The other day my boyfriend and I went to jackson and hewitt to get our taxes done, not knowing we were going to be completely ripped off! We just had a baby and since we are not married we did not who it would benefit better claiming our daughter. JH had never given us any rates up front on how much it would cost us to get our taxes done by them, my boyfriend had gotten his done a few years ago there and it was only $50.
When they finished they told us it was going to be $260 for mine and $410 for my boyfriend. I didn't realize that is a lot and I thought because they already did everything that was it. Their motto " Get every dollar you deserve" is a huge lie. They take your hard earned money! I will never go back to this company again!

Any office with Jackson Hewitt can give you a fee estimate up front. They will ask you about 15-20 questions, and based on your answers (how many W-2s, are you married, do you have children, is your income over $xxx, etc), they can give you a range of what your fee will be BEFORE you get your taxes done.
Also, tax offices charge the most during their peak season which is late January and early February when they are the busiest during certain times. They keep their offices staffed to the max to minimize customer wait time. This increases the payroll costs, so fees are increased during this period. If you can wait until the end of February or beginning of March, you will pay less in tax prep fees.
