I just found out today that Mel Clayton Ford is closing their doors tomorrow. They have been sold to a big conglomerate that will be at 1400 E. Camelback and called Camelback Ford.
I purchased a 2007 Ford Fusion in November 2007 and also purchased, for $500, the Mel Clayton Platinum Rewards Card. This service was to provide the scheduled oil changes and service maintenance for no additional charge. I have had one oil change so far which would have cost about $30.
Camelback Ford is not honoring this program and Mel Clayton is not going to do anything about it. It's just my tough luck so I am out $470. Kind of seems wrong to me.

Mel Clayton was never owned by Berge

Joe, as a former employee of Mel Clayton I can tell you that it was never owned, or operated in any way, shape, or form by the Berge Family. The dealership was always run by the Clayton Family. You need to get your fact straight before you start saying things that just are not true. Now, to the poor customer that started this complaint. I've got to tell you to not be too hard on the salesman that sold you the contract. He probably was not aware that the dealership was being sold. I worked there for 11 years and I can tell you that the owners and upper management there never let the employees know what major changes were in store until after the fact. That salesman that sold you the contract proabably found out that the dealership was being sold the same day that you did. If it makes you feel any better, the local paper stated on the day of the sale that while the dealership was sold, most employees were not retained. It is a good bet that saleman did n't have a job the next day. As far as I've been able to find out, the only employees that were retained, were in the service dept.

Why not buy a warranty?

If I am buying a car I would recommend buying a ext service contract. The car is going to breakdown at some point so why not be covered. My only reccomendation would be to buy the MANUFACTURERS EXT WARRANTY. It is thier product and they are less likely to not cover something. I have bought only manufacturers warranties and have never been dissatisfied with the coverage. It has also saved me thousands of dollars in covering repairs, so I would have to disagree with the extended warranty part, they are a good idea as long as its a manufacturers warranty.

Mel Clayton Ford has been owned by the Berge Group for several years. They also own Berge Ford, Berge Lincoln-Mercury, Berge Volkswagon / Berge Mazda (all in Mesa) and in Scottsdale...they own (or used to own) Nissan of Scottsdale. They may own other dealerships in the valley as well. My experiences with their locations have always been positive.

When you buy a new, or used, car
*Never buy a maintanence program. You really won't save anything and you loose flexibility.
*Never buy an extended warranty- read the complaints here.
*Never buy rustproofing- the manufacturers have provided it.
*Never buy an interior protection package- you can do this yourself for $25.
*Never buy VIN-onto-window etching- who steals windshields?
And get your financing, if you need financing, at a trusted bank or credit union before you ever walk inta a dealership.
Also, read Consumer Reports.
And remember, if a new car really needs an extended warranty, don't buy that car. CR publishes detained reliability records on almost all cars up to six years old.
