I purchased granite countertops from Rock Tops, Inc. a Michigan based company with a sales location in Lenexa, KS. This was supposedly an established company with several locations and my wife and I felt comfortable with the price and quality of the work promised by sales manager John Baird. I made a substantial deposit of $1,373.50 for the granite and was told to remove our current kitchen counter tops and sink and call back when I was ready for them to come measure.
When I did this and called the store I got no answer. Each time I called I was directed to a voice mail box that was "full". When I went to the Lenexa location during business hours there was nobody anywhere to be found and a note on the door that read "closed for the day". I returned to the store several times only to find the same note. Now all phone lines are no longer in service. I have had no response/communication with the company whatsoever since they took my money.
One of the times I was at the Rock Tops Lenexa KS store I decided to stop at another company and get an estimate on some tile. The owner told me that one of his reps mentioned that Rock Tops went out of business a couple of days earlier and they had to reposes all of their saws. I was never notified and never received my counter tops, a refund, or even a courtesy call telling me they were bankrupt. I began researching this and found out that Rock Tops closed it's doors on December 19, 2008. I'm sure they knew they were going out of business when they sold me $2,746.50 worth of product on December 14, 2008 just 5 days before they closed up shop and skipped town. There is no way they would have gotten my granite installed (or even measured for that matter) by December 19th.
The crooked owners of this company obviously planned to take as much money from consumers as possible (right up to the point of closing) when they knew full well that they would never hold up their end of the deal. Everything I have found leads me to believe that these guys intentionally scammed consumers and skipped town with all of our money.
The owners of Rock Tops Inc. should be held legally responsible for what they have done and I hope they end up behind bars. The senior management of Rock Tops, Inc. are nothing more than common criminals. They took advantage of everyone from consumers, to their own employees and suppliers.
Having our kitchen torn up and nearly $1,400.00 of our budget on hold has caused our kitchen remodel to take forever because of this granite setback. We were fortunate to have some recourse through my credit card company to dispute the charges, but I know there are many people out there that probably got screwed worse than I did and I wish them luck in getting their hard earned money back from Rock Tops.

I have also contacted the Kansas Attorney General to make sure Rocktops, Inc. will be investigated thoroughly regarding their ethics and legal conduct before going out of business.
