This so called PREPAID LEGAL is no such thing ! The only thing pre paid is their bank account. They tell you for your monthly premium you get FREE consultations with an attorney then if you need a referral attorney he will give you a 25% discount off his fee. Well his fee is at least DOUBLE what other attorneys are. There referral attorneys don't always want to take your case and youre stuck.

We signed up with Pre Paid Legal for one year. Don't let the name fool you. The only thing pre paid is there bank account. We had a legal problem we were given a provider law firm. We then told them the problem, they in turn gave us a referral attorney.

The referral attorney called us and told us she couldn't help us,because we would probably need an out of state attorney AND ou best bet would be to call our local TV station and speak to the troubleshooter and get the media involved. Well I called the provider law firm back and told them what happened they said they would get me a 2nd referral. I also complained to customer service. We had a deadline for a conference call and needed an attorney we didnt have time for this crap.

We the received a name and phone number and name of another attorney. I call this guy, make an appt. I call back next day to reschedule do to work hours. I then tried for 3 days to get hold of this attorney. I left VMs. He would not call back. I call provider law firm and tell them. Lost attorney finally calls us.

Doesn't apologize. We go see him. He actually ROLLED his eyes at us when he sees us in his waiting room.My husband was ready to, well you know. So this guy starts giving us prices that are double of what other attorneys charge and we are supposed to get 25% discount. He then tells us we will lose anyway. We had already checked 6 different attorneys in the same area (fees) he was trying to get rid of us,scares us off with his prices. On one issue he quoted he charged $145.00 an hour. There would be 2 hours of reading material and a 15 minute conference call.

He quoted us $750.00. That does not sound like a 25% discount or $145.00 an hour. All the man talked about was retainers, not the issues, we were supposed to get FREE consultations. He even wanted $3500 retainer on a medical malpractice. The other attorneys I spoke with would do this on a % basis. The PRE PAID LEGAL is a BIG RIP OFF. Now we are stuck paying $26.00 a month for a year.

You won't always like the answer.

AUTHOR: Aaron - Bremerton (U.S.A.)

As usual, little information on the situation, just complaining about the service. Yet, from the way your write it, you make is sound as if you already had a major time-sensitive issue when you started the service or you let an issue become major and time-sensitive by not reacting to it sooner. It's interesting that this might require an attorney in a different state. Just as interesting is the idea that the media might be able to help solve your problem. I'd certainly like to hear more details on the situation.

As to the service: You certainly got your free consultation, the fact that you don't like what you hear doesn't make it invalid. Nothing in the plan guarantees that you'll like the information you receive, simply that it will be expert advice pertaining to the law. Sometimes the law is not on your side. You also received your 25% discount, as I'll explain below, the fact that it's more than you'd like just shows you the value attached to legal services. After all, if attorneys could be hired for $25 dollars an hour there'd be no need for this service. Finally, your attorney advised you that you'd probably lose, this may be true. He also told you up front what he was charging you and what he'd do (pretty honest for a lawyer). Truth be told, few people want to work in a no-win situation. Besides, if you lose you're going to be out your money. On the other attorneys, I don't know what they told you but I'd like to know if they are rated and remind you that ambulance chasers exist everywhere and serve only to rip you off in the name of helping you.

On you concern of prices: I checked with your provider firm in Oklahoma (Riggs, Abney, Neal, Turpen, Orbison and Lewis) and their standard fee is $225 an hour. I don't who you were referred to but $145 an hour is easily a 25% discount off what you would normally pay your provider firm. My own provider firm in Washington (Lombino Martino) normally charges $185 an hour but only $115 an hour for PPL members. The American Bar Association states that the average attorney charges $205 an hour. Some will charge more than this others less. Remember, the discount applies to THEIR normal charges, not what you think they should be charging. The Oklahoma Bar Association notes that state laws require attorney fees to be competative based of the SIZE and QUALITY of attorney. Prepaid Legal works only with rated attorneys most being AV rated. You have to decide whether you want a $1000 Armani suit or a $50 knock off from Wal-Mart. When it comes to clothes I go with Wal-Mart, when it comes to my rights I select Armani. You may hold a different standard for yourself, I don't know. Additionally, the Oklahoma Bar Association also states that one should be weary when dealing with attorney's who work solely on a contingency basis. Many add clauses that cause you pay a much larger percentage if you win than you would paying hourly and should you lose you would still have to pay for their expenses (to include their salary).

I'm sorry you're not satisfied with your service but I certainly don't discourage you from making use of it in the future. If nothing else, update your will before your year is up. Good luck in the future.

#2 Consumer Suggestion

If you are not happy with the service you can cancel at any time

AUTHOR: Sarge7us - Metropolis (U.S.A.)

I understand your frustration with this situation and I can only tell you that you do not have to keep the service for an entire year. Nothing in the membership application says it's a year contract. All you need to do is send PPL a written request to cancel your membership. When you mail it be sure to use delivery and signature confirmation so that you have proof your letter was received.
