I have been using charter digital cable and internet for quite some time now. I upgraded my account with them to start getting their 3M internet service. I upgraded from 300k to 3000k in other words.

The service was fine for the first month or two, but now the speeds are very inconsistent. My internet speeds avg in the 1000k area with a lot of time spend in the 500k area. This is less than 1/3 of what I am paying for and when I contact them about this they can do nothing. If they send a tech out my internet always seems to be working just great.

They explain that it may be due to traffic and that they can't do anything about that. Traffic shouldn't drop my internet down to 1/3 of the speed. I talked to the billing department the other night and he asked if I wanted a tech to come out. I explain I was tired of wasting half of my days off to wait for a tech to come tell me nothing and usually be rude while doing it.

The gentleman then got smart with me and asked what they could do if I wont allow a tech to come out. I eventually scheduled a time for yet another tech visit. The man then said if the tech can't help maybe I should upgrade to their new 5M service and if not then maybe I should look for a new service. You can't supply me with 3M how in the world can you give me 5M.

Anyways I think they can't handle the amount of customers in this area so if you have a phone line I suggest going DSL for now. They are too busy setting up their phone service to care about the quality of their other services.

SHARED BROADBAND

AUTHOR: Ripped-off Vacationer - Bell City (U.S.A.)

The consumer made a statement that they upgrade from 300k to 3000k which for one i cant see him having 300k since dsl has the lowest speed 768k. Although they are still both faster than dial-up where he is running into confusion is that cable internet is considered shared broadband. What this means is when the company offers a certain speed in that area, that is the speed that everyone in that area will use from. The more people who log in the slow your speed will be. Also if you are running a speed test make sure you are test from a server nearest to your location. If you try some far away server you will get lots a lateceny as well as inaccurate results. I myself am a dsl user, but not all customers have dsl in their area. So i would recommend that 1) make sure your computer is up to date and that it has been defragged within the last month (this really can slow a system down) 2)make the upgrade to the 5m and see if you can tell the difference, if not you can always switch back down...but just remember with shared broadband you WILL NOT get the speed you are quoted
