Here are rational/reasonable numbers and stats and heres how it works.....keep in mind these numbers ONLY apply if you pay cash/no financing. If you pay interest on either of these cars (Corolla or Prius), it will take even LONGER to recoup the loss (higher price) for/on the Prius.
So, let's compare 2008 Prius to Corolla (Toyotas)
gas mileage on Prius 44 mpg versus 32 mpg for Corolla (this combines highway and city average as nobody drives on only/strictly one or the other) take annual miles driven (avg. person is 14,000 miles times/x $4 avg. price per gal. of gas = total annual cost of gas) for Prius it's $1,400 and Corolla it's $1,866 for total annual cost of gas......gas savings of Prius per year is (difference between the two) = $466
then take the purchase price (difference between the two) = $4,500 of savings per year over Corolla
divide/$4,500 by $466 which = 9.7 years to break even for initial upcharge/higher purchase price of Prius.
Yes, that's YEARS to save for the additional purchase price, which get you nothing more than a backup camera versus the Corolla. The ride of the Prius is stiff, similar to Corolla. It has the same power (windows and locks, etc.) as Prius. The Corolla and Prius sizes are similar for cargo/luggage and seating capacity, except one is a hatchback. The only other difference is the smart key (which Corolla may have soon) and the tire monitoring/display for the Prius. Does that really matter? Hand-held tire gauges have been around for years. Don't you normally get them checked whenever your vehicle is in for service (oil change, etc.)? The Prius is much more complex and CANNOT be serviced at a regular garage, a distinct DISADVANTAGE. Even a normally simple tire change becomes cumbersome and complicated due to the tire monitoring system and special valve/stem on the Prius. Unless you go to the higher-numbered packages to get navigation system, etc., the Prius does not have any true advantages. You can also upgrade Corollas to get these options; hence making it a non-advantage. So, I'm beginning to wonder, why would anybody buy a Prius? I'm surprised hundreds of other people aren't already doing the same thing. If you're smart, you'll stay away from ANY dealership that plays these types of games with numbers, savings, etc.! I've also heard that some dealerships are selling these cars OVER/above sticker price. Has people simply lost their minds? Why would anyone pay more than MSRP for ANY/a car? It's just ridiculous. I'm NOT making fun of anybody, especially Prius owners. I'm just saying this car/Prius is not a limited edition or some other "collectible" car. Come on, people should do their research and buy a different car. Had I to do it all over again, I would give my money to an American car company, or at least to one that treats me with respect and dignity! The advantage we have as Americans is that we do NOT have to buy merchandise from degrading companies like Toyota/dealerships. Now, wouldn't it be nice if we had the same option for gas? You can drive down the road to save a couple cents, but don't go too far, because then you've wasted the money by driving. It's all a con. It's sad, and a sorry statement for us a people that we have businesses like this at all. It's a shame we can't make them go out of business or at least CHANGE the way they do business!
One other thing, for those of you that are green-minded regarding carbon emissions and all that stuff.....do you have any idea how difficult and unsafe the Prius batteries are regarding disposal? They are far worse than a regular battery as it relates to its impact on our earth/planet. Like nuclear power, the Prius/hybrid will never be truly green for they hide their biggest problem. How can something be truly green if its disposal causes more long-term issues than the problem they seek to avert?
I think I heard Toyota lobbied hard to have the a Bill passed as opposed to a more eco-friendly bill that was proposed earlier in the year that called for higher mpg standards. If they are so green and are luring all of the enviro-conscious consumers on the basis that they are green, then why lobby against a better MPG Bill while trying to state they are doing something positive by backing an alternative "H-T Bill?" This makes no sense, and neither does buying a Prius until they lower the price and control/monitor their dealerships!

The use of the paragraphs was a good start.

But I could tell by the first sentence it would be yet another long-winded, content free post.

Not Friendly or French

AUTHOR: Ladydianade - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, July 27, 2008

Well, I wouldn't want to disappoint a European countryman. So, now you have paragraphs. Do you feel better? I sure hope so, especially since you turned what started out as a useful and/or informational posting into a personal attack. You're sick, period. If you read all of this, great. If not, like I really give a darn. Just out of curiosity, what drives a person like you to verbally (written actually) attack another human being over an internet posting?

The econobox, Prius, Civic, and whatever else you want to throw into this category have indeed become the cool or popular cars. However, the Prius, and similar hybrids, are destroying the earth due to issues related to battery disposal. Also, if current buyers think they are saving money, how about when they have to replace that expensive battery?

As it relates to emissions, does anyone really believe that because the engine cuts off when at a full stop, or during slow idle/speeds, that it will truly stop global warming? So, save the money on this car. Please invest in true hybrid technology and alternative energy sources instead. Better yet, give your money to a worthy charity.

Thus, if someone really must by this car simply to go with the trend, I doubt they are the type of people that are actually doing it to help the Mother Earth. Those purchasers that are paying astronomical prices for these cars are feeding into what I consider to be nothing more than sheer greed.

Lastly, Toyota's pride and joy customer satisfaction index (CSI) and their wonderful customer relations department did absolutely nothing to help me. Although, Toyota claims to care about all of its special consumers. Obviously, just another lie. Toyota should do something about its dealerships, and better yet, people should take information like this and make a good decision, preferably one that helps American car manufacturers. Yes, these dealerships train their staff how to spot a sucker or someone with money to spare, so do we really stand/have a chance without a forum like this to report ripoffs, fraud, deceit and the like?

By the way, a free market is a market in which prices of goods and services are arranged completely by the mutual consent of sellers and buyers. By definition, in a free market environment, buyers and sellers do not coerce or mislead each other nor are they coerced by a third party. Therefore, over-inflating the price, lying about gas mileage and playing switch-a-roo on financing terms is not a fee market. That's just for clarification in case Friendly Help was confused. This is a forum for posting how you were swindled, ripped off, cheated, etc. This is not a forum to attack other people for unjustifiable reasons. I got ripped off. I was lied to by the salesperson, dealership and financing department. I did my research, but fell into some of the same traps as many of the most educated Americans that live here.

Perhaps Klerke', you feel that people in the USA are less intelligent that you Europeans. Finally, as it relates to the English language, as you called it, which is not what a paragraph is, rather, it is a format and the general American practice is to indicate new paragraphs by indenting the first line, with blank lines between paragraphs, while business writing uses blank lines and no indent. For educational papers, indents and no blank lines are preferred and most published books use a device to separate certain paragraphs further when there is a change of scene or time. Some people are just idiots, and really should learn the English language; Klerke', so stick to French!!

Dear Ladydianade: Neither Toyota, nor any other manufacturer, can control car dealers

AUTHOR: Friendly Help - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, July 13, 2008

If you have heartburn with this, take it up with the US Congress, because that august body made the car manufacturer - car dealer rules in the first place.

The dealer only has to move product & have the requisite facilities to support product sales and meet their sales quotas.

Usually Lexus dealers present themselves in a kinder manner than do Toyota dealers, but you pay for it.

Some dealers are a PITA and others are quite nice. I bought from a local dealer with a good reputation.

Numerous dealers trying to make extra money on a hot-selling car IS the free market. These people would not have the money required to open a significant dealership if they were stupid. They know what motivates people to buy, and people who WILL buy are their only interest. And they do know how to read the people who walk through their doors.

People are nutsy over gas mileage now. The same thing happened c. 1973. Deja Vu all over again.

One chap was interviewed on NPR two days ago. He bought a Caddy Escalade for $70K last year when his gas cost $3.20 a gallon. Now his gas costs $4.20 a gallon and he has the hots to dump the Escalade for an econobox. Trade value offered for the Escalade was $31,000. An economist argued that dumping the Escalade for a $39K loss in one year because gas now cost $1.00 more a gallon than when the vehicle was originally bought was simply nuts. But the Esclade owner WAS thinking about doing just that. This is also the free market.

I never 'rode around' in a gas hog SUV so I have no issues. I use an F150 4x4 only 200 miles/month for my property cleanup jobs, pickup jobs & towing the boat.

I think most people bought gas-hog cars, SUV's, and P/U trucks to ride around in simply because they saw their neighbors driving these vehicles and it looked so cool. Now econobox cars and hybrids look cool. Most people do very little thinking or financial justification for the vehicles they drive, they just go with the flow. Right now the flow is pretty strong toward econobox vehicles and hybrids. This, again, is also the free market. Live with it.

for Klerke' in France

AUTHOR: Ladydianade - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, July 12, 2008

Ok, I'm not going to take pot shots at France. However, Klerke', did you actually read the FULL article BEFORE you posted a response?
Most importantly, Klerke', I said that Toyota doesn't police it's dealerships, which is shameful, even after you go directly to Toyota's customer care and complain.
Hence, why buy a car from a manufacturer that doesn't give a d**n about the consumer? Duh!
Also, I NEVER said Toyota makes ALL bad cars and/or that they don't last.
My point of the posting was that not only are the Prius cars overpriced, but the batteries and related components are killing our precious earth.
Good grief. Posting mean-spirited, comments or replies are just unnecssary.
Apparently, the Prius mileage, battery disposal, cost, etc., doesn't seem to phase some people. I guess that's what makes us indivduals, but I still encourage you to do research before you attempt to buy a Prius.
Maybe you will be one of the lucky few who don't get ripped off. Good luck!
My case is supported by the facts. If you don't want to believe me, I really don't care.
Maybe you had some good experiences. I did too many years ago, and have owned other Toyotas.
However, the dealership I dealt with lied to me, pretended the car got better mileage than was documented on the sticker, played some hokey financing games, and tried to rip me off on my trade in, as well as overcharged me for the Prius.
No less than 6 other dealerships are attempting to do, or doing, the same thing. I checked into it. That's NOT a free market, that's deceit and a rip off, which is what this site is for, after all.
Some of you are really scaring me. I'm just trying to help you save the environment and some money too.
What's wrong with that? I didn't say you can't buy a stupid Prius if you have your heart set on it.
If, after all of this, along with the battery disposal and its environmental impact, and the cost to replace same, along with poor Karl's boisterous warnings, you don't consider buying something other than a Prius, well, that's just dumb!
P.S. God bless you Karl, but you really do need to lighten up. Your crusade, while seemingly noble, is a bit over the top, and perhaps that's an understatement. If you lighten up, maybe people will take you more seriously. Go ahead, try it, what have you got to lose? People are already verbally attacking you, which is also an understatement.

I too believe that 'Stick' morphed into Karl. An indiviual who would never let fact or objectivity get in the way of his absurd rants as a 'Consumer Advocate'.

There are complaints regarding the Toyota Prius when going up hills covered with snow, or even gravel. It seems as though the Prius was not designed to go up hills with snow, or even loose gravel. This could pose a very serious problem for many people. Especially at night when it's hard to see!!!!!!!!!!

Also, you can go to www.9news.com and type in the name ORNELAS and watch the undercover video about Car Dealers and you'll see me there!! You can also go to businessweek.com and when you are at the Home Page simply click on 'In Your Face' and go to page 9. I'm the 2nd face there!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not all about the cost

AUTHOR: Klerke' Kent - (France)

POSTED: Friday, July 04, 2008

Manufacturers do not claim that you will save money for the average driver buying a hybrid over the standard economy vehicle, such as Civic vs Civic Hybrid vs FIT, or Corolla vs Prius. You do need to drive a lot of miles ro recoup your additional costs of the Hybrid.

But that's not what its all about. Many people who purchase the hybrids do it to be part of the solution to improving air quality and reducing emissions.

So please stop your silly whining.

Relax Karl

AUTHOR: Cat - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, July 04, 2008

Karl, take a pill and don't short circuit ok? Geesh. We all have heard enough about your rants on Toyota. No, for the record I do not drive one. They do not make a SUV that I can slip into easily. They are either too small and I would have to bend down to get into, which I can not do or I would have to get a step ladder to get into the other ones. Toyota cut out their leg space several years ago, so they lost me as a buyer as my knees do not bend enough to drive one. I have had both knees replaced many years ago due to RA.

I do about 60k miles a yr in my Chevrolet Equinox so I have to have a comfy car to drive in. I can slide in it and not have to bend down or climb up to get into it. Everyone has their own reasons as to why they buy their own cars. If they choose to buy an over priced Prius, hey that is their right. If most buyers are smart they will do their own research, check out the prices, how fast it depreciates and they will not finance it.

I actually had a Rodeo for years, put almost 500k miles on it and when it died they had stopped making them. So that is why in '06 I moved on to the Equinox. My husband put 450,000 miles on his Ford Escort and they stopped making them. He actually had two of them and had put about the same amount of miles on his first one. So the majority of us out here do our research on what we buy for our own needs.

So, relax, and let everyone do their own research and remember they have a brain ! Not everyone fits in every car, some love Toyota's , some love Ford's and some may not care. At least we are allowed to have our own opinions and that my friend is what freedom is all ABOUT today!

Hey, Anonymous of Texas, Karl probably sells Chrysler products

AUTHOR: Friendly Help - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, July 04, 2008

Anonymous, Anywhere, Texas:

You change your oil every 3000 miles? That is generating a LOT of used oil!

Are you using mineral oil?

I used mineral oil until 1981, when I had noticed that [expensive] mineral oil would turn black and also cause lifter noise after only 3000 miles service in my 1981 Buick. I researched my problem and settled on Mobil-1.

I started the Mobil-1 when the Buick had 6000 miles on it, and three (3) Mobil-1 oilchanges were required to reach GM's recommended oil change interval of 7500 miles.

The first M-1 change lasted 3000 miles, the second M-1 change lasted 4500 miles, and finally the third M-1 change lasted the entire recommended 7500 miles because the engine was still quiet at startup and the oil color was only a dark honey.

Now you can figure the cost/mile for your situation, but compared to the cost/mile for gasoline, oil changes are admittedly cheap. But engine wear is not cheap- it causes reduced gasoline mpg. And engine wear mostly occurs as a function of how long is required for the engine's oil to form the required lubricating boundry layer films at startup, and this is where real synthetics truely shine.

Let's see
Mineral Oil at $1.5 qt x 5 qts = $7.50
Oil filter $6
Total = $13.59
For 3000 miles, cost/mile = $13.50/3000 = $0.005

Mobil-1 5-Qt jug 5W-30, 0W-30 etc. at Wally*World = $23.00
Filter = $6
Total = $29.00
Cost/mile = $29.00/7500 = $0.004 [Well, this IS STILL a lot less bother!]

Gasoline at $3.80 gal

$3.80/23 = $0.165
$3.80/30 = $0.127
$3.80/35 = $0.109
$3.80/40 = $0.095

I changed the Mobil-1 used in our 1991 Camry every 7500 miles, and we used that car for 323,000 miles whereupon it needed a fourth repair, so I traded it in.

Beyond tires & brake pads, the only parts I ever had to replace in/on our 1991 Camry were:

Alternator, 270,000 miles
Starter, 300,000 miles
Waterpump, 316,000 miles
Engine miss, 323,000 miles. This is where I gave up. [Body damage, rust, and a lack of airbags helped sway the decision.]

It is cheaper for Toyota to pay a few Lawsuits due to DEATHS from FAULTY AIRBAGS than it is to FIX THE PROBLEMS and do a RECALL, wouldn't you agree??

Imagine if Toyota had to do a recall on ALL Toyotas in the past 10 or so years!! It could cost HUNDREDS of MILLIONS, and even BILLIONS of dollars, correct? Especially if they had to REPLACE all of the DEFECTIVE parts that they KNOWINGLY installed, right? Google this- SUIT: DEFECT REPORTS ALTERED TOYOTA PLANT and read the 'Whistleblower Lawsuit' for proof!!!

It's CHEAPER for Toyota to pay out a few Lawsuits to people's families who might have a loved one DIE as a result of DEFECTIVE safety equipment than it is to FIX THE PROBLEMS, right?? ( A lawyer told me this!!!!!!)

OMG! Is Karl really a "Pain in the ***" ? Sheesh! Talk about lubrication problems....

POSTED: Wednesday, July 02, 2008

We little ole Toyota owners, by comparison, ain't go no lubrication problems.... at least none that a little Mobil-1 or AMSOIL won't fix.

I am trying the $17/each AMSOIL E^3 oil filter on our big block speedboat for the first time. Heck, when you put 7 quarts of $6/qt oil into an engine, anything looks reasonable.

Mebbe I should try an AMSOIL E^3 oil filter on our Toy if they look to be worth the cost.... but right now the dealer charges me $14 to change the oil I supply and install their Toy oil filter while we wait 30 minutes. This is a real quandry.....

Seriously, no one's life is in danger based on any of your conspiracy theories. There are many, many happy Toyota owners on the rode. One job I worked at we ran the truck to 280,000 miles without an issue outside of regular maintenance - you know - the type that prevents sludge in your engine. Oh wait, you don't know as you don't do any and blame the manufacturer. Just because people can't drive properly doesn't mean a vehicle is unsafe. Ever since you and charles broke up, you've both been posting more and more bullshit. Just move on to another guy already. None of anything you ever post has anything remotely to do with the complaint it is posted in. If you have such an iron clad issue, the take them to court.

NO 'Hatred', JUST FACTS- YOUR LIFE COULD BE IN DANGER IF...

You have a TOYOTA!!!

FACT: Google this- ENGINE SLUDGE, and go to the consumeraffairs website about Toyota engine problems and then click on 'AIRBAGS' when you are there and read them.

FACT: Google this- SUIT: DEFECT REPORTS ALTERED TOYOTA PLANT and read the 'Whistleblower' Lawsuit regarding 'defect reports' that were ALTERED at a Toyota Plant in California. YOUR LIFE COULD BE IN DANGER!!

FACT: Google this- YOUTUBE TOYOTA SEQUOIA DEFECT and watch the video of a Sequoia that flipped over on I-95. YOUR LIFE COULD BE IN DANGER!!

FACT: Google this- BALTIMORE SETTLEMENT CALIFORNIA TOYOTA and read how Toyota targetted African Americans & Hispanics due to their skin color!! Perhaps Toyota shared their techniques with the Mortgage Lenders in America and told them to target WHITE PEOPLE too, wouldn't you agree?!!!

FACT: Google this- SEXUAL HARASSMENT TOYOTA and read how a NY Toyota executive compared his assistant to a box of 'cereal'. I believe he referred to her as 'TASTY'!!!

Toyota is a corporation that is based on FRAUD, CORRUPTION, DECEPTION, MANIPULATION, GREED, LIES & the CONSTANT PURSUIT TO FINANCIALLY INJURE THE INNOCENT, in my opinion. And guess what? I CAN PROVE IT WITH HARD EVIDENCE from WITHIN TOYOTA CORPORATION!!!!

Google this- SLUDGE POEM, and read it! Toyota's CEO, Jim Press, quit his position exactly two weeks after SLUDGE POEM was posted on 8-23-2007. He announced his resignation on 9-6-2007, and went to Chrysler. By the way, Chrysler's sales dropped 35.9% in the last quarter compared to the same time last year!! WHY? POOR MANAGEMENT!! That's WHY!!!!

Google this- BUSINESSWEEK.COM and click on the 'In Your Face' section at BusinessWeek's Home Page, and go to pPage 9. There's a Karl there. Guess what?

I'm- IN YOUR FACE!!!!

ONE FINAL FACT. Toyota's sales declined 21% last quarter!! FACT: A quote from a Harvard Business Professor- "If annual sales are going down, so should the stock.' end quote. FACT: Toyota's stock is GOING DOWN!!!!!!!Soon it will be below $85 per share!!!! I'll GOOGLE there!!!!

POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!

THE COLLAPSE OF THE U.S. ECONOMY HAS BEEN TRIGGERED!!!

WHY? Because, for the most part, it is based on these- LIES, DECEPTION, MANIPULATION, FRAUD, GREED, CORRUPTION & the CONSTANT PURSUIT TO FINANCIALLY INJURE THE INNOCENT!

What drives Karl's "Toyota Hatred", for heavens sake? Go buy a Honda and relax, Karl!

You seem irrational, Karl!

OK, Ladydianade, so the Prius is not the answer to mankinds' driving dilemmas! What else is new?

And those Prius batteries must, at some time, reach the end of their life and be replaced. The Prius batteries are proprietary, so you can only buy them from your friendly Toyota dealer and at a price you may not like. [Maybe Ladydianade thinks "her" present Prius needs new batteries so "she" would rather buy a new Prius?] So are we now reading an attempt to cool the overheated Prius market? Hey, go buy a new Corolla or Civic and save your energy.

The law of diminishing returns would apply to the question of paying a premium for a 44 mpg Prius instead of paying less for a 32 mpg Corolla. And when the payback goes beyond 3 or 4 years, interest or investment opportunity costs must be included. Which means you can increase the payback time by maybe a year.

Now we use a 3.5L V6 Camry that gets 23 mpg around town, and we put 660 miles/month on it. At $3.80/gal (here) that is $109/month or $1309/year.

Compare our $1309 a year to Ladydianade's total annual cost of gas numbers:
for Prius it's $1,400 and
for Corolla it's $1,866

So our large, high-powered, smooth-riding V6 Camy costs even less! :))

Hey, Karl, go buy yourself a 1997 to 2003 Ford F150 and enjoy a really safe and satisfying vehicle. And don't sweat the gas mileage! Oh, and you can look up the NHTSA crash test pictures using a simple web search..... Enjoy!

WARNING!!! URGENT STAT: YOUR LIFE COULD BE IN DANGER BECAUSE...

AUTHOR: Karl - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, July 01, 2008

There are Toyotas that are being reported whose AIRBAGS are NOT DEPLOYING when in accidents!

URGENT!!! You must Google this-

ENGINE SLUDGE and go to the consumeraffairs website regarding Toyota engine complaints and then click on 'Airbags' when you are there and read ALL OF THEM!!! YOUR LIFE COULD BE IN DANGER!!!!

Possible CONSPIRACY by Toyota, and the Legal System in the USA, along with the National News Media, to COVER-UP vital information regarding DEFECTIVE AIRBAGS & other 'safety' DEFECTS like seat-belts, etc.!!!!!!

ALERT!!!! Google this-

SUIT: DEFECT REPORTS ALTERED TOYOTA PLANT and read it!!! Katy Cameron 'Blew The Whistle' and told the TRUTH!!! WHY ISN'T THE National Media ALERTING ALL Toyota owners???

If Brtittany Spears, or Nicole Richie, or Paris Hilton were in an accident in a Toyota and the AIRBAGS did not deploy, WE KNOW that it would be WORLDWIDE NEWS, correct???

Aren't innocent American's lives worth anything???? Apparently NOT!!!!

BOYCOTT NBC & CBS National News!!! Dateline NBC & 60 Minutes have all of this info, and MORE!!!!

A National CONSPIRACY is taking place, in my opinion!!!!

Google this- BALTIMORE SETTLEMENT CALIFORNIA TOYOTA and read how Toyota TARGETS people of different SKIN COLOR!! NBC & CBS know this too!!!!

Google this- SEXUAL HARASSMENT TOYOTA and read how Toyota TARGETS WOMEN!!!! NBC & CBS know this too!!!!!

Google this- YOUTUBE TOYOTA SEQUOIA DEFECT and watch the video of a Sequoia that flipped over on I-95.

Google this- SINGH V TOYOTA and read how an innocent man burned to death in his Toyota Corolla!!!!!! NBC & CBS know this too!!!!!

God bless all the innocent people in the USA & around the world whose lives COULD BE IN DANGER because of DEFECT REPORTS THAT WERE ALTERED, according to a TRUE American hero- Katy Cameron!!!!

SPREAD ALL OF THIS AROUND THE WEB!!!!!
