SpringMasters Canada Unsafe, exploitative and untruthful Ottawa Ontario

First pf all i would like to state that i did actually enjoy working for this company. But due to there questionable ethics and blatant disregard for employee saftey i left in disgust.

Started work there as a core aeration specialist because i was desperate for a job, i made between 90-150 a day, which seemed low to me but it was better then nothing.
The reason i am complaining however is due to their unsafe driving and dangerous materials handling.

First of all the managers in charge of each team are denied the proper amount of sleep often just 3-4 hours a night before driving a E350 van packed with often an unsafe number of employees, often with no enforcement of seat belt wearing and sometimes they would take out the middle bench and we would have 5 people just sitting on the floor. The managers engaged in dangerous driving, once i heard a manager brag about how many red lights he had run in a day. They would also race each other down residential streets easily going 40km over the posted speed limit, i myself was involved in a accident because the driver fell asleep at the wheel. he soon left the company. All this while towing a 20ft trailer loaded with easily 5000 pounds of equipment.

This was very disconcerting but i needed to make money so i continued working for the company until the driveway sealing season started. Not only did we often charge double what other companies charge for the same service, but if we sold a driveway but the person could not have it sealed that day or wanted to call the company to book a sealing, we were not paid one cent. We used driveway crack filler from Canadian Tire, which is worth 6$ a bottle and told to charged people 10$ to fill up big cracks, the focus of this company is clearly not on a good product and service but simply trying to get as much done as quickly as possible.

The most dangerous thing however was that we were using a Asphalt/tar substance as a sealant, this is a dangerous good and is highly volatile and dangerous, yet we had a 4 horsepower Honda engine not 2 feet from a reservoir of this stuff. We were told that we would receive proper training and a dangerous goods license, but after i received my license (with about 10 minutes of training that mentioned nothing about the dangers of the product) i looked on the back and it said that we were responsible for our own training. But the worst part is the blatant disregard for laws regarding the transportation of this stuff. I never once saw a Material Safety Data Sheet (which as anyone knows who has worked with chemicals before is required) and when i asked to see one i was shown one for Gasoline, which means if there was ever a fire involving the substance, and the fire department showed up, i would not be able to tell them what it was ( all we were told was that it was something called Blacmac) and the proper disposal and fire fighting procedures. Ive worked around chemicals such as chlorine and bromine for most of my working life, and this disregard for laws that are clearly there to keep employees safe actually scared me.
And finally to top all this off, we were informed that we would be given bonuses if we were the top performing team of driveway sealers, what they don't tell you, is that money is from the "equipment rental fee" ( 10$) they charge every employee every day, so your basically paying 10$ to what ever team is the best in sales.

And a final note to Mr Ben Stewart the CEO
your lucky i did not call the workplace safety and insurance board regarding these violations, or the transportation board regarding your condoning of the violation of traffic laws by your employees. It would put too many people out of work, but if there is ever an incident, i would testify for free against you and your company. These kids and adults work their asses off for you, and you cant even give them safe working conditions.

All these claims of violations of laws and standards have been researched by me, and although there are other questionable practices that your company is responsible for, i kept this report to the illegal actions.
