You state "20 days we were unable to work...due to excessive rain". Yet you were 90 days or 3 months late, on your vehicle payment. Doesn't add up. All the rest of the info I can understand.

Boy, did we have alot of rain!!
I go by Barrett Motors during the week on the way home from work. The cars I see out front are not what you would call 'desireable.' Pretty soon I am going to be looking for a car for my son. To know now that they won't even listen when hard times happen well that's enough for me. Thanks for the info.

To the person that responded that the original report filer must have been 90 days or 3 months past due, that may not be true.
Many "home finance" dealerships take payments weekly. 3 payments behind would then be 3 weeks or 21 days behind, which fits appropriately into the story.

You signed a contract with them to borrow their money and pay them back on a schedule. It is not their problem that it rained and you couldn't work. You have a legal binding contract. It's not like you borrowed $10 from a friend. How is this a rip off?
And by the way, if it was a "measly" $600 and you were able to walk to the dealer and pay it the next day, WHY DIDN'T YOU PAY IT IN THE FIRST PLACE

$200 per week? I don't think so. That would be at least an $800 a month car payment.

$200 a week may not be that far fetched.
The first car I ever bought was at one of these self finance places, I paid $150 a week for a used car, because they did no credit check, and I had the option of returning the car with a 30 notice.
Yeah, I was young and stupid, and would never make such a deal again, but I know for a fact that they had cars on the lot that were upwards to $200.00/week.
So it actually is possible.
Anyways, my point in the matter was not defending one side or the other. It was just a comment.

I'm not quite sure how to respond to these accusations. Having only a first name listed does not enable me to investigate this particular account. However, I will say this in defense of Barrett Motors. BMI has been in business now for over 25 years. Our primary business is that of financing vehicles for people who have had credit problems in the past. That financing is the main source of our revenue. It is in the best interest of our company to keep accounts on the books and paying. To have to repossess a vehicle is a last resort and is of no benefit to anyone (including the company). In those instances a customer is lost as well as a financial loss incurred in that the vehicle has to be sold in the wholesale market and the remaining balance written off or paid by the consumer to maintain their credit worthiness (which rarely happens in this industry).
I'm not sure why it was that the only communication from the customer was through voice mail as our collections department is in the office six days a week to receive calls and to help customers to keep their accounts current.
It is true that we offer financing on repairs for our customers after the sale. This is a service we provide to our customers for the period of time that their loan is with us after their warranty expires (provided free of charge). It is also interest free and completely optional.
All of our vehicles are Carfax certified and serviced before sold. So I am not sure what the issue here is with the quality.......something I take very serious as I personally do all of the purchasing.
Further, there is no, nor has there ever been, a "Ms. Farley" or a "David Barrett", that worked for our company.
Being a dealer who finances people with credit issues lends itself to having a certain number of repossessions. I wish it weren't necessary, but it is. The people in whom have this happen will almost never have anything good to say about the dealer or financial institute that had to do it.
As far as I can recall, I have never been called a "scam artist" or "unscrupulous" by anyone other than people who's accounts ended in repossession.
Fighting the steroetype of being a "used car dealer" is something I have had to fight all of my life being a second generation dealer. I take our reputation very serious and I believe a search of the Better Business Bureau or a call to the Rowlett Chamber of Commerce or even taking the time to contact the Dallas County Auto Dealers Assoc. (in which I served on the Board of Directors for several years) will show that our reputation is as good as anyone in the business.
I hate that your account ended in a repossession....really. It means the end of what could have been a long term customer, which is what makes any business successful.

First off...I don't consider myself to be a victim of this company. With that said, continue to read.
Last year my family had some unexpected custody issues with my 9 year old daughter who has lived with me since birth. We needed to hire an attorney to handle the claims that my out of state ex was making and needless to say money got tight pretty fast.
I contacted David Phillips and Dee Martinez at Barrett before we got behind on our payments, after explaining the situation to them over the phone I asked if it would be possible to defer the next months payment to the end of the loan (so I would not have to make up back payments ) and not only did David agree to the request he deferred 2 months even though I had only asked for one month. I have been a Barrett customer for many years and I have never heard of the 2 people that you claimed to have talked to.
Barrett's quality of vehicles is impressive to say the least...I have 2 vehicle that I purchased from Barrett #1 2003 Chevrolet Suburban that I have had for 4 years now, it has 155,544 mile and I have NEVER had a problem with, the only thing I have done is put tires on it. #2 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche (Mr. Barrett had been personally driving this truck for quite some time when I bought it) I have put 16,397 miles on it since I bought in December 2008
and have had some minor issues that can be expected of a vehicle with this many miles, no complaints though. The Avalanche had 104K on when I bought it and was well aware that I was not buying a brand new vehicle.
Barrett Motors Service Department...if there is a problem with Barrett it's in there service department. The driver seat was torn when I bought it and my salesman (Mike Barrett) said that they would fix it for me as well as the chipped windshield. For the Christmas holidays my family and I went to Indiana and we left the Avalanche at Barrett so they could fix the seat and the windshield. A week later we came back and picked the Avalanche...they had the seat "patched" and they made it look worse, I took the truck to Huffines Chevrolet in Lewisville and paid to have the driver seat cover replaced. The windshield was not fixed. Jason Barrett told me to call him and set up a time to repair the windshield...after going back and forth on the dates several times I just paid out of pocket and had it done myself.
A week or so later I noticed that the rear axle was leaking oil (I am not complaining...this can be expected of a high mileage vehicle) I contacted the service department about the issue and was going to pay out of pocket for this, I was told that I would need to leave it there for about a week to repair. Once again...I made a appointment at Huffines Chevrolet on a Friday morning and they had the job done within 2 hours.
Barrett motors does sell quality USED vehicles, I would advise anyone with credit issues to check them out...they report to the credit agencies and have 3 year loans instead of the 5-7 years loans that are common now. Keep in mind...if you expect a new car and a new car warranty you should buy a NEW car from a NEW car dealer. Barrett motors is a quality used car dealer with fair deals, they do not have the typical used car dealer atmosphere! as a long time customer I can vouch for that.
There service department....well that is one area that needs improvement...and lots of it.

It is true that our Service Department recently has had some issues. With the addition of our third location in Sachse and our recent expansion of our Service Facility, we have had to overcome some personnel shortages and some growing pains. We are working on those and as of late have hired more technicians to help facilitate those problems. We also have recently been certified by the State to perform State Inspections. I'm sorry your issue was not handled in a way that was satisfactory to you. I take our customers choice in doing business with our company very serious. I hope that in the future you will allow us another opportunity to handle your service needs. Joe, contact me at the main office the next time you are around and the next oil change is on me. I want to make it up to you.

One more thought...Even though my credit has improved enough to easily purchase a brand new truck I still chose buy another truck from Barrett.
Steve, I hope you didn't think that I was bashing your company....Its was more like a suggestion for the service department. As a business owner myself I strive to keep happy customers myself and I appreciate your hard work and dedication. There are not many independent car dealers that have been around as long as you have...that should speak for itself. Keep up the good work.

I'm really sorry you encountered this with Barrett. It's been a pleasure working with Ronnie and Donnie. We've bought 2 vehicles from them and have been extremely pleased and they worked with us when my husband had major abdominal surgery and was off work 13 weeks instead of the 2-3 we expected. I spoke several times a week direct to the finance department and they helped us hang in until we got caught up. We purchased from them because they're definitely one of the best used car lots in the metroplex, offer a good product to us with less than stellar credit, and stand behind their product--we bought a van and in 2 weeks the engine literally blew, they picked it up, overhauled the engine and it never cost us 1 penny because it was within their 90 day policy--however, after the 90 days, any major repairs can be financed in if we choose. We purchased by word-of-mouth by friends that have been dealing with Barrett since the early 90's. We've sent 4 friends and our son out to buy from them and will purchase another vehicle within the year.
