Would cat depot care to offer the "facts" on more cat dumping that occurred just prior to moving into their spacious state of the art facility? Five additional cats were accepted at a local sanctuary that has been in dire financial trouble, on the premise that cat depot did not want them in the new building and the cats would be euthanized. These cats were portrayed as hard core ferals-in truth, their city street days were long behind them.

Subsequently, they were not placed in the sanctuaries cattery, where they would have been protected and able to enjoy SOME of the comforts they were accustomed to. Even Fractous cats deserve comfort. Instead, they were confined a short period of time and then released in an open area consisting of a tree with cages suspended from it and several catwalks.

I was told 25 cats on average are maintained there, but only observed 4 cats and about 40 vultures all over the structure. This area floods out and draws alligators, among other predators. Has Ms. Thayer been back there to see if these 5 cats are still "romping" about.

She may succeed in blowing smoke up the backside of some people who are so dazzled by the "front" they can't see the "underbelly" but she can't delude many others who know the miserable reality that is the short life of these "country" cats.

Also in reality, there were MORE than 4 cats dumped at the Myakka Sanitation site and contrary to what THayer would have people believe, none of these cats were confined to cages prior to their extraction from cat depot premises.

Rather than consult her fractous cat guru, she might want to pay attention to local events, like the decimation of feral and pet cats on Cortez by coyotes and the opposition and debate on removing and dispersing to remote properties, the cats who made fishermans wharf in punta gorda their home.

So why would cat depot deliberately sentence long term sheltered cats to a short outdoor life in the heat, cold, rain and disease carrying fleas, ticks & mosquitos. Further more, no well intentioned care giver can "supervise" 24/7 or prevent a frightened cat from fleeing the premises. I know of a woman in Myakka who took two friendly cat depot cats as barn cats, several years ago. She has no barn and her 5 dogs KILLED both cats.

Shame on this new cat depot if you are a donor, don't finance cat depots ego trip and this hush-hush travisty.

You Are Blessed To Not Have Needed Cat Depot

AUTHOR: Juliet Marotzke - (USA)

POSTED: Saturday, May 28, 2016

For thos who criticize Cat Depot, You are very blessed to have never needed Cat Depot as I have.

June 1, 2013, my husband and I were on our way to the Animal Shelter where they would shortly be killing my 13 year old cats, Lucy and Violet, as we were newly homeless and our girls were suffering from the terrible heat of living in a car in Florida.  We knew Cat Depot was full but I went there to ask if the Kill Facility could come pick up my girls as we were out of gas and would not be able to make it to the other side of town with them.

Then-Director Constance had the horrible job of telling me that they could not help us with our girls as they were overwhelmed already with cats, but she offered to give us food and water for my girls.  We went around back to wait for her, not knowing about the open patios for the cats nor noticing them in our agony.  We thought we were alone, so we were screaming and crying, as I could not believe satan had won and was forcing me to drive my beloved 13 years cats to their death.  When we met Constance and an associate at the back, Constance informed us they would take Lucy and Violet.

We had already turned over 3 cats to a cat rescue representative who was very uncaring and cold to us.  We had released two into the woods where they were born and raised and as they were twins, needed to not be parted.

Constance took my girls and gave us ten dollars.

As time passed, I found we were welcome to visit Lucy and Violet.  I had thought we would be banished from the facility due to our failure to care for our cats.

We sold our car due to inability to register it.  We then had EVERY SINGLE THING WE OWNED in a cart, many bags, and backpacks.

We would visit Lucy and Violet in the stunning facility whenever we could.  I would try to hide myself in a corner or turn my back to the other patrons as all I could do was hold my girls and cry, cry, cry.

Constance found a way for us to store our items in the back of the facility so we would not be unsettling other patrons, and allowed us to visit our girls on the private back patio.

My precious Violet was adopted after 9 months and we were blessed enough by God to by random chance, be there when her new parents were choosing the adult cat they wanted.

We didn't interfere in any way, we just watched as my darling Violet demonstrated her lack of grace and ability to stay on a table without falling off lololol.

We left to go to the dollar store so that the adoption could proceed without Deb, the counselor, having to be concerned we might be disruptive.  I thought that it would be a little bit and then we could see Violet off.  We returned and she was already gone.

I later saw a flyer with a professional portrait of a cat on it, CARING FOR YOUR AGING CAT.  I KNEW it was Violet.

Lucy was, in her eyes, a prisoner of war, from June 1, 2013 until the BLESSED DAY CODY ALLOWED US TO RE-ADOPT HER as we now had a home and income and Lucy had prevented others from bonding with her or adopting her.  We brought Lucy home on February 7, 2015.

Lucy had many health issues, she had come to me along with with Violet on April 15, 2000, from the kill shelter in Birmingham, Alabama.  When I took her to the vet four days after bringing her home on a Saturday, she weighed a whole 1 pound 9 ounces.  But she is General Lucy Patton!

My little general suffered through a number of health issues in the time we brought her home again until she had a small stroke and I took her to Cat Depot to send her home to her true Father.

Shelly Thayer, over a number of months, confirmed for me it WAS VIOLET on the Caring For Your Senior Cat advertisement.  It was Shelly who provided us a free cat carrier when we were finally able to move out of the woods with the two cats who were with us throughout much of our homeless time, and we needed the 2nd carrier in order to take the cats on the bus.

Shelly Thayer is guiding me through the process of allowing my life insurance to pay for the LIFETIME care of my cats should I die with cats needing homes.

GOD BLESS YOU IF YOU CAN COMPLAIN ABOUT CAT DEPOT.  You are blessed indeed.

Grow up and focus on your mission.

AUTHOR: Monsieur LaPedite - (United States of America)

POSTED: Monday, July 23, 2012

To lower your organization to these accusations in this fashion by calling them names and demanding their identity is sophomoric and beneath you.  Focus your efforts on ensuring these accusations are false and making sure you can do more good for the animals you have responsibility to help.  I "don't have a dog in this fight" but it saddens me as a potential donor to witness the handling of this complaint.  You in no way elaborate on any of your policy standards for dealing with different groups of cats, something many people would like to know prior to supporting your organization.  Believe me, the people that choose to donate know the difference between a disgruntled employee, an overzealous activist, and legitimate concern.  Lord knows the world has enough anger and sadness in it.

Slander and defamation of character is illegal-this author is a coward

AUTHOR: Speak No Evil - (United States of America)

POSTED: Saturday, September 17, 2011

The writer of this report is not only a lier, but a coward. You are attacking the most incredible person and the most incredible facility in all of Sarasota, and who are you hurting? The cats.

It is the most vicious and cowardly attack ever. Stop hiding behind your damaging lies. If there was any truth in your evilness, why don't you go to the authorities? Why don't you call the Humane Society? Why don't you start a real investigation? I know why, because they are lies. You are an evil coward. It is perfectly clear to all who read, that you are an angry and hostile lier. I hope they find you and sue you for slander and defamation of character.

Personal experience with Cat Depot

AUTHOR: Sheree - (USA)

POSTED: Thursday, September 15, 2011

I have personal experience with the Cat Depot and the Director Shelley Thayer. As both a volunteer, and a sponsor of fundraisers, and a contributor, I have been involved with many fundraising events at the shelter. There have been numerous occassions for me to be at the shelter for committee meetings, as well as unannounced visits to drop off paperwork and donated items. I have never seen or heard of anything that this person is talking about. I've never witnessed anything but pure and genuine care and concern for the animals from Shelley Thayer.

I have personally witnessed Ms Thayer's compassion and love of the animals. She spends an enormous amount of her time working for these animals, and under her leadership, the shelter has absolutely flourished. The care these animals receive is nothing short of remarkable with some of the most talented vets in the area now among the volunteer ranks at the shelter as a result of her leadership.

Shelley Thayer is a phenomenal, energectic  lady with a heart of pure gold. I have seen her unable to leave the shelter at night until she has stopped at nearly every animal between her office and the door, to offer kind words and soothing strokes. I see this time and time again from Ms. Thayer when she is unaware that anyone is noticing. But I did notice, and I was touched by her actions. This is not a person putting on an act. You can't fake that kind of care and dedication. She should be commended rather than condemned.

This is some kind of a personal attack on Ms Thayer. The writer obviously has some sour grapes issue with her. I agree with Ms Thayer, the writer needs to "man up" and go face to face with Ms Thayer about it. Suggesting that people stay away from the shelter or refrain from supporting the shelter only serves to hurt the very animals the writer claims to want to protect.
