*Consumer Comment: Calling In

I just hung up the phone from an attempt to order internet service from Comcast. I don't know yet if my attempt was successful. I'll have to wait to see what their next tactic is.
My call went like this:
Me: I want to use the internet service offer you have listed online for $29.00 for six months.
Comcast: That offer is only for people who have another Comcast service.
Me: It doesn't specify that on the internet.
Comcast: Let me look. (long delay). What I can offer you is a slightly slower service instead for $40/month.
Me: No. I can keep what I have for that price.
Comcast: Let me talk to our sales office.
Me: On hold for a long time.
Comcast: I'm talking to a couple of people about this. Can I call you back in a few minutes?
Me: Yes
Comcast after calling me back: I confirmed that you're right - the internet doesn't place any restrictions on that offer. ('m sure she knew this already!) I talked to our sales office and we can offer you that deal, but since you haven't had service with Comcast for a long time, we have to have an installer come out. I set up a service date and they'll need $50 for installation, plus the first month's service at that time.
Me: $50 installation? According to the internet, installation is $33.
Comcast: I'll look into that and correct it before the installer comes out.
I hate that I'm calling Comcast for service. I dreaded calling them, but there aren't a lot of choices if I want broadband service. I know I'm not the first person to call asking about the internet offer and the phone people are trained to try to use bait & switch tactics and to keep us on hold for a long time to try to wear us down. I strongly suspect the installer will show up with a much higher bill next week.
I strongly suspect the installer will show up with a much higher bill next week. If so, I'll turn him away and won't let him install anything.

I'm sorry, friend, but if you were to go to the website, while it does show potential offers, once you enter your address and go into the promotions, there is a "terms and limitations" link on each and every offer, and the one that you specify does clearly state "for exsisting Comcast Cable or digital Voice customers only".

When you call in to place an order, with comcast or anybody else, you much consider the fact that you are calling a call center. This call center may or may not be a comcast specific call center. Just about all companies out source their work.
These call centers have "up to date" information, but may not be 100% clear on the details. Sometimes the customer service person you talk too may need to look on the website, or speak to a lead, in order to find out more details.
Something else for you to consider, is if you can find a field rep when dealing with comcast, they take a more personal active roll in signing up your cable services, they are also independent contractors and have to deal with comcasts crap but it saves you from having to do it, and often they have better deals and cheaper install rates.
