I recently noticed three separate charges on my bank statement for Friendfinders. I had never heard of them and called the number that showed up in the details of the charge. That's their billing number. They insisted that in order to remove me from their list that I would need to provide my credit card info. I refused and they hung up on me. My bank is currently investigating these charges as fraudulent. I described this activity to a friend who said she had also had to dispute a charge from the same company. They somehow get credit card info and charge people apparently. I live alone and haven't given my card info to anyone so it's highly unlikely that someone signed me up for this "service". The charges are all under $30 but appear randomly. My assumption is that they keep the charges relatively small so that people won't notice the activity.

The website is legitimate...

A bit shady and they practice questionable advertising tactics, but they have been around for quite some time and are a legitimate enterprise.

It sounds like someone got your credit card number from some other source and used it to pay for their membership.

Your doing the right thing... disputing the charges with your bank. You may also want to check the past few months for other questionable charges. I would also recommend reporting the number stolen so you can get a new number issued.
