Okay, my father signed up for the cancer policy through Aflac several years before his diagnosis of lung cancer in August of 2007. After having his lung removed, he was no longer able to work and begain to file claims on his policy with Aflac. While he was going through hell, Aflac was great. His rep was very nice, I spoke with him several times, and informed my dad that he would take care of everything, and he did. All of the money he was promised arrived on time and my dad was able to pay his bills, and live.

Well, my dad was in and out of the hospital for several months and finally went in permanently after his lung was punctured being place on a respirator. So, while my dad was alive I took care of his Aflac filings, so that we could pay his medical bills, his insurance was canceled, and he was paid what was agreed upon.

However, once my dad passed away in March of 08' I was told that I would receive his last payment that was filed before he died. His rep was very kind, and said that he would make sure it was taken care of. Well, that did not happen. I was given the run around for about a month, and then once I did receive his payment, it was half. Now, it was not my money, but I was left to clean up his medical bills and it was already a difficult time. My wife and I called the rep and this time he was very short, and would not return our calls. Our last conversation was basically him saying well that's all you get and stop calling. So, we left it at that and have not contacted him again. However, we get medical bills every day and its a struggle to keep up.

Therefore, if you plan to buy Aflac, I would say do it... Just don't plan on dieing...

A bit confused..

AUTHOR: Robin - North Smithfield (U.S.A.)

I'm so sorry to hear that you lost your father. The title of your posts confused me, thought. The Cancer Plan he purchased is NOT life insurance; it pays you while you are alive and being treated for cancer. If you read through his policy, it clearly states the exact dollar amount Aflac pays for every procedure and treatment. If you feel you received less than you were entitled to, then you need to contact your agent again and ask for the phone number of HIS District or Regional Coordinator. Then call them. I've been with Aflac a long time, and despite the moaning and groaning I hear from people on boards like this, I have NEVER seen Aflac deny a legitimate claim. NEVER. What happens is that people don't read their policies, or they misundestand what their agent tells them, or they receive poor customerservice. For that last one, there is no excuse, and I apologize to you that your Aflac rep was "short" with you. That is no way to treat a customer, or the family member of a customer. Please follow through; this is a good company, I've handled many cancer claims and Aflac has always done the right thing. Good Luck.

Your father should have bought Life Insurace

AUTHOR: Janis - Amherst (U.S.A.)

First, my heartfelt condolences on the passing of your father. It is never easy to lose a loved one.

That being said, however, I do not understand this complaint at all. The Cancer Plan is for people who are living, and being treated for Cancer.

The title of your post gives you the answer. Your father should have had LIFE INSURANCE.

I'm sorry you were treated poorly by the agent, but every single payment is outlined in detail in his policy. And it is the responsibility of the policyholder to read it all-front to back, so that they can understand what they purchased.

Aflac does not deceive people; but being in the insurance industry for almost 20 years, I can tell you that 99% of buyers don't read their policies. Then when a payment is different from what they 'think' it should be, they start calling the company a sham, or of "conning policyholders."

Simply not true. I have worked with many, many companies over the years, and IMO, Aflac is one of the best. Their policies are easy to read, and I have never ONCE seen them deny a legitimate claim.

What I have seen, however, is very selfish and poor behavior on the part of policyholders. (I'm not directing this at you, please understand.) People do not grasp the concept of insurance.

Example: I constantly get asked, "well why do I have to buy the Cancer Policy now? Why can't I wait UNTIL I GET cancer, and then I'll buy the policy."

Where do you think the money comes from to pay out claims? I'm always astonished that your average citizen doesn't understand this simple concept. People want to buy a $5/week policy, pay once, and then get thousands and thousands of dollars for an illness they KNEW they had when they bought the plan. Insurance companies would go out of business if they worked this way.

I actually had a client of mine who took out a 30 year term life insurance policy, and after four years, she cancelled it, because "it wasn't doing anything for her." (those were her exact words.) Unbelievable. Life insurance is for helping your family deal with the bills you leave behind when you die, as well as final expenses. It's not something for YOU; it's for the people who love you.

In any case, I'm glad to hear that your father was able to pay his bills and maintain his finances while he was ill. I can understand completely how you must feel right now; the cost of getting sick goes far beyond major medical insurance, like Blue Cross. For anyone reading this, please take a moment and make an informed decision, should your employer offer you Aflac at work. Actually, some of their plans can be purchased directly, but it costs more than if it's done in a group (called sharing the risk.)

I have the Cancer Plan; I've witnessed many, many friends and family deal with cancer and it is one expensive illness. My company doesn't offer Aflac, but I bought the Cancer plan on my own. If I never use, it, I won't be complaining. But at least I know that, God forbid, I am diagnosed with cancer, I won't end up filing bankruptcy.

Best of luck to you.

AFLAC Delivered

AUTHOR: Benefit Boy - Miami (United States of America)

Sorry to hear about your dad.  Looks like AFLAC did what they said.  The Cancer policy pays for ongoing treatment but does not have a death benefit.

Therefore make sure you have Life Insurance.
