Hughesnet has an arrogant attitude and is not user friendly!! Trying to get information using their website is a lengthy and annoying process. Even with my client number, my phone number, and my serial number for their equipment, it took almost an hour to sign in to their site.

When I tried to cancel my service, they told me they would charge $300 because I was cancelling the contract early. I have had Hughesnet service for the past 6 years!! Their reasoning: about a year ago they sent me an email telling me they were offering me a free upgrade; they said there were no strings attached and they were offering it to maintain "excellent customer satisfaction". I told them I'd take the upgrade (which was supposed to make my very slow service faster). Now, they say by getting the upgrade I agreed to renew my contract with Hughes and now I haven't had the new contract long enough to cancel my subscription without a penalty. I don't remember signing anything or seeing anything about a new contract, but of course I don't have any paperwork so can't prove it. And besides, why would I need to renew my contract when I already had a contract? On top of it all, the "upgrade" did nothing to improve my service. I think it was all a ploy just to lock people into a new contract so they wouldn't cancel their service.

I decided to cancel the service anyway -- paid the $300 just to get rid of this lousy service and rude company! I bought a 3G plugin for $10 at (((competitor's name redacted))), plugged it into my computer, and get faster internet service than I ever had with Hughes. I pay (((redacted))) a monthly fee that is LESS expensive than Hughes. Hughes, you are an outdated company we don't need anymore!

sorry, allowing you to give a competitors name would instigate others to just file against their competition, to only come back later to suggest their company, ..plus, if you post a competitors name more than likely they will show up on search engines as a Rip-off! - - your comments on this policy are welcome. Hughesnet stinks

AUTHOR: TexasLady - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, December 01, 2009

I live in a small town and unfortunately Hughesnet is one of only 2 choices for internet service. It really stinks and I am seriously sick of talking to their unhelpful customer service in India.

The FAP cap is awful and we exceed it at least once a week. They tell us 24 hours - well it capped yesterday at about 11am and here it is now 10pm the next day, one wasted phone call telling me it would be up in a few hours (5 hours ago!) and the FAP is STILL showing exceeded.

Of course if it is cloudy, or raining, or pretty much anything but full bright sunshine, it seems to have issues. No one in our house has downloaded anything or watches streaming video or any of the things that trigger the FAP cap, but it triggers anyway.

The only other choice is out of the question - no way. My son has it and he exceeded the 5g download cap per month and got socked with a whopping $200 bill! I asked when our contract with Hughes runs out and found that I still have a full year left - if I cancel early they told me it would be $400 (not $300 like the OP, why is that?)!

This service is absolutely horrible and I think the first words they teach their customer service people are "Let me inform you that....", I actually hung up on the billing person when I was transferred after telling her for the 4th time that their 'tech support' was of no help and she started with the "Let me inform you that I will transfer you to the best technical support person", I couldn't take it anymore.

I am so fed up with these people. If you are considering Hughesnet and you have other options - take the other choice! Slow speeds, rediculously low download cap, horrible customer service that you can barely understand, and they really stick you with their prices. I am another very dissatisfied customer!!
