It took me a while to get on this board, but I felt I had to. I am an ex-Movex employee who worked there for 3 years. Whenever we had potential customers discuss reading negative posts on Rip-Off Report type boards, I would always say. "You can't always believe what you read on an internet board. It's too easy for anybody to get on and post negative things. It could be a disgruntled ex-employee or a competitor."

I am here to say, that is part true but not entirely. I recognize 3 of the names out of the group of "bad" posts on this board. I can attest that they were all Movex customers, and had a real lousy experience with Movex.

I am also here to say that I am most definitley NOT a disgruntled ex-employee. I actually liked working there. My co-workers were great. The powers at the top were really kind as well. The Stuarts, Jeff's, Molly's, and Ross's of the Movex World are a nice family and a pleasant group to work for.

With that said....they don't have a clue when it comes to running a business. I've been around a while and have seen many company's and how they deal with customer service. This is by far the worst company I've ever seen. You read posts on here saying "I had to wait days for a return call from my Movex Rep". Absolutey TRUE.

Movex would put its Reps in such a terrible position. I spent more of my time throughout the day "putting out customer fires" than I did selling the crappy Movex service. The reason for this is for the SIMPLE FACT that Movex is a BROKER. They own No trucks, have NO professional drivers on the payroll, and have absolutely NO control of what goes on during the moves they are booking. Here are my big 3 warnings about using a company like Movex

1.I'm sure by now you have read some of the other posts on here. "Movex called 2 days before my move date and said, our truck has broken down and won't be here for 3 days" News flash....there was never a truck in the first place, and now the 2 Movex customer service reps are running around at the 11th hour trying to find you a truck. A company like Movex books business first and deals with findind a truck later in the equation. I would book a move 3 weeks before the "Move Date" take your full payment by credit card and then it would be up to our Load Planners to find you a truck. If you're moving out of San Francisco on June 12th, you better hope Movex has one of their brokered trucking company's in that area. If not, you get the call. "we're sorry to inform you but your truck has broken down in Arizona, and won't be there until June 16th. That's great, but you've already booked a labor company, friends to help pack on the 12th, maybe airline tickets to fly out on the 12th. My point is...Movex has NO control of your truck being there on the 12th because Movex doesn't own or operate the truck.

2.The cost of using a broker is ridiculous. Why would you pay Movex $2000 to do a move for you when you could call Broadway Express directly and pay 30% less?? That's right!! 30% is what Stu and the gang at Movex need to earn per move in order to stay in business. They told us that is their "Margin". So Movex is going to charge you $2000. Broadway Express will charge you $1400. Guess what?? Broadway express is Movex's number one carrier. So Movex pays BE 1400 they take 600 and let's all hope your truck shows up. If I had to give any advice, I would say USE A COMPANY THAT OWNS THEIR OWN FLEET. YOU'RE SETTING YOURSELF UP FOR FAILER IF YOU DON'T!!! There are a lot of "self service" moving company's that own their own trucks. I don't want to mention any...because I don't want to sound like a competitor of Movex just trying to sling mud. Do your homework.

3.I felt like I lied to people everyday...just to make a sale and save my job. "Movex provides, Ramps, a Dolly, Tie Down Straps, and Furniture Blankets." That's true..to a point. I knew alot of the haulers that were under contract with Movex and they had very nice equipment. I also heard 100's of story's about trucks showing up at a home with very little equipment or no equipment at all. How angry would you be if a truck showed up at your home and you had to run to Hom depot to purchase equipment that was promised to you by me? Again, Movex does not own or operate these trucks and has NO idea what will be showing up at your house. They have never seen or inspected any of the trucks that haul for them. I kew of a customer that had 26 foot hand painted old Uhual truck with a horse trailer being towed behind it show up at their house. Can you imagine that? The Movex rep said "53 feet of truck space" 'and that's what the customer got The customer and his wife had to sweep all the dirt out of the trailer before they loaded. Askyour Movex rep for those referrals, not just the great reviews they post on their website.

I hope this helps you make a decision when needing to hire a moving company. Movex is a wonderful place to work. I wouldn't let my worst enemy move their belonging with them though. I actually had a very very good friend move out of St. Petersburg Florida, back to where he grew up. He called me for information. I told him not to use us (Movex). A co-worker of mine moved a family member. Management wouldn't give the co-worker a deal on price....and her freaking truck didn't show up on time. Be aware!

In my opinion (after working in the industry for 3 years) the best way to move is real clear. Rent a truck. I know you will have full control and posession of your belongingsand YOU determine for real when the truck gets loaded and delivered at destination. That is piece of mind. It's much cheaper to rent a truck too. Especially that gas prices have finally dropped.

The Ex-Employee is Telling the Truth

AUTHOR: K. Grant - ()

POSTED: Saturday, April 27, 2013

Do Not Ever Use Movex! I am a consumer and the employee who shared this information is telling the absolute truth! I got Movex him fined by the government.

They subcontracted my move and the driver did not secure our car (new BMW) inside the 50 plus foot truck as required by law (FMCSA statue 393.100 and 393 part c). Our lose care slammed against all our furniture and house hold goods. The result
was extensive damage to everything we owned. Our car was scratched on all sides down to the primer. I filed a claim with the driver, who told me he would let his boss know. Gave me his number which was a fax machine. Later I learned he was the owner of his subcontracted moving company; AT Transport.

We fought with Stu and gang. Molly Voth was his accomplice. I did not get financial restitution, but did get Movex fined by the feds. They had to change their website to explain they do not own trucks too. (Stu showing a huge moving truck photos on your website and now actual owing trucks is dishonest.) It is called a bait and switch!

It is amazing this company is still in business. "Move" away from this company... "ex" them off your list!

A Different Review From A Ex-Employee

AUTHOR: Ex- Employee - (United States of America)

POSTED: Thursday, June 30, 2011

I also worked for Movex for over 3 years. Yes we had some problems with some employees, sometimes the trucks did breakdown. Did Movex care? Yes very much so, the company did everything they could to get another truck to the customer as soon as possible.

They never knowingly ever just let a customer slide through the cracks. Movex goes to great lengths to keep track of each and every customer to make sure their move goes as smooth as possible.

Movex Management is some of the best I have ever had the opportunity to work with. They worked late nights right there with us if a truck broke down  to re-route another truck to the customer.

The company really makes it a lot easier to move than if you choose another mover and if something goes wrong, either the customer or the ex-employee or more likely a competitor gets on this site and posts negative things when that is not the case at all.

This company and the people who work there really care. I also found it surprising that Movex charges more than the competitors? No a lot of time what I found is that with the competitors would give a lower price and then the cost would change on the day of the customer's move or at the end of the customer's move. Movex doesn't at least when I worked there change the pricing.

Again I am a ex-employee so it does not matter to me whether you choose them or not. But for the record they do care! They do not overcharge! And after working in the industry I would choose them for my move.

Happy Customer

AUTHOR: Kyle - (United States of America)

POSTED: Wednesday, April 27, 2011

We used Movex 10 years ago to move from California to Virginia.  We had a wonderful experience;  the driver was excellent and experienced, considerate and clear in communications.  All of our goods arrived in good condition.  Everything they promised was provided.  The truck was on time for the pick up and clear about the arrival.

I cannot imagine what this person is talking about.  I plan on using Movex again for my next move.

We did rent the entire semi for our move, but it was plainly explained to us that if we wanted to rent a partial truck we would have to be very flexible about departure and arrival dates.  We were willing work with those challenges because our savings was quite hefty.  I was probably more than 25% over any other method we could find.

I suspect that the writer of this complaint had a motive in his complaining.  It doesn't make sense to me that he would talk about how much he loved the company, name names and try to discredit them--and then disclose the name of the company they hired most often-- unless he had a plan.

I am not concerned about the Movex company having to charge 30% more than the driver would charge.  They handle the set up and do all the advertising and business functions for the transporters.  I am glad they exist and that they pass on the savings to me, the consumer.

Disaster with Movex

AUTHOR: Mrs Johnson - (United States of America)

POSTED: Tuesday, December 01, 2009

I am glad that I found this site, because I hope my post will help future customers to avoid what happened to me. I have been planning my relocation across the country for 2 months. I have read all reviews and did a lot of research about moving companies, but I did not see this web-site. I found only two companies that do self service moving: Movex and ABF. I chose Movex because of the slightly lower price and better reviews.

So, the day of my move has been set up. My husband and I bought airline tickets, hired people to load the Movex truck, not to mention we had to move out the next day from our apartment because our lease was up. Everything was set. We were happy and ready to go.

We started worrying when nobody called us the day prior the truck was supposed to show up. So, my husband called and just like the other posts say, we were told that the truck is broken. I was in shock! We had airline tickets; we had to be out of apartment the next day! What are we supposed to do with such a short notice. I was calling to Movex like crazy, I was told somebody would return my call, but nobody did, so I called again and again. I could not believe that such a big company does not have a back up plan in situations like that. Imagine yourself in a situation like that. We called the day when we had to move, the same answer: The truck is broken; nobody is going to show up at your house.

I had to hire another company that cost me much more because of such a short notice (we were lucky to find someone so quick), not to mention a nervous break down for my husband and me.  So, when I called to Movex and asked them to reimburse me for my extra expense, they said they are sorry and cant do anything about it. Well, Mr. Stuart Suddath what about your quote here in this site that you will reimburse any expanses that has been caused by your lousy company???

Nobody offered for me to fill out your fake survey at your web site.

I will post my opinion about Movex on every site that I can possibly find, so others will not get fooled and I will notify Better Business Bureau as well. The service they provide is unacceptable.

#4 UPDATE EX-employee responds

I also worked for Movex...

AUTHOR: Unknown - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, April 29, 2009

After reading the 2 posts from SW and Stu, I must say they both make very good points. I experienced some of what SW was talking about while working for Movex, but I also understand Stu's passion for Movex. If someone goes online and thrashes your childs name (even though your kid's a little s**t) you're going to do everthing you can to stick up for your child and protect his/her name. Sometimes we don't see (or want to see) how bad our kids (or our family owned company) truly are. I understand Stu for doing this. Movex is his baby.

I agree with alot of SW's points made but I don't want to dwell on them. The one I do want to talk about is:

"MOVEX IS A BROKER". Great point SW! That's the bottom line. They make alot of money, doing very little work. SW says that many times in their earlier post. We all hire brokers for helping us with different things. Real Estate, Mortgage, Travel, Financial, etc... But come on! Do you really need a company to schedule a moving truck for you? That's a little bit less "stressful" than dealing with house closings, title company's, and everything else that comes along with purchasing a new home. And I've yet to find a real estate agent charge 30% for their service. SW was 100% accurate about that margin, because I heard Movex management say the same thing many times. Get your moving quote from Movex and then call a company that owns their own fleet (ABF, Yellow, Broadway Express,etc..) You will understand what I'm talking about. They don't own or operate any trucks. They simply profit from company's that do own trucks. It really is a great thing the Suddath's have going. Like SW said, if they knew anything about customer service or how to retain good customers, they would probably be making alot more money. They (we) "pimp" out trucking company's like a street pimp would hustle a prostitute. Only this is legal." One of my co-workers said that to me one day at Movex, and I almost wet my pants laughing......because it's true!

The other thing that I read from Stu that is a little confusing to me is the 3500 to 4500 families Movex moves annually. REALLY?? Let's do the math. I'm going to split Stu's number down the middle for arguments sake. Let's say Movex moves 4,000 families a year. There are about 15 Relocation Specialists that work for Movex. That is an average of (4000/15) 266 moves booked, per Specialist, per calendar year? If we take those 266 moves booked and divide that by 12 months, we are talking about 22 booked moves per month per Specialist? There are 22 calendar selling days in a month. Stuart wants me, an ex-Movex employee to believe that his sales people are averaging 1 new move booked per day?? That's bull-s**t and a lie. Ask your Movex Rep how many moves they have booked this week. I mention this not only to show how delusional Stu is about his numbers but as a person who used to sell for Movex, I want to show how hard it was to make money with them.

I think my average booked move cost was $2500 per move. If I booked Stu's admitted 266 moves a year, I would be responsible for $665,000 in revenue for Movex. Well Stu's monthly sales quota's are decided on what time of year we are in. Winter months are less of a quota than summer months. That makes sense. If on average, the monthly sales quota's are $75,000 (which is low) that would be $900,000 Movex is expecting it's reps to generate a year. That's $235,000 higher than what Stu's post would suggest. Stu's 4,000 moves a year and $665,000 a rep is very much lower than the $900,000 annual quota they want it's reps to be at. Have fun trying to make money at Movex.

Good post SW. You gave me an open forum to vent my dis-pleasure with Movex as well. I don't recognize your initials either but I sure did enjoy reading your post.

Rebuttal from the Owner - Stu Suddath

AUTHOR: Stuart - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, April 06, 2009

I am glad that this person feels that this is a great place to work... I just don't believe that they actually have ever worked here (I, as the owner, do not recognize the intials from the "signature"). This could also be a report from a well-versed competitor trying to slander our good name... or a disgruntled employee (unfortunately, we have not been immune to the economy and have suffered some layoffs of some really outstanding employees who might be posting here in anger).

We have been in business for the last 15 years providing quality relocations to our customers. We are a medium-sized business and move anywhere from 3500 to 4500 customers a year (6500 when the economy is booming!). If you search this site for our name, you will find 4 complaints for us including this one (based in Tampa, the Miami complaints are not us and not related to us). This poster says that they recognize 3 of the names of complaintants on this site yet none of the other complaintants left their full name? The last complaint posted here was in August of 2006... nearly 3 years ago. Yet this poster is claiming that we have been savagely ripping of customers and providing lousy, overpriced service as a standard for the last 3 years that they have worked for us. If that were the case, I think we would see a lot more complaints posted here?

I would like to let the evidence speak for itself. We survey every customer for honest feedback on how we are doing. If you would like to read these surveys, click here http://www.movexsurveys.com .

You might also want to visit the Better Business Bureau. We are a member in good standing and are also part of their claim resolutions and arbitration program.

Enough with the commercial! Let me answer some of these allegations and hopefully any questions that you might have as a potential customer. I will answer them in the order that they are posted in the complaint.

1. MX is a broker and operates under the license number MC298267B. The poster fails to mention our sister company, Transportation Management Services, that does, in fact, own trucks and provide transportation services for MX customers (which leads me to believe the validity of this poster less and less). MX is also proud of its extensive fleet of independent owner-operators and small carriers that help us with the "harder to service" traffic lanes. This fleet was built over a great deal of time and is highly qualified and maintained. The major point that the poster mentions for point 1 is paying in advance and not having a definite truck scheduled. Well, sort of... You actually don't pay for your move until a truck is sitting in front of your house and you are loadng it! It does not get much more secure than that! Of course, we book hundreds of moves every month and as the loads come in, our load planners shuffle our available equipment to get each customer a truck on the day they select. We have a 97% to 99% success rate (depending on volume and time of year). For the other 3% to 1% that experience delays, we have a written guarantee in our contract that we will reimburse any verified expenses up to 10% of the cost of the move if we inconvenience you by missing your move date. We don't lie about it or deny that this does happen. How we deal with it is the difference between a good company and a bad one. We are a good one.

2. MX is the 600 pound gorilla of self-service moving. We handle a tremendous volume by moving company standards. This allows us to work for you as the consumer and get the best possible deal. It also allows us to keep our trucks fully-loaded... sharing the burden of the transportation costs with other customers on board. I would also recommend that you do your homework and check the prices of other movers. You as the consumer will get much higher pricing by going directly to them. If MX does not give you the lowest price, we will beat the price of any competitor offering the same services by $50. We are that confident that we are the best value for your dollar.

3. We do provide air-ride vans with furniture blankets, loading ramps, a dolly, and tie-down straps. The accusation made by the poster on this point is absurd. We could not stay in business if that type of shenanigans were going on. It is also interesting to note that our two largest competitors offer moving services on 28' "pup" trailers that are actually used to haul freight. They provide none of the equipment listed above and still have thriving businesses because consumers are smart and do know how to handle their furniture and load a truck to save some money.

In conclusion, I hope this rebuttal gives you the information that you need to make an educated decision about using MX. I recently moved my best friend and his wife to Tampa from Wisconsin using our services. They were very pleased. I also moved our CFO's neighbor on his referral...very pleased. I moved my mom and dad to South Carolina using our services... very pleased. I would not expect you to let me move your family if I would not move my own using the same service.

As the owner of MX, I am committed to having the best employees providing the best service at the lowest possible price. We get it right most of the time. And when we don't, we make sure that the customer comes first.

If you have any questions at all, I would personally be happy to speak with you.

Sincerely,
Stuart Suddath
