Although this report cites a visit to the Columbia, MD location it could have just as easilly been about several other independent stores in the Baltimore-Washington area.
I went into the Columbia store to purchase a dozen donuts and was surprized as to how "small" the donuts have become. The box designed to hold a dozen could probably have held another 2-3 cake donuts if need be.
I read in the Washington Post and at the msnbc web site http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8135191/ about how the stores are switching from on premises baking to using a central plant in Elkridge, MD. Now I can understand why the stores are getting smaller donuts!
As an added insult to injury, I bought my mixed dozen a bit late in the afternoon. You guessed it - half the donuts were stale by that time of day. I guess if the location does not have the ability to make a donut fresh on site, if you cannot get a donut in the early morning you should not even try.
Small wonder that many outlets are adopting the Dunkin Donuts/Baskin Robbins model - at least the ice cream does not go bad as fast.

Stale donuts

I worked for this company in a local town. In fact I ended up being the manager of the bakery that was attached to the store. When I left we were baking for 11 stores and we were supposed to deliver donuts twice a day to each store. But guess what WE DID NOT! The deliveries were made once a day to most of the stores and the managers were then told to switch out the colored paper of the baskets the donuts were displayed in so that to 'Corporate' it looked like a fresh delivery.
As anyone who ate donuts at those stores would know the donuts were STALE by mid afternoon as they were baked the PREVIOUS DAY!
We all know that this company is franchised so the owner of these stores was not practicing as directed by Corporate. But all those bigwigs had to to was taste the product to know it was stale.
Unbelievable what these people get away with.

McDonalds was voted as having the best tasting coffee, with Dunkin Donuts as second place. Starbucks coffee is not good coffee..yuk!
In fact most coffee I ahve ever tased anywhere was better than Starbucks, with the exception of Dennys they could be worse that Starbucks.
