the animal's best welfare. The latest conditions and 23 horses dead, speak for themselves. Who feeds silage, especially without vaccinating for botulism- if you are an experienced horse owner- that actually cared why would you even take the risk....unless all you cared about was saving the all-mighty dollar in the long run!?!

Amazing

AUTHOR: Dumbhorseppl - (United States of America)

POSTED: Monday, February 28, 2011
I for one think it is absolutely amazing that this women, ottbmommy(aka Angel) or whatever alias she is using at the moment is complaining about anything, she constantly has listings looking to "rescue" horses then turns around and sells them, like that poor little blind appaloosa mare she had listed as a kids horse- this women is a piece of dogshit- anyone reading this beware- she contacted me about my appendix when i was looking to find him a home then i stumbled acrossed her ads for the appaloosa mare and whatever poor soul she had up there then. I emailed her and went up to her dump of a barn- she shouldn't have a mini there let alone big horses. To top everything all off here I read that she bought a horse "second hand" so shes saying she did not even buy the horse from them, what a piece of work!! I do not know the Kozloff's other than seeing them at shows a few years back but their horses always looked wonderful and they always were good sportsmans, pinned well, had very lovely horses, i know people that learned to ride there and have gone very far in the equine industry. I personally would not take anything this ottbmommy says to heart, she is an idiot and a theif- to point fingers at someone else and accuse them of doing what she has been doing for years well needless to say i guess she speaks from experience just not the type she writes about. I can't believe the kozloff's havent taken this women to court for deformation of character, i would encourage it!!

POSTED: Sunday, February 27, 2011

I agree with everything the first person to comment said. I, too have bought a horse from Anne and had not had any problems at all. She was the best person I have ever gotten a horse off of. She actually cares where her horses go and out of all the inquiries, picks the best person for the horse. She was so nice to deliver the horse 250+ miles (round trip) without charging me profit. Only gas and tolls. I asked her about this report and she told me you black mailed her! She would not let you have what you wanted so you filed a false claim. I wouldn't believe a single word that comes out of Ottbmommy's mouth. Just goes to show how you should see for yourself before you judge. And also, don't mess with someone's reputation. It will come back and bite you in the end. Oh and by the way, she also said she has never even met you. She wouldn't know you if she saw you.

papers

AUTHOR: pixie - (United Kingdom)

POSTED: Friday, September 04, 2009

As far as I'm aware falsifying paperwork is illegal and is a very serious matter. If the horse in question was not bred by Anne Kozloff then it is not her error. If it was bred by her then there's a possibility that with so many horses she got confused. She does after all have 3 horses for sale at the moment named Blue, Blue and Blues!!!!!

I have has several dealings with Anne Kozloff and I have been less than impressed everytime, however I understand that the horse dealing industry is extremely hard and she needs to do what she has to inorder to feed her family and horses.

I do think that there's a lot that happens on that farm that people don't know about and I strongly feel that the living conditions of those horses are not acceptible.

The best thing I can suggest to anyone is to thoroughly investigate any farm/person/horse that you intend to buy, including checking papers, seeing the horse's parents if possible, and getting the horse thoroughly vetted as I know many of the horses that I have had from her have rarely been sound.

I personally do not believe that she is a bad person but she is a dealer and does what she has to. If she didn't, she'd have no money to feed her 50 horses.

comments to the "rip-off" farm report

AUTHOR: Karen R. - (USA)

POSTED: Thursday, September 03, 2009

I have done business with Becky and Anne Kozloff for years now. I've owned horses for 48 years. I've seen first hand in many situations, farms and horse sellers who are cruel to their animals, deceitful to their buyers, only looking for their next dollar and falling short of properly fitting the right horse with the right rider.

Anne and Becky not only offer first quality horses, but excellent customer service in which their family takes great pride in.  In fact they will even continue to follow up on their horses even after they are sold to insure they have good homes and are being well cared for.  They are NOT looking to cheat anyone.  Their main goal is to keep a long time family owned and operated horse farm running to service all us horse lovers out there.

I have purchased many horses from Anne.  All of which have had the correct paperwork to go with them, no lies, no hidden issues on any of the horses.  They are completely fair and upfront about all there is to know about the horse or horses you would want to purchase from them.

Anne has gone as far as even helping me care for my horses when I had two tragedies in my life recently.  One was when we moved here from Connecticut and I broke my leg.  The other was when I was diagnosed with Lymphoma Cancer and was completely unable to be around my horses to care for them, or even to be in the barn with them.  When times were tough for me to care for my horses Anne came and took care of my horses all at her own expense.  This is not the action of a "rip-off" individual that she is being made out to be.  This is the action of a kind, caring, honest horse lover and individual you would want to buy a horse from.

She goes out of her way everyday to insure her horses, her business, and her customers are well cared for and completely satisfied.

To insinuate that they are "rip-offs" is completely inaccurate.  Seems this person complaining of the "paper error" they had, could have been resolved if they only took the time to instead of trying to turn the fault on the wrong party, shows this person is not telling the whole story or anything far from the truth about Whistlin Willows Farm and their family run business.  The fact is they did receive a darn good horse that they loved.  Take a good look at yourself and horses.  Are you really into them as your pet and friend, or are you just into purchasing horses and trying to ruin a person's life and business all for selfish reasons.   Look for the "good" in others and the good will come back to shine on you.  Whistlin Willows Farm is a wonderful place to do business with.  I should know.  I have been a customer of theirs for quite some time.  Never had a bad horse purchase from this family.
