i took my computer in to best buy to have vista put back on it because i tried to install windows 7 on a side partions and forgeting that best buy did not give me a vista disk i goofed up.

so i take it in they say because it is a OS problem that i would have to pay. after about 4 days of waiting i went to pick up my computer. the cost was $120 then they said it was $130 well they fixed that back down.

btw that the cost of vista at the moment, so after about two weeks i suddenly get this (i though it was a joke at first) widows says that i had to REGISTER MY COPY OF VISTA.

i could not belive my eyes the person at best buy geek squad did not register my vista huh. it gets better now windows is saying that i may of got ripped off.

I used to be a geeksquad agent and read this and just thought I would leave some info on it. Im in no way trying to say that you are in the wrong. With a situation like this you would be charged because the company isnt considered at fault since it was something that was caused by you (not trying to be snide), the main issue I feel is the recovery media. Most computers now dont come with recovery media, you have to make it yourself. Some still do like dells but it is very rare. The other issue is that it isnt registered. Sometimes it wont come up until later like it did to you, this is their fault and not yours. The windows default is to tell you that you may have been ripped off but most likely you werent. Unless they used an illegal copy of recovery media which doesnt match the specs of your computer and the registration (which could be likely if you didnt have a recovery partition). You should be able to find it on the computer its self in order to register it (a sticker on the back or bottom of the computer). If you are typing it in exactly and that still comes up you need to call windows because according to their system its already in use. We would have to do this all the time and they were always good about it if you tell them that you just restored it and its saying that it isnt registered even though you have the registration key right there. They will ask you some qualifying questions like did you use the key on another computer and just be honest about the situation and they should set you up with another key. Like I said this isnt your fault but it seems like a grey area to me where bestbuy shouldnt shoulder all the blame.
