I have had some horrible incidents happen to me in the last 4 years with Rent a Center. In July of 2006 I decided that I needed a computer so without having any credit, I went here.
I bought me a Compaq and I didn't even think about it, just went in faithfully every week and made my payment, at the time the store had good employees, very nice and friendly even if a bit pushy. I completely paid it off without even thinking what exactly did I pay for this computer anyway.
I continued to ignore that thought and went back in to check out what inventory they had in stock, I wanted a laptop.
I believe in 2008 I went in for a laptop and went home with an HP, it was ok but not what I was looking for so I took it back, they sent me home with a very nice looking Toshiba laptop with a very corrupted disk drive, so bad that it couldn't be fixed.
They then sent me home with a white one that I was not happy with at all, but by this time I had already made probably 8 months of payments (every week)!!!
When I took it back, they gave me a good one, a Sony Vaio.
They also restarted all of my payments!!! Not a penny did I get back from the year that I had already paid for because they could not get the laptop that I wanted to begin with.
I found out later that I had already paid $850 dollars on it and still had to pay $43 every week for 52 weeks, 52 WEEKS!!! Add that one up. They took the laptop back, were very rude to me throughout the whole ordeal, called sometimes 5 times a day, banging on the door, leaving voicemails, hateful messages, continually harassing you is pretty much the bottom line.
I am not sure how this company is getting away with all of this bad behavior but I think something needs to be done

So why it this their fault?

This guy states that he has weak credit - which is why he went to RAC to begin with.  Once he got there he made an agreement with them - it was a "bad deal" that was very much to RACs benefit and would result in him paying much more for a laptop.  He knowingly entered into this deal - seems to have understood it.  At some point he gets sick of crappy service from RAC and starts to add up what he has already paid for the laptop - then he just decides that because he has already paid $850 on it that he should no longer be bound by his agreement, stops paying, keeps the laptop, and views himself to be a victim when RAC attempts to enforce the agreement and reclaim their property?  Seriously?  RAC is designed to make money from people who can't get credit and want somthing right away that they can't buy otherwise.  At the end of the day the renter pays much more than the cost of the item - but that is the cost of getting the item right away when you can't pay cash for it and have credit problems.  Thats not really a rip off - I don't think it is a good deal for the renter - but thats up to the renter.  None of that means that the writer of the report can just decide that he has paid enough, is not going to pay anymore, and is going to keep the laptop.  Basically he is the one who tried to rip off RAC.  If you make an agreement keep it!  Also, use your head before you make an agreement!
