On Jan 12, 2009, my home was burglarized as I was moving to another home. I have State Farm renters Insurance since April 08. I called Police, and I called My agent, Mr Lewis in Streator Illinois. I did everything they asked, made a list of everything that had been taken, supplied copies of Police report etc. 2 days after reporting the claim, I got a visit from the Adjustor, Mr. Chip Wilmont. He came to the house and I had to give a recorded statement and also had to sign a release for State Farm to obtain my credit report.

I was made to feel like the criminal during this "interrogation". I was asked if I was late with my rent, how much money I made ( I am on SS Disability and do side job during the summer months for extra income), I was questioned as to what my car payments are, if my husband ( we are separated) is up to date with his bills etc, is his mortgage current, are all his bills current. This adjustor was 'being nice' looking back now, I should have hired a lawyer before I spoke to this guy who has turned out to be a total JERK! I have called my agent several times to no avail, according to Mr. Lewis of State Farm In Streator Illinois, it is out of his hands. I told him that I felt totally screwed around by State FArm and He is my agent, he should stand up and help me with this claim.

Mr. Chip Wilmont has spoken to me several times, the last call became very heated. He basically came out and told me that I had to prove all recepits for all items "supposedly stolen" and that he doubted that on my income I could have all these 'high end' items. I pointed out to him that he did see a 50 inch Flat screen TV in my living room when he came over, and I have a nice home , since I am disabled I spend alot of time at home and thus do spend the money when I can..I have many credit cards and of course he pulled my credit, I am not behind on my car payment or credit cards, I have no criminal record, and I have not made any purchases on any credit card for a long time..

I don't beleive in getting stuff on credit!!! I pay cash. I became upset and told him that those items were all purchased CASH and no one saves receipts for months or years !!!He basically insinuated that my claim was a fake, but didnt come right out and say he was going to deny it. Instead he kept insisiting I had to prove ownership of every single DVD movies , some of my kids tools, his playstation, some games, my camera ( that was a gift from my other son) etc. He demanded that I call the places that I bought these items from and they had to have it in their computer..well they dont!!!!

I spend 3 hrs on the phone and since the items are purchased cash, I do not buy extended warranties and therefore DO NOT GIVE MY PERSONAL INFO to any clerk , so they can not track these purchases. Also some things were purchased thru an internet classifieds, or at Yard sales & walmart, etc. Who gets and keeps receipts for every single thing???? And who can show receipts for every single item in their home after 1 or 2 yrs?????

I called my agent again to express my anger at this situation and also to complain about the 'insinuations " by Mr Wilmont against me and my character, and was brushed off, he couldnt help me.

Last time I spoke with Mr Chip Wilmont was last week, he was going to call the store himself , to help me..yeah right, and would get back to me...havent heard a word from him....

This is a minor claim, after my deductible , i think it adds to about 2500.00, and this is the treatment and the accusations State Farm is giving their insured!!!!
I was told to file a complaint with the Insurance Commissinor and also to talk to a lawyer...I am already being screwed by State Farm, and the thief or thieves, now I have to pay an attorney to get MY INSURANCE company to pay a claim????

RIDICULOUS!!! Stay away , pay more with any other compnay but never do business with State Farm!!!

STAY AWAY FROM STATE FARM, LIKE A GOODNEIGHBOR, MY BUTT !!! They sure as heck will sell you a policy and take that money every month but dont expect service or any claim to be paid,...AVOID STATE FARM!!! GO to any other company!!!!!!!!

Who keeps receipts? I DO

AUTHOR: Nancy - Steilacoom (U.S.A.)

I keep everything. I take pictures of all my stuff and record the serial numbers AND I keep the user manuals. The insurance company will sometimes accept that as proof of ownership. I think the adjuster was acting that way because you have not had your insurance very long. SOME dishonset people get insurance and then have a "robbery" a few months later. The scammers make it hard for everyone. He asked you all thsoe questions to see if you were having any financial problems and trying to fake things to get money. NOW I have a question for YOU. IF youa re indeed disable, and getting SSD, then how are you able to work in the summer? Is your disability seasonal? I'll bet you don't report your income either.

Response to the Receipt Holder

AUTHOR: Diane - Minot (U.S.A.)

Nancy...

Was that accusation even necessary? You obviously have no idea how disability works or you wouldn't have accused this person of working "under the table". Broaden your education before you try to sound intellegent. Disability has as many variants as each human being has body parts and organs. So yes, it could be seasonal. And along with being disabled come tax breaks and tax free incomes.

Insurance companies can be harsh. However, they are still a company that provides a service for customers. I doubt the adjustor had the right to all that personal information. And then to insult this man as well.

It looks like the victim was being victimized.

I say sue the insurance company, then change companies.

Bad practice

AUTHOR: hear - Gahanna (United States of America)

Sorry, if you pay for any item $250 or more in cash, keep a receipt.  It is silly not to do so, not just for insurance, but also in case of warranty of the items or for repairs from the place you purchased them.  To not keep a receipt on a 50 inch tv paid in cash is asking for trouble.

Well Nancy, to answer yr question or accusation, I AM DISABLED and get a SS check which would not support me and my son. There fore under SS guidelines a person can still work and make up to a certain amount per month and not lose their benefits.  I DO NOT work FT as my condition does not let me work that type of schedule, but to make ends meet, I do some PT seasonal work during the summer. So before you post an accusation, please find out what you are talking about!!!

ALSO for your info my income is NOT TAXABLE since it is such a small amount even combined with SS income!!!! And the adjustor, treated  me like a criminal and I ANSWERED all his questions!!! Looking back i should have told him to leave my home and I should have hired a lawyer!!  Since according to this adjustor, the police didnt do their job good enough either!!!   He checked me out  and my rent was paid up and all my bills were paid up to date!!! so apparently my crappy claim which amounted to under $1500. WOULD NOT HAVE RESCUED ME OR SET ME UP FOR LIFE!!! IT ISNT LIKE WINNING THE LOTTERY!!!

And I stand by my original post, I will NEVER do business with STATE FARM again. My only mistake was not keeping receipts for years and years. And even then I doubt it would have satisfied this man.
