Saw an ad in craigslist for Customer Sales Representative in Southington CT. It was a bit of a drive but as I got called into the office for an interview immediately I figured I would check it out. Couldn't come in until the next morning at 8:30 for the interview. Rob Boyle, my interviewer, didn't show up until around 45 minutes after he had scheduled me.

The interview went by very quickly. He barely skimmed over anything that I had written down and nodded at all my answers. I was in and out in only 10 minutes and he said he hoped to give me call back by the end of the day. 2:00 rolls around and I get a phone call from Rob telling me that not only have I gotten the job, but that I PERSONALLY am the best of all the candidates interviewed! Imagine that!

I didn't stop to consider that it was fishy that they had run a background check in the span of 4 hours. Or that after weeks of trying to find a job, this perfect position that paid 500 a week had just fallen into my lap. Was told to come in for orientation the next day at 12.

Showed up at the building and was told to go and sit in a room with 8 other applicants already there. There was a large television playing the movie "Transformers" on the wall, presumably as entertainment. I should have stopped to consider this too, was strange.

We were all handed emergency contact sheets to fill out. As other reports have stated, there were at least 3 slots for emergency contacts, which was odd as I had only ever seen two on most other applications. Before I could fill it out fully, Rob Boyle came into the room and started orientation, which was more like a (very well designed) sales pitch.

He asked everyone to please go to the bathroom if we needed to so there wouldn't be any interruptions during the demonstration. He also told us to hold our questions, and that if we had any questions we should "write them down."

He started in with a lot of jive about positive thinking directed at jazzing up the group about what we would be doing. And then he introduced the Kirby Sentra II.

Now, I had never heard of Kirby before, and I was a little skeptical of this vacuum. With its polished Dai-Aluminum head and patterned collection bag, it looked like it was a "vacuum of the future" circa 1960. But he went on to demonstrate a couple of things the product could do, including shampooing your carpet without needing to actively dry it. It honestly looked like a pretty cool product!

But what I should have been thinking was "Wait, this doesn't seem like a customer service position at all. This seems like sales." As the presentation pressed on, I was told success stories of Rob Boyle and his coworkers. I was told about all expense paid vacations and fabulous prizes like rolex watches that I could win if I worked there.

Stack this up with 500 dollars a week just for completing 15 in home presentations (don't even have to sell a single one!) and it sounded wonderful!
I have since looked online and found reports about how they use this dynamic to take advantage of people. Because they tell you they will handle the appointments, they have ultimate control over how many appointments you end up having a week. I have read one report that claims that one employee, who turned in 25 households interested in a free cleaning, was not even provided a full 15 of the 25 demonstrations he was entitled, and was thus denied his 500 dollars. How do they do this, you ask?

See, Golden Circle (whoops, they changed it to GC Distribution so folks wouldn't find information on them online) doesn't hire people as employees. It enlists them as "independent contractors." Which means you are not paid for training, and that no matter how much time you put into the business, if you do not get 15 sales a week you make nothing. No reimbursement for gas. No all expense paid vacation, no rolex. Nothing.

Also turns out GC distribution faced legal action from the Connecticut Consumer Protection Agency in 2010 for unethical business practices including targeting senior citizens too gullible to realize they're being taken advantage of. So, after reading this, I obviously resolved I wasn't going to work for this place.

But what about the people who were in orientation with me? What about the woman looking to put herself through nursing school? The gullible kid just out of High School who didn't know any better? The father of two children who needed work to support his kids? What if they didn't look into this company, like I did? What if they ruined someone's life?

I couldn't just let these people be sucked into this scam. I went back the next day during the time everyone was supposed to be coming back in, with printouts of negative employee reviews from various sources, which I intended to pass out to the people who were there, and then leave. When I arrived I realized that only two people had returned from yesterday, one being the father of two kids. Rob Boyle was standing in the doorway and greeted me with a handshake.

I walked in and said I just had something these guys might want to take a look at, and handed one of them a piece of paper with these reports on it. Rob then proceeded to grab the piece of paper out of his hands before he could read it, saying "Oh, what's that?"

I told him I had enough here for both of them to have one. He saw what it was and panicked, grabbed the second paper I had handed the guy out of his hands again, and grabbed me by the shoulder before beginning to march me out of the room. As he was doing so I called out over my shoulder, as neither of these two had gotten any of these papers before Rob jumped on me-

"You guys, just go online when you get home and look up GC Distribution, Golden Circle! It's a scam!" I managed to get it all out for them to hear before Rob pulled me out into the hallway and shut the door. He was notably agitated, and was saying things like "you're going to f**k with my business?" as he pulled me out towards the parking lot.

As he opened the door and pushed me out he called me a loser. I turned around and replied that "at least I don't make my living on the backs of innocent people!" He got visibly mad and walked up to me, removing his cheap suit jacket and stepping up to me in the middle of the parking lot, then got up in my face.

"You got somethin' to say? You wanna' fight me? I'll kick the s**t out of you." His nose was no more than 3 inches from mine. I'm like, 150 pounds no muscle and this dude is probably 230. I was scared.

"No, I don't wanna' fight you! Obviously, look at me! What are you going to do, beat me up right here in the parking lot in front of where you work?" I stepped back from him.

"Get the f**k out of here, and don't ever come back dude, just get in your car and go."

So I left.

I mean.. Do I even need to say anything else? Avoid both GC Distribution, Rob Boyle, and his Southington office at all costs!

Oh, and if you're going to buy a Kirby vacuum clenaer? Go online to do it! I saw 'em for as low as $899 unused and in box!

I work there, too. I came in being lied to, but I'm not an average-joe, either. I know their recruiting tactics are off, but if I told you what it was you'd walk out and read an online comment about scams and never come back! Fact: I make over 700$ a week selling these machines because I saw through the BS-15 demo a week fall-back for you lazy people. Fact: I've been promoted twice and pay incresed each time. Fact: if you try to be lazy in kirby you make no money.

Rob Boyle comes to his own defense

AUTHOR: Joseph - ()

POSTED: Monday, July 15, 2013

The only people present during the events described in my incident report were myself, (I go by Joseph because my dad's name is also Frank, so the allegation I'm using a fake name is baseless) Rob Boyle, and two other applicants. So unless the two other applicants have known Rob for long enough to assess that he has a "heart of gold", this rebuttal is either 1) Rob coming onto this site and pretending to be a third party in order to reassure us that Rob Boyle "really is a good guy, other people think so, honest!" or 2) someone at GC who was not present for these events, in which case the information they would have regarding them would be based upon Rob's account of the incident, and Rob's account alone.

Secondly, if you look on this website, you can see various reports on a company called Golden Circle in SOUTHINGTON, CT. A company that at the time was called Golden Circle, was located at the same street as "GC Distribution", and was also in the business of selling Kirby Vacuum cleaners. These reports state that the sign on the business at that time said "Golden Circle" with the smaller word Kirby underneath it. Today the sign reads GC distribution. Obviously there has been a name change.

What the rebuttee is stating is that "GC Distribution," located at 1049 Queen Street, Southington CT in the business of selling Kirby vacuum cleaners, is not affiliated with and was never formerly "Golden Circle Distribution," located at 1049 Queen street, Southington CT! Don't believe me? Click the link below, it was posted to this site in 2008.

http://www.ripoffreport.com/r/Golden-Circle/Southington-Connecticut/Golden-Circl-Kirby-Dont-be-tricked-by-vague-ad-pickers-packers-display475-a-week-ga-308032

In other words, he's saying these two companies have absolutely nothing to do with each other. Does anyone reading this buy that?

The fact that Kirby has been around 99 years doesn't make it a sound company. Do a quick google search for "Kirby scam" if you don't feel like taking a single person's word on this.

Also take into account that the Better Business Bureau was criticized by the ATTORNEY GENERAL of CT in 2010 for being "no better than a pay to play scheme that rewards companies that pay BBB dues with higher scores" (http://news.consumerreports.org/money/2010/11/better-business-bureau-connecticut-ag-abc.html), and Rob's assertion that this debunks other folks allegations of the company's wrongdoing is hardly reassuring.

Consider for a moment why I would take the time to go in and try to warn these people away from this company.

I'm a 21 year old kid in the middle of looking for employment. I had nothing to gain from driving out there. In fact, I'm was sacrificing my own time and money to drive back out to the location for the sole purpose of warning these people. This was done not out of some childish desire to "make trouble," as Rob asserts above, but out of concern for my fellow human beings. I felt these people at least had the right to know what was being said about this company so they could make an informed decision for themselves. If Rob truly believes that my allegations are false, why would he rip the papers I brought in out of their hands? Out of my hands?

So obviously I wouldn't have anything material to gain from doing this. On the other hand, Rob Boyle's financial success rides (partially) on his ability to paint me as some sort of snot nosed punk looking to stir the pot.

It deeply saddens me to know that the 2 remaining people (out of the 10 who had attended orientation) who had showed up the next day reacted in such a way, if the rebutter's statements are indeed true. I hope that they change their minds and decide to look into the company before they are taken advantage of much like the others who have posted on this website since GC Distribution in Southington surfaced in 2008.

As far as hanging out at the "Need Prayer?" tent after these events transpired? I was really shaken up from having this guy who was twice my size get up within inches of my face in the parking lot and threatening me with physical violence if I didn't leave the premesis. And I needed to cool off and calm down before I got back on the road. And speaking with someone about their faith seemed like a good way to do that.

But of course, the fact that I ommissed this (completely irrelevant) information from my report proves I must be lying. But while we're on the subject, let me say that for the first 5-10 minutes I was over at that prayer tent, Rob Boyle was standing outside of the building staring daggers at me.

As Rob said in his rebuttal, there are 3 sides to every story, one person's side, the other person's side, and then the truth. While he would like you to believe that his account of what happened is the truth, you as the reader know that at the most it is his side of the story.

The truth, for all intents and purposes, is what you decide for yourself after having heard both sides.

So, having heard both sides of this story, let me ask you, the reader, a question.

Who do you think has something to gain from lying about this incident? Me, or Rob Boyle?

Get your facts right. One 'heck' of a story though.

AUTHOR: 3 Sides to Every Story - ()

POSTED: Monday, July 15, 2013

This kid "Joseph" makes one great story teller. This young, 21 year old gentleman should receive an award for story telling. Let me start out by saying that there are 3 sides to every story: one side, another side, and then the truth. I will tell you the truth about what happened and everything this young man "JOSEPH" said, which is not even his real name. So there is the first lie right there.

His interview was scheduled for July 11th at 9:30 am. We do not open our doors to 9:00. He showed up at 8:30 really early on his own accord which is a good sign of a good applicant. The interview went well and he was one of the top interviews for the day. Young, motivated, people person, etc.. He passed a background check. Anybody with any sense knows a background check online only takes 5 minutes to pull a background. The secretary called some personal references to varify his personality and any work habits which he passed.

He was accepted for orientation and brought in Friday, July 12th for 12:00. A movie was playing which was not "Transformers" but rather "the Avengers" but clearly shows he does not pay attention to much. (Movie however is really irrellevant) Applicants like to show up early for orientation to show their worth so a movie is on just so they are not sitting in a silent, quiet, and awkward room for their first day of work.

As far as him never hearing of Kirby before? Kirby has been around for 99 years and is mentioned in the interview. All applicants know they are working for the Kirby company prior to coming to orientation. No sales are required to make any money in Kirby. There are various positions available from Customer Service/Sales Rep to Appointment Setters/telemarketers. Applicants are able to choose which one they would like to do after the orientation process.

The rest of his rambling is hear say. He went through an orientation and is basing his decision on others peoples words. None of which are true. Golden Circle Distribution or GC Distribution has been in business for 10+ years with a B+ rating on the BBB. We service 100,000 customers a year out of our main office in Southington, CT with less than 15 complaints a year. Geico guarentees an 97% satisfaction guareentee? Our numbers are better. Do the math. There will be unhappy and unreasonable customers as well as 'employees' or reps at any business.

As far as the legal action in 2010? That was not our office. Each kirby office is independently owned. That was an office in Naugatuck, CT which was owned by a different owner and Kirby has shut them down. They are no longer in business. Our owner has nothing to do with that office. Similiar to Dunkin Donuts having different owners with similiar poilicies. If the owners of Dunkin Donuts do not follow the policies, they get shut down. Exactly what happened with this situation.

Kirby has provided many people a solid career. Just in the Southington office alone there are people that have been here from 2 months all the way to 15 years. Families and personal lives have been positively affected by the kirby business. Ask anyone who has been in kirby for longer than 1 week how good Kirby has been to them. The problem lies here: Those people do not go online and brag how successful they are... just the people that are lazy and do not work hard like to blame the office. Similiar to having a bad experience at a restuarant? How many people to you complain to? HUNDREDS. What about when you have a great experience? 1-2 people? Exactly the point.

If Golden Circle aka GC Distribution (never changed name by the way... McDonalds? Mickie D's?) did not do things fairly and ethically and was a "scam" how would they have a business for 10+ years with so many successful people? Put two and two together.

As far as the "physical altercation" on Saturday is concerned. He was trespassing at this point and there was no physical altercation. He was asked to leave the office and he did not so he was escorted out of the office. Anybody that knows Rob Boyle knows he has a heart of gold, a clean criminal background, and really cares about people. He has been with the business for 7 years in October with no prior incidents.

He forget to mention that he "hung out" around the office with the church group next door for 2 hours after the incident and nothing else happened at that point.

In conclusion, GOLDEN CIRCLE aka KIRBY AKA GC DISTRIBUTION is a great place to work with good business ethics. There are 3 sides to every story. Do not let some young kid ruin a good future you could potentially have with the company. The 2 people left in the room that day laughed at this kid for how he acted and how he wasted his and everyones time. It is a shame really, he potentially could have changed his life for the better but instead look where he is, complaining on some website instead of making money and getting ahead in life.

GC is here to stay and anyone who is looking for a good career should definetly stick it out and give it a try.
