Website offered to send a free book and CD for $3.95 shipping, for which payment was required via credit card. Package arrived containing an additional 4-CD set that I did not order. Luckily, I read the insert which gave me 30 days to return it or $99.90 would be billed to my credit card.

I called the toll-free number immediately for a return authorization number and was told that the CDs must be returned in a crush-proof envelope with $100 insurance coverage. I was also told that I had only four days from the date of my call for the package to get there or my credit card would be charged. (What happened to the 30-day consideration period?)

Here's what REALLY makes me angry: It took 10 minutes on the phone with customer service, 20 minutes in line at the post office, plus $6.65 on postage and Insured Mail Receipt. All this just to mail back some stupid CDs that I never ordered in the first place!

#1 Consumer Suggestion

Don't bother returning unwanted merchandise; chargeback

AUTHOR: Paula - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, February 21, 2005

For anyone else researching this one, it refers to Bruce A. Berman and his multiple websites advertised on radio, tv, etc. hawking his book "I Got Here, So Can You" blah blah. (Websites include 55money.com, igothere.com, bruceaberman.com, etc.)

First of all, if you receive UNORDERED MERCHANDISE, the U.S. Post Office says that you do NOT owe money on those items and you do not even need to bother returning it. This type of scam is common with office supplies, where a scammer sends a company a box of unordered, overpriced, toners or the like and counts on confusion within the company to allow the payment to get processed without question. The bottom line is: IF YOU DIDN'T ORDER IT, IT'S A GIFT FROM THE SENDER. Just because the company placed a disclaimer within the package indicating that you will be charged if you don't return unordered merchandise within 30 days does NOT get the company off the hook.

If you get charged, simply do a chargeback on your credit card. The company will eat the original cost plus a chargeback cost as well. Hey, fair's fair! Suffice it to say that unordered merchandise is NOT your problem, so don't bother with all the song and dance that the original poster here bothered with -- it's unnecessary.
