I have now taken the CPNE test 3 times and have failed every time. I have been an LPN since 1985 have worked in a hospital for almost 20 years; I have worked in Case management and as a med/surg staff nurse. I am well known and respected in the community by area physicans, staff members; in other words I am not a sloppy nurse I was thought to be an RN by most of the staff and physicans.

In each instance of failure it seemed that more than half of the testing LPNs failed, this makes me concerned are they truely testing your skills or are they lining their pockets for the next time???? Who monitors these test sites and who checks up on them???? My last testing site was Savannah, Ga. I previously tested times two in Atlanta. There were 9 of us initially at the Savannah site and I think there were only 3 left when I left on Saturady of a weekend testing schedule. The Friday Lab session was stressful since everyone had trouble with the equipment....especially the leuer lock syringes they provided us for our IVP 3 of the 4 I attemped to use were faulty and the sterile gloves provided for the dressing change where so stuck together it was almost impossible to get them on without contaminating them. All the stations and procedures were timed you not only had to work with faulty equipment but you also were being timed--- talk about stress.

Saturday starts the pcs (patient care situation) there was no scheduled lunch break ----you were always stressed, the only time you knew you had to yourself was the 25 min break inbetween patients. I passed my first pcs but the instructor had to look up my nursing diagnois in my care plan book and it took her awhile to find it----shouldn't an instructor know if it was approiatate for the diagnois--this was done on my time 2 1/2 hours to complete pcs from chart review...to report ..to patient care... to medication and finally to documention. The instructor lost track of time during pcs while I was documenting I looked for her at the time decided but didn't see her and went on was looking over notes. She stated you went over time ,I explained she was not seen on the unit and I was waiting for her. I was passed surprisingly, probably because they knew it was their responsibilty to monitor time and knew I would have made an issue about it.

2nd pcs with a child, my instructor said to me "if I look at you funny, it's not something you are doing, I am in terrible pain in my shoulder, it's not you it is the pain" why was she working under these circumstances???? Needless to say I was failed on this pcs.....was her judgement and critical thinking skills impaired by pain ....or possibly medication???

I have spent more money than I want to know about and now have been left with nothing but the humiliation of failing and the feeling that hard working lpns are being ripped off, because they can't do traditional programs, who is out there looking out for us especially with the nursing shortage now upon us,what if any are the remedies to this??

Really?

AUTHOR: j_nully - (United States of America)

POSTED: Wednesday, January 30, 2013

Many of these comments are by nursing students, or people working in the medical field in some capacity. As a nurse, being empathetic, considerate, and above all else professional is an integral part of the the occupation. The majority of these comments are extremely unprofessional; if this is how you treat people, it gives an abundance of cause for concern regarding your career choice. If you did your research you would find that between eighty and ninety percent of reviews for excelsior are negative and express the surprising unprofessional attitude that the staff giving the exam exhibited. I'm sure there are plenty of people who would advocate that the program is great, but it is not fair nor warranted to be so critical and utterly rude of those who do not feel so.

Comment to Excelsior failures

AUTHOR: TStar - (United States of America)

POSTED: Monday, August 15, 2011

I passed the CPNE with no repeats and I know several other nurses who have passed their CPNE also. It boils down to preparation and controlling your nerves. Just because you are a very respected nurse in your field who was thought to be an RN by your peers does mean you were ready to take this very stressful exam. I don't know where you work but where I work actually taking lunch on your scheduled "lunch break" is a gift from Heaven. The Excelsior program is made for people with the self discipline to instruct themselves through a Associate nurse program which normally takes 2-3 years in the traditional college world. I studied for the just the CPNE alone for 3 months straight almost every single day at least an hour, sometimes more. I  was very competent LPN, also very much respected by my peers and thought of as a strong and reliable resource in my field but I would have never, ever passed that CPNE on that alone. You have to prepare yourself for this. Excelsior is not out trying to fail people to make money. The waiting lists for some sites are months to a year long. They have plenty of people waiting in line to earn their degrees. Take responsibility for yourself for goodness sake !

The CPNE didn't fail you. YOU failed the CPNE!

AUTHOR: Donald - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, October 04, 2010

It does not matter how long you have been a nurse. In fact, being an LPN for 20 years is probably more of a hindrance than a help in ANY nursing program. You have learned 20 years' worth of shortcuts and bad habits, and this is biting you in the @$$.

The long and short of it is this: YOU failed to properly prepare for the CPNE. You thought that because you have soooooo much knowledge as a med/surg LPN, you should be entitled to an automatic pass. Guess what? It didn't work for you the first time. It didn't work for you the second time. Why did you think it would work for you the third time?

If you cannot accept accountability for your own failures, then perhaps you shouldn't be a nurse. Period.

You complain about faulty equipment. You complain about not having a lunch break. You complain about timed scenarios. You complain about stressful situations. If you are not familiar with these problems with your massive med/surg experience, what hospital have YOU been working at??? These are things that nurses deal with ALL THE TIME. Stop being such a baby about it!

With 4 years of LPN experience, I successfully completed the program and passed my CPNE on the first try with ZERO repeats. Students do it every weekend.

Don't Be Hatin'! It's just a difficult exam!

AUTHOR: Upham - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, June 03, 2010

The CPNE, as you mentioned, is a very stressful exam. It, however, is not deserving of a ripoff report. Not sure what it took to fail three times, but most fail due to stress affecting their performance or due to being ill-prepared.

As far as oversight of the exam, the Georgia Nurses Association oversees and operates the SPAC, so it's highly unlikely that Excelsior College is encouraging them to fail students so they can make more money. The wait list is now a year or more, so volume doesn't seem to be a problem.

Good luck to you. This exam is very tough, but is in NO WAY deserving of a ripoff report.
