 Warning for RVers to beware of any membership offers made by Western Horizon Resorts. The offers are false, and the membership service is even worse! 

In February 2008, we were in the Cottonwood/Sedona area of Arizona in our RV, parked outside of WalMart on Rodeo Drive in Cottonwood for about a week. One morning a woman who said she was an employee of nearby Camp Verde Western Horizon Resorts, handed a flyer to us. It was an invitation, offering free camping and a free meal for two if we would listen to a 90-minute sales presentation. We thought about it, and decided we had nothing to lose, so two days later we drove our RV to the Camp Verde resort.

We were given three days of free camping hookups, utilities and clubhouse use. We were not given a coupon voucher for the free meal for two, but never pressed for it after we learned that meals were generally cold-cuts, wieners, or breaded fish sticks, and served only on weekdays. We were also surprised to learn members had to pay for these simple meals and they were required to take their own forks, plates, and glasses to the clubhouse as Western Horizon was too cheap to furnish disposable plastic!

On the morning of the third day, we went into the clubhouse for the sales presentation. The salesman told us he did not believe in high pressured sales tactics, then he immediately began a high pressured sales pitch. We almost walked out several times, but he reeled us back in with promises to satisfy our growing concerns.

My friend was in posession of the RV we were staying in. He was temporarily staying in Arizona, trying to find a job. He could not afford to buy a membership. We thought the offer from Western Horizon was good, at the time, for people who stayed in their RVs fulltime and would remain in WH territory. But, we knew we would not stay on Arizona if my friend could not find a job. The salesman told us that would not be a problem, that we could discontinue membership at any time and we would be offered a buyout. We wanted discounted monthly rates, as well. He told us we would receive special monthly rates. He also told us we would not have to pay anything at any Western Horizon Resort, and minimal out-of-pocket to any of their affiliates. Thinking my friend would got his money's worth out of this deal, I wrote a large down payment as a loan to my friend. The salesman told my friend to go to the clubhouse the next morning and he would take him fishing at the fish pond, located on the resort. My friend went to the clubhouse the next morning, and the salesman acted like he didn't even know who he was, so he immediately returned to the RV.

We were given three more weeks of free camping sice we signed a contract. Two weeks later, my friend could not find a job so we decided to leave Arizona. We were not around any Western Horizon Resorts or their affiliates when we went to eastern Oklahoma. A month later, we parted company. I stayed in Oklahoma and my friend took his RV to Texas. He tried to find an RV space in North Texas, and found a WH affiliate through The Condominimum Club. They said they had never heard of WH. he called me, and I found out --after calling several numbers -- that he had to reserve a place through the Western Horizon Resorts 800 number to receive the discount. But, we were told by WH that it we would only receive the nghtly rate, and not the monthly rate as we were promised by the salesman.

It was hard to get a spot because the nightly spots were generally reserved. My friend could also not stay a full week, as weekend rates were much higher, and did not offer the $2 discount. Getting a weekend reservation was even harder. He ended up having to stay at a state park most of the time.

We saw it would not work so I called Western Horizon Resorts in Gunnison, CO, for a buyout. I was told I would have to talk to the Camp Verde office where I signed the contract. i called there and was told I had to call Gunnison. I finally began to question this 'buyout" promise. I was told they would have to review my membership, then they would call me back. But they never called. I was having to pay $379. yearly for Maintenance Charges, $102.96 per month for two years, and am now being billed $2000. additional for new sites under construction! 

Finally, in September 2008 I called WH and told them I was not paying anymore. Especially since I did not even own the RV, and had continally asked them to get me out of this contract, as promised. Then, I stopped paying.

In November 2008 I emailed the salesman at Camp Verde for information on who to contact to resolve these matters. I never heard from him or from anyone else.

In March 2009 I received a letter from the billing manager at WH in Gunnison, Colorado. I called her, and proceeded to be yelled at bacause I would not let her dominate the conversation. I will never call WH again.

In April 2009 I wrote a certified letter to the CEO, James Lokin, in Gunnison. He had his billing manager write back -- not with resolutions, just wanting more money!

I recently received another letter from the billing manager threatening to turn me over to the collection agency. I will not pay another dime for service I did not receive, and for broken promises. I am writing reports to the District Attorneys in Cottonwood, AZ, and Gunnison, CO, and will try to find a Consumer's Advocate program or a lawyer who will help me with this case.
