I rented a house to a man who failed to have the electric switched into his name. He ripped me off by not paying rent, gave me a bad check and damaged my property, the details of which I'll put in another report. I had Progress Energy turn the power off on 1/5/09.

On 1/7 my property manager reported that the power was still on. Thinking I was being a good citizen I called Progress Energy to report to them the possibility of the man, "stealing power". Their representative thanked me and told me he would file a report and advise me of the outcome. In the meantime I shouldn't be concerned with any charges as my account was closed and I would be receiving a FINAL BILL.

On 1/13 my PM reported the electric was off. I called Progress Energy again to have the power turned back on. The usual connect fee is $28.00. I was told that in addition to that I would have to pay $82.77 in investigative fees; $54.99 for the power used and $270.00 for a deposit for a total of $435.76 NOW, to get it turned on.

No amount of reasoning with them, pointing out that I was the owner who had reported the situation and I had never had to make a deposit on any of my rental properties or my home changed the decision. Apparently it means nothing to be an honest, good citizen. So, beware, owners of rental property, It does you no good to try to help the electric company in Central Florida.

I have no sympathy for you whatsoever Mrs. Landlord. I think next to utilities, a landlord is next in line when it comes to ripping people off. I am glad you got ripped, probably bad karma for all the times you rear-ended a good tenant. I have had nothing but trouble with every landlord i have rented from since 1990 and to say the least i have no sympathy for you people!
