I ordered DirecTv HD service with an HD/DVR. They came out today and I showed them around and especially pointed out that I had existing DirectV cabling from the past. They immediately said they needed to pull three new coax cables two for the DVR and one for a second tv. The charge for this was $195.00! I pointed out that the agreement was for free installation and they of course replied this wasn't a standard installation since the had to pull wire. Now, since there is existing coax with easy access that runs in conduit to a pull box all they had to do was attach the new cable to the existing cable and pull. It would have taken less time than running new wire around the house and drilling through the wall. I asked for a supervisor and the installer said he called one who said the same thing. Of course the supervisor was not familiar with the situation. I called Directv and talked to several reps and was cut off and called back they said they had contacted the Burbank office and a supervisor would call me today. I did not receive a call. I did some research on the net and found this site and several others whith negative posts about Directv. I felt that this company may not be trustworthy and called back and canceled my installation. I can only wait and see if 1. they return the charge for the DVR and 2. do not charge me a termination fee for cancelling somethoing I never had.

P.S I found an email address for charter public relations and another for investor relations and wrote them the following e-mail explaining my dissatisfaction. within an hour I received a phone call from Kody at public relations wanting to hear my story. I was amazed if only the had responded as well to my installation woes. He pretty much confirmed that they had little control of the installers when they charge extra. So I think the installers are the culprits extorting extra money for their own pockets with arbitrary charges. We discussed may other issues such as their lack of written and signed contracts, as many employees of directv had pointed out if you look enough on their WEB site you can find all this information. You have got to be kidding! The fact that they would give up 2 years of $75 a month to let an installer rip off $ 120 (I had offered to pay $75 extra for installation) is disturbing, how can you trust a company like this?

my e-mail to directv
I am leaving my comment here since this was the only email address I could find for Directv. I hope you will forward it to the appropriate parties.
I signed up for direcTv HD. When the installers arrived they wanted $195 additional for the supposes free installation. Let me assure you that since I had directv in the past installed in conduit the installation was minimal. I refused to pay the additional amount and for a supervisor to contact me. I was not contacted after waiting all day. I did some research on the internet and found that this is not unusual for your company. Maybe thousands of slighted customers posting on the internet can make an impression on your management. I don't care what you call your buyer service when you don't fully inform your customers, I call it lying.

Although fishing cable through your house is not standard installation, they should only charge you for when they actually do more than just attach the new RD-6 Coaxial Cable to old coaxial cable and just pull it through. That takes all of 30 seconds and is hardly "fishing." Actually fishing the cable down into the wall for the new second receiver is different and chargeable.

I live in the same area and I had the same problems with these installation guys. A weasal named Sergio charged me for fishing new wire saying that my previous Dish Network Coax Cable for their HD was not the same as what DirecTV uses. But it is! They both use the RD-6 cable! He also charged me for putting my dish on the wall when standard installation says it goes on either the wall or roof. I paid him because he refused to install, but after many phone calls, I was able to get a credit. They said they have no way, anymore, to call the installer. Corporate took away all their company phone books. Stupid!! The last women I spoke to said that what he did was against their policy. I read another report in our area where these installers were doing something similar to them. I think the installers know they aren't being watched by DirecTV and are just doing whatever they want!
