I was an independent Aflac agent from June 2007 to December 2007. I quit because I found it nearly impossible to sell policies. There were countless number of agents in my area (Beaverton Oregon) and the same businesses would be called over and over again.

I did make a few sales and transferred all companies and individuals to my manager and also left her all the companies which were possibly sales. I did not ask for anything more from the company. I just gave it all to my manager.

Today, April 2009, (1 1/2 years after quitting the company) I received a letter from Andrew T. Robinson stating, "This is a notification regarding your debit balance owed to Aflac in the amount of $1,465.77. The balance is due to chargeback's, personal insurance deductions, or license fees etc." I am suppose to pay them this huge amount of money within in 10 days.

First of all I do not have that kind of money and second, and even more important, I do not feel I owe them this money. When I left Aflac I had paid all my bills with them. If the accounts went belly up, it is my managers responsibility - not mine. There is no way that I feel that I owe Aflac one dime.

How do I get rid of this obvious Rip Off?

Thank you

AFLAC Managers are apparently liars

AUTHOR: RC - Surprise (U.S.A.)

First I would ask for a detailed listing of the chargebacks in question. I would then see if the manager you turned everything over to is still working with AFLAC and see if he would be willing to go over all of the items with you. Especially since the accounts were turned over to him/her.

I had the same experience with AFLAC here in Peoria, AZ that you did, but I found out about all of the lies I was told in my interview in the first week. I first specifically asked the training manager how often the list of zip codes was handed out to agents for them to canvas and his response was every six weeks. I didn't want to be one of the "hounds" bothering businesses daily. I later did the math and realized that there are approximately 250 agents in the Phoenix area going after businesses in 125 zip codes. I was also told that AFLAC does not ask it's new agents for a list of friends and family to contact, yet that was one of the first things asked of me. It was stated that I would have a trainer with me every day for the first 30 - 60 days, depending on how comfortable I felt. I asked about the qualifications of the trainers and was told they had to go through an extensive training before they are approved. Well, first of all my trainer was in the negative numbers and was more concerned with getting back in the positive sales figures. I was handed a list of businesses in the assigned zip codes, told how to go about "cleaning the list" and told to just start calling using the set scripts. As I sat around trying to make the calls I got to listen to agents bad mouth customers in the background the entire time. My trainer spent one day showing me how to berate prospective customers and had me start to go out on my own after. So much for having someone with you every day. After the constant complaints of being the fifth person there that week and the frustration of putting my foot in my mouth I too quit. Obviously the managers tell you what you want to hear to get a warm body in the streets for them.

Hopefully the company and your ex-manager will have the decency to go over your chargebacks and realize that 18 months is a bit long to wait before they try to go after you. Best of luck.

Maybe this will help...

AUTHOR: Dave - Portland (U.S.A.)

Hi. I can understand your concern. I am not an employee of Aflac, I am also a commissioned associate. I have been with Aflac for almost ten years and still remember how hard it was getting started. In regard to the chargebacks, you can call Aflac accounting and get a breakdown showing which policies were affected. Your manager may or may not have explained how "we" get paid as commissioned associates. When you sell a policy, you are paid a commission based on the type of policy and the annual premium. If you chose to receive advance commissions (most do) you are advanced a large percentage of your commission up front. Your commission being based on the annual total of each individual policy sold. If you are selling to groups, this is often paid before Aflac has collected any premiums. Your advance is basically a good faith loan from Aflac, otherwise you could select to be paid "as earned" which puts you 1-2 months away from a pay check. So, if you sell a policy and the policyholder cancels within first year, you will be responsible to pay back any commission you were paid. This is a chargeback. If you had sold insurance as an Aflac associate and were paid advance commissions and then quit selling Aflac, you are still responsible to pay any chargebacks because you wre already paid commissions. If you had turned accounts and/or policies to another associate, manager, etc, they are not paid sales commissions on policies you sold. They are not resonsible to pay back commissions that were paid to you. They are only paid commissions on new policies. Commissions are paid for selling and servicing the policy sold. This protects the consumer and Aflac, and creates a resonsibility for the Aflac associate to work hard to keep business on the books. Aflac generates a monthly report for each associate available for viewing on the Aflac associate website. These reports track your commissions including chargebacks. They also track your commissions. Even though you left Aflac and transferred your accounts and policies, if they did not cancel you would still have been paid commissions after you left. The good news is you never have to pay back more than you were paid so you are also protected. This way no one gets ripped-off. No you, not Aflac, and not the policyholder. Personally, I have some chargebacks every month as most associates probably do also. Its just part of the business. I just have to make sure that my new sales are more than my chargebacks. I have worked with several insurance companies that pay commissions and most work this same way if they are even willing to advance commissions as Aflac does.

ON A DIFFERENT NOTE

AUTHOR: Laurie - Haslet (U.S.A.)

Recently laid off and now self-employed.

I went to the AFLAC website to look at individual policy options to make sure I am covered should I not be able to work.

Per the website - I identified the policies I was interested in learning more about (not purchasing at the time) and requested 2 times to have the basic policy info MAILED to me for review.

The first request in Feb was completely ignored.

They do not post this information on their website so I wanted it mailed to me.

Last week I resubmitted the request for info to be MAILED to me. 2 days later I received an email from one of their reps - trying to give me a qoute!

Quote on what? I had not received the MAILED info yet and was not ready to even discuss a quote.

I responded to that email that I was not ready to discuss a quote as I have not received the info yet.

I again stated I wanted the basic policy info MAILED to me for review first. IF and when I was interested in pursuing this I would contact her. I also told her I would not do business with any one or company that refuses to send written documentation for review first.

Its been over a week now since I resubmitted the request and still nothing in the mail!!

I'm currently looking at other disability insurance options - since AFLAC is not interested in new accounts..

I feel your pain...

AUTHOR: Anonymous - (USA)

I was an independent agent for Aflac as well.  I didn't write one policy the entire time I was there.  I tried my best to get appointments and sell policies, but the market was so inundated with Aflac agents it made it nearly impossible to find someone that would give me the time of day.  One day while I was in the office my District Manager informed me that she had switched some accounts over to my name and that I should be receiving money in my bank account soon, if I hadn't already.  She said that she wanted to help me out and give me a little something to help out.  It wasn't much, somewhere around $40 or so on 2 or 3 occasions, but it was money and I needed it so I didn't care.  After about 3 or 4 months of trying I finally gave up and decided to focus on finding a regular 9-5 job.  My former boss said that I owed her nothing and wished me the best of luck.

Fast forward to a few months later...I may not owe her anything, but Aflac seems to think that I owe them just over $200 for chargebacks on the accounts that "used to be mine."  How can that be?  They weren't even mine to begin with, they were switched over to my name without me even knowing it, and I didn't even make as much as they are trying to charge me back.  I called the 800 number for reps and was basically told that they wouldn't charge me more than what I had earned.  I told them the whole story and that in order to pay them the money that they feel they are owed it would take every dime I received and then some.  The person on the other end of the line didn't seem to care.  They didn't offer to look into it or anything.  They just repeated back to me what had already been said.

Can they really do this to me?  Can they really force me to pay chargebacks on accounts that I was the temporary owner of?  It's not like I opened these accounts and received the initial commission or anything.  I just got a few bucks thrown my way and that is it.  The accounts went right back from whence they came as soon as I left.

Any ideas on what I should do or how to handle this?

Thanks.
