I have a student in a fine College. Full time Third year student doing well. i decided to get him a credit card to build his credit.  Put in credit cards for college students into google and applied to Capital One which was the first one listed. He got denied because he was a student despite a 750 credit score.

What kind of a scam is this.

All 3 credit reporting agencies got a notice he was denied thereby reducing his credit by 100 points.

BOYCOTT CAPITAL ONE IF YOU ARE A STUDENT.  The customer service rep admitted They are only fishing for the 2% of college students that are also working full time.

You didn't really do this did you

This can't be a real report.  But on the off chance it is I don't even think you know what you actually did.

i decided to get him a credit card to build his credit.
- First of all if he is in his 3rd year of College, I would imagine he is over 18.  Probably in the 20-21 year old range.  If so then the only one "deciding" to get credit is HIM.  If you applied for this card using their name and information, then you have just committed IDENTITY THEFT.

If you are a parent, cut the "apron strings".  If you are not the parent just hope that the "student" doesn't get wise and decide to press charges against you.

He got denied because he was a student despite a 750 credit score.
- So tell us the law that says a credit card company must approve an application if they have a certain credit score?

A 750 Credit Score at that age means it is very limited.  So while a single inquiry generally does not have that much of an effect on people with more established credit.  For people with a "thin" credit file the effect can be quite dramatic.

Stay away from Capitol One!

AUTHOR: Olive - (USA)

POSTED: Wednesday, December 07, 2011

When my Daughter turned 18, she went and got one of their 1st timer cards to build credit.

They charged her $275 for the card with a $300 limit.

They billed her the $275 and gave her $25.00 spending limit.

After a few short months she was late on the minimum payment and they slapped her with outrageous fees and increased her interest to a ridiculous amount.

She was now over her head at 18

They ended up getting a judgement for $1,800 with every fee and court costs tacked on.

Its now with some illegal collection agency who added more fees and interest jacking it up to $2,500 currently.

This agency calls her at work and home all day long, threatening her blah, blah..

Its a ponzi scheme set up to spider web young, inexperienced people.

Do not fall into it.

Rip off from Capitol One.

Merry Christmas!
