I obtained car and motorcycle ins. from Geico after the expiration of my previous policy.

I recieved thick packets for both my motorcycle and car. Breezed through them and put them away. I recieved all kinds of Geico mail after that, glanced briefly and put it away, not interested in increasing or adding to my policy and feeling most of it was typical junk mail.
I recieved a cancellation notice for my motorcycle ins 7 months later.

I called to find out why. It was stated that since I did not respond rejecting the uninsured motorist insurance I was force charged $200. Since I didnt pay the $200, The actual $200 that I orignally paid for my motorcycle coverage was then transfered to the uninsured motorist payment thereby cancelling my insurance with still 5 months left of coverage.

This did not occur with my car ins. coverage with Geico and this did not occur in any of the many policys I've held previously in my 24 years of vehicle coverage.
How is this legal.

I was not informed at any time in my obtaining this insurance that were I to not refuse this coverage I would be automatically charged for it and in the end my policy would be prematurely cancelled.

How can they do this?

As a fixed income person, my registration is now suspended on my motorcycle until I establish a new policy which I wouldnt have to do til april.

Unfortunately, to reject certain coverages in some states, you must sign to know you are rejecting it.

It seems you did not want to carry the coverage. Since you were not in an office to sign, the paperwork is mailed to you or sometime e-mailed to you.

Since they do not have proof within 30 days or whatever time limit, they would have to add it on the policy since, most likely, the state you live in requires the coverage be rejected in writing.

In most cases as an agent, they will advise you that to keep it rejected you must sign the form you receive or it will be added back on. Of course, it is possible that they did not say it and since you did not open your mail, you did not see it and the fault would fall on both of you, it could also be that you did not understand or let the conversation go as many people do. Many people start insurance policies and don't really listen to what all is being said and are only interested in hearing, we started your policy and you are insured. Here is your policy number.

Not all things are remembered and insurance has many guidelines and things that must be done. That is why GEICO agents go through a lot of training and are constantly monitored on calls, to give you all this information.

I'm sure you can be honest and say that is possible that you missed it, if it was said. I am sure if it was said, it was in the same tone as the rest of the conversation and it just how many people are, including myself.

It seems that since they had to put it on there since the form was not received back, it increased your premium causing you to be behind in payments.

Legally, you were behind in payments and the policy was cancelled and you received the forms to reject the coverage and it was not mailed in. It sucks, but far to many people do not know anything about insurance and as much as some insurance companies try, you can make people learn or want to understand. Not saying anything bad about you, but it's hard to hold someone's hand through the in and outs of insurance.

Insurance agents, for the most part, have to study and learn, pass test and be continually educated on insurance. 15 minutes getting a quote and setting up a policy isn't going to do that.

Geico motorcycle ins. scam

I was hoping for some insight on if it's even legal what they have done. I have never had this occur in all my years of obtaining insurance. I was truly under the impression they were trying to sell me more insurance. I did not get the impression from the letters they sent that it was mandatory I refuse or I would lose my ins. It was never presented to me that way on the day I secured my ins. with them. I dont know why they didnt just deal with this aspect on the day I bought the insurance. Why did they have to drag it out like that? It was unexpected to say the least and smells like a scam. I want the remainder of my insurance back. how do I get it reinstated?
